Welcome to the first program of 2016, which finds us doing something predictable, playing a Coil record, and doing something else predictable, which is sounding awesome. OF COURSE bad things happen on this program, and AS USUAL it doesn't matter. This one goes in the vault. (They all go in the vault, but some postings merit the announcement more than others.)
As the history apparently goes, "Backwards" was something that Coil began to record either with Trent Reznor of at Trent Reznor's studio. I am too lazy to google at the moment. But here, from my youTube "favorites" list, is something funny Peter Christopherson said about Nine Inch Nails:
You know what, though? I'm going to tell you something that would probably have sickened Younger Me, so it's a good thing that guy can't use a time machine to see this: I have actually come to believe in recent years that Trent Reznor is a lovely guy, or at least that he has become one. Old age is making me really soft.
Miscellaneous: the same person who called in to request Can chided me a few minutes later for playing Motorhead and not Hawkwind. People are tough to please.

It's funny, once again, how the inexplicable and intolerable time lag between a show's airing and its posting creates awkwardness. I thought, at the time, that I was opening the show with "merely" the new David Bowie single, and not the opening paragraph of a goodbye note. I miss 2015. Anyway, the "tribute" show comes later; this is just the regular regular.
But what a good program this is, if I do say so, and I do. I somehow managed not to get to as much of Volume Four as I would have liked, but I am gratified to see from the images on Discogs that it is indeed "World's End Limited" that produced this fine series of compilation zines, for a while. And if it wasn't the name of the label, someone needs to take this up, stat. The world's end is coming, after all.

What Kind of Dance Is This, Nothing Happens: Transmission 255, 2015 December 29
Tuesday Jan 19, 2016
Tuesday Jan 19, 2016
This seemed like a "downer" of a program when I listened back to it, but looking at the playlist I can't see why, except for the obvious. More on that momentarily. It probably had something to do with my mood, which proves as always that I am not fit to assess anything. My counselor tells me that we need to do some deep, background work but that my self-esteem is so wrecked that such work will probably make me feel worse about myself instead of better. So--how is your 2016?
Anyway, this is the first of a couple of Comsat Angels-themed episodes, which maybe explains the melancholy atmosphere of this particular audio file. It's weird--these records are so good and yet they just didn't make it into my circle of whatever, back in the day. I'm sure my old radio station had some stuff, but I don't remember anyone playing it; I had no friends who were into this band, never saw their records in a local store, etc. This seems like one of the quaint little things about pre-globalization. I remember having a copy of Surfer Rosa early on, loaning it to someone, having that person loan it to someone else, having an insanely hard time tracking my record down, and not getting it back until nearly a year later, by which point seemingly everyone I knew was a Pixies fan. For many an influential record, the roles were reversed--I depend on others and am by no means a tastemaker, no matter what my twitter bio says--but I can't for the life of me understand why Comsat Angels bypassed all of us. Clearly, though, it's never too late to be an emo kid.

Last June, when "The Dark Parade" ended, we moved our broadcast time from Tuesdays to Wednesdays. I have a thing about calendars, dates, and observances--part of me wanted not to appear on the same dates I broadcast last year ("that rules out a lot of dates," murmurs the chorus) but a hump night return was more important. So, anyway, here we are again with another Festivus observance. Last year's was so cheerful, in comparison, but this is a well-put-together program that I hope will give someone comfort at some point, maybe even right now.
It is good to see the back of this week. I am sick, both medically and at heart. It seems like everyone is dying. We're also being jobbed out of a proper winter, and my reverse seasonal affect isn't having it. I am grateful in these times for friends (update--"Reinhardt" and I made brief contact), friendly acquaintances (thanks to Leslie W for the copy of "1") and fleeting respites from my chronic, overstated anguish.

