Once Again we have some catching up to do. How did this month disappear? (Maybe I am wrong to assume they don't all disappear in the same way.) Whatever--we'll begin with this episode, featuring a new single by whatever Keiran Hebden is calling himself and his crew. It is quality, but also dare I say directionless and maybe even implacable (not bad things!), a nice metaphor for this little radio adventure I have going.
It has been awhile since I listened to this, so I hope you can forgive the lack of specific recollections and the haziness of those that do exist. I remember feeling that the show went well, execution-wise, though I don't think Johnny Moped quite "fit," not that they would care. I remember "Fat" reminding me (in a good way) of Trisomie 21 and thinking that I need more T21 in my life. As always, there is no money or time. I remember thinking I needed to pronounce "Oblic" as "oblique" but that this was totally instinctive and without rational basis. Am I a snob for doing this and a slightly smaller snob for admitting it? Finally, there is not knowing what a "footjob" is and knowing I don't want to go that far. I am sadly basic.

[GUEST POST]
Guy here. I did a couple of programs at the end of October. This is one. A captive of dead time might have said, "my schedule allowed me" to do a couple of programs; a poseur might have called it a "gentlemanly, cosmopolitan schedule." But I "keep it real." I do what I want, when I want. My schedule dictates not a thing.
It was nevertheless convenient that I was thrown off a middle-school bus chartered for a middle-school field trip to Quebec, on which I had tried to stow away. But these things will happen. You don't sulk. You make the best of it. I have already "been a lot of places, seen a lot of faces" anyway. It's those kids who are missing out.

It is a new month, with new energy and new freedom and new prospects. A certain Onion story is tempting me to link to it, but I still struggle with just how real I want this ongoing diary to be, in the end. At any rate, I do attach here a fine program featuring a fine record, even though the segues don't always live up to my expectations. That's okay. I AM LEARNING TO LOVE MYSELF.
I have an on-again / off-again semi-secret life as an amateur electrical engineer / hobbyist / noodler. There's a saying in those circles that within 10% of the desired value of anything is fine unless you're on the edge of a cliff. We've arrived at that point, with this episode, #270. "300" is the number of programs I would pretty much bet my life on having done at my old station; differences in program length notwithstanding that is the point at which it will start feeling as though this program, here, is the Real one. THERE IS NO NEED TO FEEL THIS WAY but I do nevertheless, and it is daunting. I am already comfortable saying this is the better one although it lacks the naivete and pure instinct that drove the old one. Still, it is my light and it produces happiness, I will not hide it, it will not always be my only light and it will not be a light of mine forever. But it is here, now, and I thank you for joining me on this ride.

[GUEST POST]
Captain Halcyon, checking in. Programs like the one in this post are what "Cruising Altitude" is all about: summery / autumnal late-afternoon sunshine and love. Press "play" and you will find satisfaction. If it is not already within you, your search is over.
There are not many more of these recordings, I daresay. I don't think there will be many more. This program has mostly been, and currently is, an impromptu adventure happening only when it can, and "when it can" is increasingly infrequent.
There's always The Slow Drift.

We Know This Is a Moment Lost in Normal Time: Transmission 269, 2016 March 30

Tuesday Apr 05, 2016
With this program we say goodbye to a horrible March. It was a month full of psychotic weather and pathological behavior. I don't excuse myself from that (who is to say I don't control the weather?). Maybe once in five tries I got it together to have "Physical Evidence" and "The Listening Parlour." Things can only get better--that's what I have heard, anyway.
Personal notes: I recently got hold of a copy of Today by Galaxie 500--keeping up with the times, don't you know--and I don't think an album has "expressed me," lyrically, as much as this one does since, maybe, Hatful of Hollow. True story! Also, hey, I am learning to create "bubbles of relief" for myself in therapy, which is a good thing as long as you don't over-apply them. I have learned that the hard way. But may you find your own bubble of relief if you have not already done so!

In the Absence of Better Explanations: Transmission 268, 2016 March 23
Monday Apr 04, 2016
Monday Apr 04, 2016
Supposedly, I have an opportunity to become wistful about "the way things used to be." Just a few years ago, it seems, I could juggle several responsibilities at once--"multitask," as the kids say. This program provides evidence that I can't do that, or at least that I couldn't on this night. My real job intruded on my pastime, my plans for the evening changed, phone calls needed making, and we would up with the awful result of two Flying Saucer Attack songs being played.
However, I am not going to take advantage of this opportunity. Perhaps not for the best of reasons--my back catalogue is full of mistake-riddled programs. But I have listened back to this one, and it was time well spent, not nearly as atrocious as I thought.
Forgiveness, though, as my counselor tells me, is a process requiring changed behavior over time, so I still need to work on being better, and on pardoning myself.

Me, A Machine, And My Obsession: Transmission 267, 2016 March 16
Friday Apr 01, 2016
Friday Apr 01, 2016
Live albums seem to polarize people, for reasons I don't understand. "I don't like listening to people clap for things that happened when I wasn't there," I seem to recall a friend writing. Friend: if you're reading this, rest assured that the clapping on "Live At The Venue" is not very audible! Still, I love this recording, bootleggy though it may be.
In a previous life, I "did" live performance and I had/have some hangups about the recording of it. Not the paranoid hangups--I don't mind there being documentary evidence that I did a thing in a place at a time--but simply the aversion to watching / hearing myself do / say things in the past. The laws of space / time suggest that there are places where the past is always happening, but I don't have to visit those places! HOWEVER, I have no philosophical issues with recordings of OTHER people. Is this hypocritical, or just blithe? I'm going with the latter.
For damn sure I don't have any serious feelings about the ontology of live tapes. I'm fine with their being whatever the performers want them to be.

Thursday Mar 31, 2016
This has been a lost month. I've been in a fog of whatever. Vague recollections of creative projects fallen by the wayside litter the corners of my mind, but I've been busy with something, I guess, with only just enough time to churn out live radio programs until this point. Has anyone missed me? I wonder.
Anyway, there's a ton of good stuff in this show that happened a few weeks back, and some voice-over adventures. During one of these I came face-to-face with my own mental slowness, which is hard, but necessary, I guess. Also, Drummer John called in with a couple of requests that I was able to satisfy. These things are the good kind of chaos.

Here is a program I did on a cold night, and probably in a bad mood--though I did take heart when DJ Andrea, hearing the U-Men track that begins the show, said to me, "You contain multitudes." I haven't believed it for a long time, but maybe I do!
It is odd to hear how well the Amphetamine Reptile stuff and the shoegaze-y stuff sit alongside one another. Perhaps the early 90s were just a big stupid time for big stupid chords. If you want deeper thoughts, read Simon Reynolds or something; I am not wise enough to socio-historicize this.
Missed opportunity: I really should have played the Cocteau Twins' song called "Dear Heart" [not a Mrs. Miller cover]. I have played it before, but I seem to be into repetitive experiences.

[GUEST POST]
Captain Halcyon, again. Here is a rare morning program from last summer. I am afraid I may not have been what the "Radio Days" audience was looking for, but I am also fairly certain we didn't trouble anyone too much. Not troubling people is a thing this program has succeeded at, so far.
Does morning ambiance differ from afternoon ambiance in some meaningful way? Only you can decide that for yourself. I feel like it did, in this case, I would welcome the chance to try this again.
I do remember feeling lonely in the cockpit, though, now that I reflect on it. I am routinely alone but often content in that state. This time was different. Perhaps I should have encouraged requests, risky though that might have been.
Maybe someday.
