Since I never get to, or am never allowed to, do a WRFI broadcast on Christmas Eve, I suppose I will have to make do with another Festivus program. (This may be "inside talk" of the sort with which we had an attraction / repulsion thing going during this broadcast, but whatever.) Nevertheless, this was a good outing. Lady Catharsis and I had a nice mix of "chestnuts" and tunes we had never before played, and the banter was cheery and good. In an added bonus, I resisted the temptation to share all 24 minutes of Oval with our listeners.
And there was reason for cheer--it was the second night of our "Christmas vacation." Little did I know at the time that it would be ten days of mediocre sleep and troubled dreams, most of them dreams of a previous life I am well out of. Looking back, maybe our mood on this night was "premature," or "misplaced," or whatever, but hindsight doesn't cloud the fact that this was a fun show to do, and (I hope) to hear.

Catharsis Family Values: Transmission 377, 2017 November 1

Welcome to Festival of Evidence v4.0! It has been two years since we did this--my time slot during last year's fundraiser coincided with an awful presidential debate (if that is not a redundancy)--and it is definitely worth the wait. The entire Bombast crew is here, with fundraising specialist Godfrey on "the other side of the partition," and a good time is had by all. We even managed to make some money on this night.
Notes: it still embarrasses me, two and a half weeks later, that I accidentally played Siouxsie twice. I did manage to explain "Milkshake Duck" to Godfrey but we have not gotten around to explaining "family values" or "Stranger Things" to Junior, which is probably for the best. I may have gotten my recollection of John Peel's death wrong in my tiresome anecdote. That would not surprise me at all. I don't remember who was actually on the air the night he died. I should really stop telling stories, or at least make some new ones.

Here is the penultimate broadcast of a very busy September, in which we used up our allotted memory at ye olde podcast site, and then some! Junior is my copilot on this night, though she declined to spin a record and retreated to "mere" commentary. I fear that she is growing bored with radio, and/or with me. This saddens me, not just because my daughter is growing up, but because she is a good radio person and getting better. It's about CONTENT.
DJ Midwife (aka Kristi) may or may not have been "doing good things in the world" on this night, which gave us the opportunity to synth you out here. However, I can find no confirmation of any "good things" in my email. I must have had her confused with somebody else! But surely it is a good sign that I think the best of other people.
Oh, and Hoga Nord is from Sweden, of course.

Here is one of those shows that might make you think, had you known me 30 years ago, "ah yes, he is still on his bullshit." Noisy self-released English pop! African compilations! New Order! Discussion of Burning Airlines Mail Order! Boring the hell out of my guests! It is all here, champ.
Junior, though finding many things dull here (sorry, Dan!), is giving the thumbs up to most of the content, so that's good. And I discover an increased appreciation for a Rolling Stones recording, which is also nice. I happen to agree with Junior that Muzak is not relaxing. Nor is dedicated Easy Listening--I associate it with visiting the doctor's office as a child, to get my allergy shots every single fucking week. At least the nurses were kind!
I'm also struck by how much more melodic New Order are than everything else I'm into on this night. Goodness gracious what a terrific record PCL is.

Welcome to the first of two consecutive episodes in which I find myself playing "problematic" people. First up is Michelle Shocked, whom I never "got" and certainly don't get now. But what am I to do? Junior was sitting in with me, and as part of our normal "thing," we were playing full sides of records; are the other five artists on Side 2 of Sgt. Pepper Knew My Father to be blackballed? [In all honesty I do think, pace Junior, that I'd be happy with less Courtney Pine, even though I've only played him once!]
One of my goals in doing this whole Bombast program, at least as I faintly remember it, was to see if I could give up a bit of control and open myself up to the authenticity of circumstances and other people. How is that going? I'm probably feeling a bit uncomfortable when I remark, about an hour in, that 20 minutes of Elvis Costello (a birthday observance) followed 20 minutes of the Beatles isn't exactly ON BRAND. And what, for heaven's sake, is Seeming? As I told Alex I am very impressed with his record; I hear new things in it with each listen. I'm afraid it's not exactly my cup of tea and I've never been more convinced by a record that that isn't the record's fault. So that is something!

Surprise! You probably thought you were rid of me for two weeks, but fate and jetBlue Airlines have made you their bitch. Because here I am, along with Junior, in Ithaca when we should be in California, and delivering an unfavorable substitute to a very in-favor program.
Notes: at one point in the show I use the phrase "hotel airport," of which I am sure there is one somewhere, but Syracuse is not such a place. We got an almost-free meal out of it, and that is the absolute best that can be said. We also discussed libertarian eclipse preparation, about which I seem to have been wrong, at least locally: eclipse glasses were given out freely at the local observatory, while in stock (nevertheless I missed out). I'll be damned, though, if there isn't some backwater town somewhere in the "path of totality" where you had to pay for them. I'd bet money on it, if I had money. ALSO I haven't bothered to fact-check that eclipse in '93 or '94 that I referred to, so I'm not sure whether El Paso was "in the path" or not. Waiting to sit with that embarrassment, when it comes, as it surely will. Finally, I will never understand the fascination with female voices on the radio--some listener wrote in asking Junior's age, while mine, to my knowledge, has never been a matter for speculation among our listeners. At any rate, Junior delivers the perfect answer; you will just have to listen for it.