Accidental Christmas Tunes To Come: Transmission 253, 2015 December 22
Friday Jan 08, 2016
Friday Jan 08, 2016
I have nothing to say about this particular program--except that maybe I expected a bit more from a tune called "We Met Bernard Sumner at a Christmas Party Last Night," that one has a bit of a "We Didn't Start the Fire" thing going* --so I will just drop a couple of thoughts here, or maybe "musings," if they don't rise to the level of thoughts.
I never owned any iteration of The Ghosts of Christmas Past until a day or two before this program. I knew that Crepuscule had released the 73rd different edition of this collection this fall, but I opted for the original record, mostly because I preferred the cover art. I'm sure the cd is perfectly good, but I am a jerk like this a lot of the time. I need THE WHOLE PACKAGE to be just right, or I will have "issues." It got me thinking whether aesthetics and curation are just fascism for people who are squeamish about actual violence.
Also, perhaps a bit of mental clarity is beginning to kick in on account of some changes of habit, but this was the year I decided I really wasn't into Christmas music per se. Every song I heard, unless it was attributed as "traditional," struck me as a crass novelty, which they really are. I am slow enough to have realized this just now. (By the way, people really WENT IN HARD on "Wonderful Christmas Time" by Paul McCartney this year, as though it just dawned on us all that maybe it's not so good. But I will tell you that there is no universe in which that is a worse song than The Beach Boys' "Little Saint Nick.") Anyway, I have always associated certain non-observant recordings with December, or Christmas time, if you prefer. We'll get to those, but that's for next time.
"Always Christmas, and Never Winter."
*it does have a good beat, and you can dance to it.

Thursday Jan 07, 2016
There were many things going wrong behind the scenes on this particular night. Fortunately most of them don't make it to the foreground of this broadcast. But I can tell you, I was confused and frazzled as it was happening. It has been nice, listening to it after the fact and actually hearing the tunes.
Sometimes a band survives for a long time and through many iterations, but only some of their records seem to represent them as you'd like to remember them. The Wedding Present record featured in this broadcast is one of those. Also there are records that give you strong memories of hopeful times, "core memories," let's call them [yes, I just watched Inside Out, and yes, I cried]. That record is also one of those.

Can't Cry When I Don't Have Your Shoulder: Transmission 251, 2015 December 9
Tuesday Jan 05, 2016
Tuesday Jan 05, 2016
The second night of a "back-to-back"--we did several of these last month. I might have mentioned this last time out, but December is prime time for filling in on the radio. People (a) get busy and (b) go away. In the olden days it was a joy to take on extra broadcast opportunities around the annual gifting holiday. I am trying to re-access feelings these days. I don't know if it's working.
I do know that I have achieved a particular kind of notoriety, in that my behavior is more or less the cause of a new station policy limiting the frequency of fill-in appearances. One consideration for "Hall of Fame" status in sports is whether an athlete has changed the game in some way, for example causing a strategic re-think or the introduction of new rules to level the "playing field." So there is that. I definitely have Hall-of-Fame peskiness and endurance, if not quality. There is a question of whether the rule can really be about me when I helped to draft it, but we will let the judges decide.
Anyway, as it turns out, this long-winded humblebrag is a bit out of place, as December 9 was a regularly-scheduled appearance for me. Timing: it has never been my strong suit. As I predicted, this show was a bit angrier and more ragged than the previous night. But it is also full of TR-707 sounds, as promised, so no complaining.

Tuesday Jan 05, 2016
Yo yo yo, happy 2016 denizens of the podcast site. We are back, feeling heavier and not terribly refreshed from our holiday, such as it was. Here is our sesquicentennial episode, occuring--as is our tradition with milestones--without fanfare, on short notice, and in a fill-in context. I am still working on figuring out why it is so much fun do do radio when I am "not supposed to." Updates will follow.
Anyway, this was a good night. As I say during the broadcast, the Ezy & Isaac record is quite special and continues to get better in my estimation, for what it's worth. We got real-time positive feedback--hooray for affirmation!--and a request that actually fit in with what we were doing. A BANNER EVENING.
