You Can't Arrest Me, I Pay Rent Here: Transmission 496, 2019 November 16
Monday Feb 10, 2020
Monday Feb 10, 2020
This is a type of experience I am increasingly struggling to make sense of as time passes. It's a Saturday night and I have volunteered to do radio, by myself. It seems like I was just basking in solitude, but that was a Wednesday night, which I know will be "me time." Maybe in the olden days this strategy of "filling up free time with radio" was partly a way of keeping myself out of trouble, and maybe it still is, but I really am trying to limit these appearances that don't have a point. At this time I know I was trying to reach Transmission 500 by Christmas, for reasons I no longer understand. 2019 was work.
Since this program was broadcast, 86 days ago now, I've gone on the air 14 times. At the gym I am listening to a transmission from 48 days ago. I'm currently editing a sound file from 30 days ago--5 shows ago. Is it day I'm seeing?
Was I really just saying I'd started doing programs that made me proud again? Yikes. I hope you enjoy the airplay software glitches and random noises from my own laptop that manifest here. Also, I think I played a couple of tracks that in hindsight seem like bad choices, departures from my own taste meant as favors for other people. I need to stop doing this. Let me just make a blanket statement--friends, I love you. But this is my program. Maybe I am just overreacting; I seem to remember being angry on the arc trainer when I listened back to this. I am frequently angry at the gym. "Have a good time," my loved ones tell me. Sure thing!
Okay, let's try this again--things get better from here.

Forget Your Worries, Embrace Abundance: Transmission 495, 2019 November 13

Much to my relief, I am flying solo on this broadcast. There are no drugged-out (or just oppositional-defiant, or whatever) unwelcome guests in the control booth. We've finally reached the current run of programs I can take pride in. I go through periods where I wonder what the payoff is, but lately I have just been enjoying the two hours of alone time that this program gives me every week, blasting the studio monitors and just basically enjoying stuff. There is a lot to unpack there, not least the literal unboxing that needs to happen in my new crib, so that I can finally blast records there one day (hopefully).
Since this program was broadcast, 88 days ago now, I've gone on the air 15 times. At the gym I am listening to a transmission from 46 days ago. I'm currently editing a sound file from 32 days ago--5 shows ago. It's all coming together, collapsing into vague almost-rememberance.
Recently I'd visited this biannual record fair that comes to Ithaca. Normally it's a sad waste of time, but on this occasion I found a sealed copy of Yello's 1983 album You Gotta Say Yes To Another Excess. This is one of many "rosebuds" for me, an album from my youth that I once had, inexplicably discarded, and desperately pined for. (I did actually see Citizen Kane once, in case you're wondering--I know you aren't--but I am not watching it again just to make sure I am deploying this reference correctly.) Anyway, "Salut Mayoumba" makes an appearance on this night, as part of a crazy and sublime triptych. So there's at least one moment to look forward to.

I am just going to come out and say that you can skip the first ten minutes or so of this program. Lady Catharsis and I are joined in the studio by the dj who preceded us, and who just kind of decided to stay. I have a feeling this person may have been chemically enhanced at the time (whomst among us, and so on) and it was kind of unnerving. I did my best "Doctor Hibbert" impersonation, another example of how I always seem to make bad choices in the moment. But, hey, the content is there, for the masochists, if you want it. I try my best to be honest, and to serve by disclosing things fully.
Since this program was broadcast, 90 days ago now, I've gone on the air 16 times. I just finished listening to a transmission from 58 days ago. I'm currently editing a sound file from 37 days ago--6 shows ago. And for reasons that are too boring to describe (even by my standards), I'm rushing to post this so I don't have to listen to this one again.
It's a shame because for the remaining 110 minutes this was a really good night, though it's not a good sign that Lady Catharsis doesn't bring any of her own records. She gets me talking, though. My therapist tells me I need to "show up" more in life, and here I am! Somewhere in here there's a nice little dig at pre-recorded programs and the people behind them. Look, the thing I have going for me is that despite taking up a lot of airtime I am always live and always real, except maybe when I am humoring narcotized people who won't leave the room.

All You've Got To Lose Is Your Mind: Transmission 493, 2019 November 6
Wednesday Feb 05, 2020
Wednesday Feb 05, 2020
Somewhere I lost touch with what other people think about things and how other people perceive the world. Or is it losing commonality? Anyway, I started noticing this maybe 12, 13 years ago. There will be this event, or cultural phenomenon, and I will have a completely different impression of it than everyone around me. That seems too serious for "mere" depression, and yet I've managed to be a functional, working adult for most of that time. Unless I'm mistaken about that too--maybe none of this is actually happening.
I'm bringing this up because I felt that this show was full of mistakes and bad choices, but station general manager Felix told me that I was "killing it" on this night. I think someone else complimented me too. So I don't know how to assess this broadcast, and I don't have any way of recapturing whatever made it special. Sorry about this!
Since this program was broadcast, 91 days ago now, I've gone on the air 16 times. I just finished listening to a transmission from 63 days ago. I'm currently editing a sound file from 36 days ago--6 shows ago. And I am scheduled to do a program tonight! What's going to happen? Who knows? It's so mysterious, so magical.
Honestly, looking at the playlist, it strikes me as an "overflow" type of program, a throwback, even though it was definitely a regular Wednesday night mothership occasion. I know that around this time I was a bit shaken at work and in life, having to deal with some heavy stuff. How did I do with it? You'll have to ask someone else.