Welcome to Installment Four of the Junior Experiment. It occurs to me that we had a short-lived feature once (I think it was literally once) which we called "Junior Selector," in which some tune that struck Junior's fancy at the moment made it to air in the same way "Listening Parlour" tunes do. IIRC it was "Kether Hot Knives" by A Certain Ratio, of all things. What taste! And where did it go?
I should not waste too much time lamenting, because on this occasion she brings in "a Stones record we both agree on" (there are only a few!). She gets nervous when I remind her that her promise that the tunes are suitable for daytime airplay will only bring us more scrutiny, but not nervous enough to opine quite candidly on the subject of "You Can't Always Get What You Want." I have changed my mind about something I said during the program. I hope that Mick and Keef ARE listening, and, gents, I hope you drop my daughter a note--she would love that.

Get Nowhere Twice As Fast: Transmission 355, 2017 July 13
Tuesday Jul 25, 2017
Tuesday Jul 25, 2017
We should get this out of the way first: on this program, which sees Junior and me continuing our "schtick" of playing entire sides, there's a wonderful set of Television Personalities covers. Admittedly, I had never really come across this band's music--except when I did. Its fingerprints are all over the early Creation Records catalog, and not just in the Times (naturally)--tell me that Biff Bang Pow! didn't spend their entire "career," as good as it was, trying to re-create "She's My Yoko." This material is not very typical of what we do here at BOMBAST, but it is simply too good. Does this mean anything?
I am more struck by the juxtaposition (or is it?) of Simon & Garfunkel and Joy Division, to be honest.
Junior has said that Simon & Garfunkel make "the only pop music that [she] can listen to without wanting to vomit," which is not only an endorsement but an attestation that The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, the other two anchors of her growing collection, are (at times) something other than pop. (She's pretty sharp.) Anyway, I come not to bury or praise Simon & Garfunkel, only to say that I genuinely don't understand them and never have. I can't inhabit these songs--except for "I Am A Rock"--and I can't fathom doing so. Imagine listening to "The 59th Street Bridge Song" and thinking, "this expresses me," or wanting this to be the case. I would run from anyone who did.
I remember this one time in catechism class when our teacher analyzed "The Sound of Silence"--supposedly as a warning against idol worship (?)--so I suppose that's something one can do. I have similar memories of U2 and Howard Jones lyrics going "under the microscope" at this or that Catholic Youth Group function. Good times!
One can be a Simon & Garfunkel person, or a Joy Division person, or neither, but certainly not both. Prove me wrong. Show me a living specimen.
Tag me as a "Joy Division person," which means--I don't really know what. I have a personal history with Closer, certainly, and like a friend it is always different when I come back to it. But I find, upon this listen, that I don't see myself in it, and I'm not sure how I ever did. These songs are too individual, too personal (maybe "The Eternal" transcends this). No doubt you've seen it referred to--callously and tritely--as Ian Curtis's suicide note (it probably isn't), but it certainly couldn't pass as anyone else's. Junior, once again, is right to find this "not that bad"--there is no reason to treat this anguish as yours. It's not.
Finally, "Pocket Love" isn't the most "dance party"-worthy tune there is, but it will have to do.

The Magic Wound: Transmission 353, 2017 July 8
Sunday Jul 23, 2017
Sunday Jul 23, 2017
The first instance having been a decent debut, Junior and I tried to do a program together again. This time we filled in for "The Magic WomB," DJ Kristi being out of town on account of her father. He is fine, by the way. On this occasion Junior brought in a record and insisted on playing an entire side of it. I have decided that this is going to be our thing.
This broadcast is full of hard truths and glimpses behind the curtain. It begins badly when I play the Fall "record" on spotify (I didn't own it yet--I swear I used to have some previous iteration of this album--how did it walk out of my collection?) but my app was set to "shuffle." If you can't handle me at my sausage-making worst, you're just not ready for me in general. We also learn that I think Junior is a better person than I am (a low bar that she had better clear) and that I have a chorus of unkind voices in my head. We should probably have saved Ian Dury for a later hour when children were less likely to be present, but Junior, at least, has heard worse. Any parent who does not play The Comet Is Coming for their child, though, should be charged with neglect.

It's a Fact that I Live With: Transmission 350, 2017 June 24
Monday Jul 17, 2017
Monday Jul 17, 2017
Did you know that I am scared of round numbers? I have a basic problem with implied symmetry in my playlists, e.g. I would rather play 29 or 31 songs in my broadcast than 30. (I have long felt this way about LPs--except for classic New Order, and all the 4AD eps from the 80s, I'm not a big fan of "the same number of tracks on each side of the record," finding the 10-song album particularly distasteful. Weird, huh.) Not too long ago, I was okay with milestones, at least--100th program, 200th program, etc. Now anything that ends in zero seems like a convenient place to call time on this adventure, or for someone else to do so.
So it was fairly cool that #350 popped up randomly as a fill-in opportunity on which Junior wanted to begin a co-hosting escapade. Not only "no meaning" but "decent co-host": I will take that. Junior had not really found her confidence or her voice, though it starts to come on near the end of this broadcast, when she begins making Gayle references. There is really not much talking on this episode; not sure what is going on with me. Maybe just chilling in the studio with a good person, and/or low-key scrambling to throw up some decent segues. Either way, good process = good results.
