I Am The Lord Of My Own Particular Jungle: Transmission 119, 2014 April 23

Another Wednesday evening was upon us, and another occasion for an "alpha" program. Peter Buck provides the "Physical Evidence" in the form of his second post-R.E.M. LP, "I Am Back To Blow Your Mind Once Again." I seem to recall some magic in this program, some "how did we get here?" moments, but of course I don't remember them specifically. You will just have to listen.
"Why is it," Lady Catharsis asks, "that these guys [meaning Peter Buck, Jay Farrar, and other like-minded dudes, I guess?] make these oddball records when their bands break up?" I have nothing to say about Son Volt or anything in that vein, but had I been part of some leviathan rock act for three decades I would probably jump at the chance to record an IDGAF sort of thing "straight to lacquer"* with my friends. Wouldn't you?

Fast Forward and Reversing: Transmission 118, 2014 April 22

Here is an episode of "Test Pattern," a weekly late-night time slot we have at WRFI. Usually it is occupied by fill-in hosts or trainees, and as an absolute last resort it may contain pre-recorded, syndicated programming. For once I am not an absolute last resort! Anyway, on this particular night no one stepped in to fill the time, but I could, so I did.
Anyway, sometimes the program sounds like "Bombast," but not always. I am tempted to say that at times it sounds like what Captain Halcyon might do, were he willing to fly at night. Elsewhere it sounds like its own thing. The Andrew Liles pieces, by the way, have such beautiful visual waveforms--I'm too lazy to post them, so you will just have to take my word for it. Or not.

Several times have I said this, but it bears repeating: weird stuff happens when I do daytime radio. On this Easter broadcast, I was visited by what seemed like a spirit (could it have been...?). In other miraculous news, the pitch variation on Turntable 2 seemed to work in favor of This Mortal Coil, not that Lady Catharsis would care.
This impromptu / emergency broadcast began a crazy thirteen-day stretch in which I somehow fell into doing six shows. So I am now at that end of the pendulum swing, contemplating the ultimate mortality of this program or at least just craving a bit of time off. I don't even seem to care about fading out the Jazz Butcher song at the end, although Gabriela of "Alcance Latino" is a force of nature and it is just best to get out of her way, which I did.
Of course I remember that this show has some kind of impulse/mission which I can't articulate, and that I "have to" keep going for some reason. Since I last posted, I've received some positive reinforcement in that regard, so we press on. Announcement to come soon.

Angry Mom Records: Transmission 116, 2014 April 16

George from Angry Mom Records stops by, with a bunch of vinyl to spin. This was a good time, and a good show. As a bonus, he absolved me of "too much time spent in record stores," at least partially--perhaps a President or a Pope might have done more, but I will take what I can get.
Notes on the program: (a) I meant to play something I'd once purchased at No Radio Records, but didn't get around to it, much to my regret; (b) the stories about my time in Amsterdam are, "sadly," true--even the "internet cafes" (good grief, remember those?) were hash bars, but I was really using them for the internet; (c) I manage to get the French translation wrong, even though it's right there on the record cover: "perdre" is the infinitive of the verb, hence "to lose"; (d) all other anomalies can be chalked up to my usual raggedness.
