Shallowness is Forever: Transmission 238, 2015 September 29

Slowly the present is coming into focus, as we are less than a month behind the times with this latest posting. This is another "fill-in" episode--September was strangely full of these, and mostly devoid of "regular" hump-night programs--and I was in the mood for some "proper rock," hence BIFF BANG POW! (with a heartfelt endorsement from Junior). Could it really be two years since we last featured a BBP record? I suppose it must be. What a night that was. What a night this was.
Elsewhere, in blasts from the past, I just heard out of the blue from a veritable LEGEND, which reminds me. There is a Hall of Legends, and we are not finished with it. I have just been...asleep, mostly, let's call it that. For nine months, I guess. But in the words of Mike Myers's "Middle Aged Man" character, "I'M WORKING ON IT!" Thank you for your patience.

Here is yet another fill-in program, one which I did a few weeks ago. This one has more "purpose" than many of them do, I guess, aided by the occasion of (King) Sunny Ade's birthday and some personal correspondence with an old friend. Not that some of my shows lack purpose, but...ah, you know by now, probably.
As with Felix da Housecat, I didn't do proper justice to the Sunny Ade record, but that is just how things work out sometimes. "Leave them wanting more," as they say in the theatre--not that I've ever fully embraced that idea, but I have to play something at the upcoming "Festival of Evidence," don't I? Elsewhere, it's the usual quality you've come to expect, complete with baffling segues and adventures in pronunciation. This is my brand.

"Sorry we're late, but here we are." As with NBA teams, the second night of a "back to back" often produces an inferior display, but such is not the case here. This was a fun program to do, and it has been fun listening back. No features, just goodness. True, it falls apart at the end, when I seem to forget that a) this is a show about segues and b) my "job" is sometimes to provide information and novelty. But you can't have everything.
I'm reminded today of 5th grade, when for a short time I was learning to play the viola. I was not particularly good, and I was just playing in a group of kids, not taking private lessons or anything. One day at the end of class I went for my instrument case...and it wasn't there. I knew that I had brought it back to my regular classroom, but it was nowhere to be seen, and my teacher didn't know anything about it. We looked everywhere, without success.
The next day, a dismal, rainy Saturday, my whole family, including my little siblings (aged 7 and 4 at the time) searched the school grounds and the neighboring park for my instrument case, again without luck. That was one of the worst days. It was gone--nothing to be done. My biggest fear at the time was that my viola (borrowed from the school supply) was worth, like, $10,000 or something, and my family would be hopelessly in debt (it was a lot of money in 1978) on account of something that I was sure was my fault. Give me a break; I was a child.
Only it wasn't gone. I found out two days later that someone had returned it to the school, smashed to bits. That seemed a rather pointed gesture--it wasn't enough just to take the viola from me, and/or destroy it; people had to know these things had been done--and it wasn't lost on me that it hadn't happened to anyone else's instrument, just mine.
I'm musing about this because lately I've encountered senseless opposition to my work and creativity, this program being one facet of that. It's always been there, I guess, but its acuteness comes and goes.
It explains why I have felt for a long time that my "art," such as it is, is most effective when I see it as a weapon. If it ever feels that way, to you, this is part of the reason, and it's not your fault.

Hello again, radio friends. It's a new day, and I bring you a new sound file. As I try to feel better about myself today than I did yesterday, I can assure you that I feel better about this program than the last one I posted. Sometimes a program has to overcome: this one, in particular, was another "early evening" fill-in; I didn't think the occasion merited a "Physical Evidence" segment, so there was none; it was "playlist reporting" time, making the optimal strategy that of playing the fewest, longest tracks I could. And yet.
Sometimes it is just really satisfying to spin a long record, and ease back in the "captain's chair" with nothing to do but listen. This was a good night, company in the station notwithstanding. Life is never free of drama, but volume knobs can always be cranked. "Without Mercy," "Lucy Conrad," and "Hydro" sound especially good loud. You're welcome.

