Sardonicus Keeps Smiling Till the End: Transmission 426, 2018 October 3

My program tries to be topical when it can. In late September and early October, which seem about 50 years ago now, Americans were transfixed by the trainwreck of a nomination process for (now) Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, a belligerent drunk (possibly formerly, but no one is sure) who almost certainly at least tried to rape at least one woman. It was a sordid process leading to a predetermined outcome, and you felt (rightly) that there was nothing you could do to stop it. That reminds me of something, though I can't quite put my finger on what that is.
Because the whole thing needed just a touch of bleak humor, it emerged the week of this program that at some point (1985?) Kavanaugh and his bros had gone to a UB40 gig, presumably in New Haven. Afterward, at a bar, Kavanaugh had confronted someone he mistook for Ali Campbell; angry at being properly rebuffed, he initiated a fight. This led to a brief, unresolved national dialogue on whether this is something that all "real men" do--starting barfights, not attendinng UB40 concerts, sadly.
I've never done either, though UB40 did come through my hometown on what seems to be that same tour. I bet they would have been good, if the disc I played on this program is any evidence. And, though I seem less intrusive on this program than I have seemed recently, the disc certainly "stops the bleeding," by which I mean the run of terrible shows brought on by lapses of judgment and technique. If only I had heeded the lesson I learned here, which is to go back to the basics--can you just play one thing and not screw it up? It's a solid foundation.

Disaster should perhaps be my middle name. Were it not for the fact that "Kid Disaster Catharsis" doesn't have a ring to it, and that the legal process is expensive and needlessly complicated, as I have recently discovered, I might make this a reality. If you wonder why I am pondering this, click the "play" button on this episode to find out. To say that most of it makes little sense to me is an understatement. Perhaps if I'd listened a bit sooner after it was actually broadcast, I might understand the "mood" I was in at the time, but...whom am I kidding?
The tracks themselves are decent enough (most of them, anyway). The segues baffle me completely, and I am annoyed by THIS GUY who keeps butting in between songs. I really wish he would go away, and can't wait for the day that he does.
A strange, merciful thing happens toward the end of the program, though. My laptop loses its charge and shuts off abruptly, and I am "flying blind" like Luke at the end of the first Star Wars movie. And everything magically gets better. Maybe if you just skip to the last half-hour of the program we can agree to believe that the first 3/4 of the show never happened. Does this sound like a plan?

Slightly better this time out, I have to say! Though I fear that we'll have to endure several more episodes of the "one-song backannouncement" between tracks, I think I handle it a bit more adeptly this time. At least, it seems to me that I ruined fewer good segues. There is no helping the bad ones! It doesn't hurt that the music between the segues, at least to my ears, sounds a bit better than in recent episodes. That's not nothing.
I have to say, I've been on a bit of a kick lately with this radio thing. Could it be that my passion has been reignited by something? I have no idea what! Maybe it's just that the previous two episodes were so cringeworthy I became paralyzed for three months. It happens. But I can promise you there is some good stuff coming--uhhh, in November. Don't worry, we'll get there together. Sooner or later.

Dare To Live in Your Body: Transmission 423, 2018 September 12

Thankfully, on this outing I was not sick, though that is nearly the best thing that one can say about this program. A common problem rears its head here with uncommon frequency--a segue that sounded good at home sounds terrible, suddenly, in the moment and on air. So there's plenty of that to look forward to. Elsewhere, I ruin many a decent segue by doing a "one-song backannouncement over the crossfade.
[Sigh] I think I had decided upon this because I was growing tired of delivering long lists of discographical information and talking over the bulk of a track. But to me that is clearly better than what is on display here. My voice is not a palette-cleanser, I guess! It would also help if I avoided stupid mistakes like forgetting that the "Mr." in "Mr. Marouf" was "monsieur" and not "mister." That one particularly bugged me.
There happens to be a sublime passage in the second hour of the program, I would say, from Bromide through Oiseaux-Tempete. And the last two tracks therein prevent it from being a solid rock block! That's not nothing.