Bring Some Good Vibes and Your Nice Sunglasses: Transmission 234, 2015 September 3

Happy "Throwback Thursday," everyone. Remember last month? Man, seems like not much time has passed. Anyway, here is an early-evening show that I did as a fill-in. For once, in the "Joe Show" time slot, I tried to emulate his "After Dinner Dance Party" feature and played half an hour of Orbital. Elsewhere, there are miscues and horrible segues and not nearly enough of Felix Da Housecat [SORRY]. But this audio file is what happened that night.
It is a weird, dark time. This week, for once, I have been feeling not my own mortality but WRFI's. Everybody in community radio is worried about money, and death is always hanging over just about every station. Strangely I was/am at peace with it. People and ideals are falling by the wayside. Just last night I found out that a respected colleague is on "indefinite hiatus" for reasons that are unknown and probably none of my business. And there are signs, like this sound file right here, that I am on the air much too often.
These days I am trying really hard to love myself, be happy, and be nice. How would I grade myself on this? "Incomplete," probably.

Progress: we're now "just" one month behind in our postings. I have been wondering to myself whether my laziness about this is symptomatic of something. I have this problem in life, you see; I read meaning into things where there is none, most of the time, anyway.
Big ups to Lady Catharsis for gifting me a membership in the "Friends of the World Order of Ancient Headcoats" or whatever it's called. The Kyra record featured in this broadcast is the first salvo in a series of Medway-related reissues, and there will be more to come. This is a crazy record, perfect for a crazy evening; it is just the sort of thing that would have irritated me when I was younger and had a crippling perfectionism in my taste.
We will also hear more from the Honorable Chief. That too is a great recording.

It Seems Like the End of the World When You Smile: Transmission 232, 2015 August 26
Thursday Oct 01, 2015
Thursday Oct 01, 2015
In our increasingly futile quest to catch up with the present, we offer you the last program from August. Surely, there were mistakes here, but we no longer recall what they were! THEREFORE THIS IS A SOLID MIXTAPE AS FAR AS WE ARE CONCERNED.
Let's state here, also, that we were the first at WRFI to use "mixtape" as a descriptor of content. Also, we were truly all over the "stylistic" map from the beginning, knowing as we do that the word "eclectic" means something more than "a playlist that includes Bob Dylan AND The Band." Someone needed to say these things, for the record, before our time was up.
As in life, the end is not in sight, but we face death all the time.

The Darkest Night Was the Day: Transmission 231, 2015 August 25

Another weekday, another program: here's something else I did, seemingly long ago. On this night I was clearly getting some stuff out of my system; it felt good at the time, and still does, I daresay. This mixtape ripples with anger, but perhaps you will get a different impression (or, if you share mine, will find it useful at least some of the time).
Diary: lately I've been reading Memoirs of a Geezer by Jah Wobble. I have to admit that I am an unfocused reader these days; I'm unfocused about a lot of things. Something that struck me was one really brief conversation the author had with a friend in which he (re)affirmed his life's purpose. If only it were that easy! I could use that conversation, or that friend, right about now. I have been certain for a while that my "purpose" is not volunteer disc jockeying or any of the behind-the-scenes stuff I do. So all of this is just biding my time. Has if felt that way to you? And biding it for what, I wonder?

Hello again, it's me again. If you are a visitor to this site only, and don't listen live, it's been a while since you've seen or heard anything new from this program. Apologies--it's been a wild, sordid, depressing summer, as they all seem to be. In my defense, I have been doing lots of radio all the while, and you could listen live, you know.
At any rate here is a program that features one of my favorite records. Different for Domeheads was not the first Creation comp I encountered, but as Horatio would say, "it follow'd hard upon." I tend not to do well with playing records at the "appropriate" time of year but for me this will always be a summer record. "July skies" indeed, sun and anger as relentless as Slaughter Joe. This is what the last couple of months have been.

The program bristles with unintentional comedy as I get things stuck in my throat and have to pronounce a battery of things beyond my capability. Oh, and there is also The Birthday Party. I am one of those people who never quite "matured" into thinking that Nick Cave "solo" was a better thing, though I enjoy his records well enough. I really miss this band, right here.
I don't remember the nature of the "many nagging complaints" to which I refer, thankfully. The thought of searching my email in search of a mildly sardonic joke scares me. Ah, sweet oblivion!
Ah, on second thought, I probably deserved whatever complaints came my way.