Monday Feb 03, 2020
True confession: my first attempt at recounting this episode was such a dull, sausage-making drone that I bored even myself. So I'm trying again, this time with atmosphere, and maybe some mental sausage.
A couple of hours before the program, it rained. A lot. There was flooding in the area! And I think of the poor children and their parents, especially in our old hipster neighborhood, a Halloween wonderland, getting soaked in their heroic effort to keep the candy industry afloat.
I was working in the opposite direction, trying to get to the gym, probably for the first time in several days--my new job was exhausting me mentally and physically, and I had dived deeply into comfort food (and am still diving)--and taking my life into my own hands.
Rain is my least favorite weather to begin with, but particularly in Ithaca--usually if it's raining it's just the right temperature for our car to fog up uncontrollably. I could easily have mowed down some young family on my way to torture myself, and to be honest I probably felt nothing in particular about either part of this equation.
Feels like I just talked about how much I hate fundraising programs, and here I was in the control room again the next day. Like a goddamn salmon I keep returning, with tremendous effort, and I don't even get it.
Since this program was broadcast, 95 days ago now, I've gone on the air 17 times. I am listening to a transmission from 61 days ago. I'm currently editing a sound file from 41 days ago--7 shows ago. What does it amount to, this enormous task? And what will I even do when I am caught up? Anyway, October's finished, unless you count that unfortunate area of space-time where it is always still happening, forever.
Fittingly, I played a bunch of 4AD-adjacent stuff on this evening of "songs about ghosts and songs about dead people." It haunts me, or at least it haunts the person I have been, whom I carry around with me at all times. It is more "me" to stray from the "best available" in favor of the weird, personal, disturbing. And of course we made less money on this night than the last one. Sometimes I know what I'm talking about.

For this program my health had returned (that is, if I was actually sick the prior week, which I of course no longer remember). Also, I was in good spirits--a rarity during a fundraising drive. Let's be frank, I hate these things. They're just a confluence of bad stuff. Because I am a dandy and a child, I don't like to think about money; I have bad memories from previous co-hosting experiences; I don't actually enjoy talking on the radio that much. Fortunately I had Lady Catharsis riding shotgun, and DJ Feng Shui, a sympathetic colleague, "on the other side of the glass," so this was a good evening, which is pretty much all my notes say.
Since this program was broadcast, 95 days ago now, I've gone on the air 18 times. I am listening to a transmission from 60 days ago. I'm currently editing a sound file from 40 days ago--7 shows ago. [In some ways time is moving backwards.]
There's one little bit of sadness as I think back on this episode. It's that I miss the old "festivals of Evidence" that I used to do. But "Physical Evidence" is no longer a thing (Junior is fine, by the way); seemingly it had to die so that more important things could flourish. These "year end roundups" are wall-to-wall quality tunes, but they aren't really me. And yet from a fundraising perspective they are increasingly effective. Is that a "rising tide" thing for the station, or do I succeed more when I am not quite myself?

I sound sick and I sound like I'm using my laptop (again), which would mean that the station's equipment has predictably failed. But for me to fail less than the gear is an achievement, and I will take it. Anyway, the technical situation is due to improve, or at least that's what I hear from my inside sources.
Since this program was broadcast, 101 days ago now, I've gone on the air 18 times. I just finished listening to a transmission from 66 days ago. I'm currently editing a sound file from 39 days ago--6 shows ago.
Content-wise, this playlist looks like the "old" me, so who knows what I was thinking on this night--the usual explanation, clearing out some songs I'd been meaning to play, trying to minimize the guilt of not having played them, ignoring the bigger question of why I would have felt that way in the first place, doesn't work. I was probably finding a lot of things "not working" in my new situation. I'd started turning to comfort food and drinking more alcohol, skipping the gym, telling myself this was all temporary, etc. So thank goodness for mechanical competence, for a couple of hours at least.

Greatness in Me, You Can't Make Me Feel Less: Transmission 489, 2019 October 16
Thursday Jan 30, 2020
Thursday Jan 30, 2020
"This is surely not rock bottom," my notes read (even my notes are pretentious), "but felt like cheating somehow, and also a program with an old agenda." Well, I did return to some very recent spins, trying to--what? correct mistakes? erase moral debts? Listening back the agenda doesn't seem that old, but I'm definitely in no position to assess that. I think the big mistake of the summer was that I tried living in the moment, but for reasons beyond my control (at least that's what I'm telling myself!) "the moment" was a kind of terrible I wasn't prepared for.
But who(m)(st) are we kidding? I make mistakes every summer.
Since this program was broadcast, 106 days ago now, I've gone on the air 19 times. I'm currently editing a sound file from 37 days ago--6 shows ago.
(One of the problems with the "chronicling and specifying my slothfulness" is that the Wednesdays keep coming, you see, and so do the radio appearances. Also, I've not been mentioning my listening habits, mostly at the gym--I just finished listening to a transmission from 71 days ago. So that's four different times I'm inhabiting at once--the past I'm trying to write about, the past I'm listening to, the past I'm editing (!), and the present I'm trying to stay afloat in. How is your existence going, friend?)
The current churn is bringing to mind some existential questions about this whole radio thing. I don't know at the moment why I do it but I know I have to. And it's not even a job! There's not even a Patreon associated with this thing (I'm either too busy or too lazy to get that together).
Will it feel better if my "four temporal planes" collapse into one? Will the questions disappear, or maybe even be answered? Stay tuned to this gripping series.

Melt the House, Wake the World: Transmission 487, 2019 October 9

There's this thing I do called "letting one bad moment ruin an entire program for me." In this case it's an otherwise terrific Breakwater song: I can't get over how bad the segues around it were. Currently I'm trying to rationalize my summer "paradigm shift" by telling myself that I was trying to break free of the show's initial construct, "being about segues." And by "trying to rationalize" I really mean "lying about." I don't conceive of things that well anymore, if I ever did.
Since this program aired, 110 days ago now, I've gone on the air 20 times. I'm currently editing a broadcast from 47 days ago--7 shows ago.
"Somehow" I wound up doing eight programs in October, and I have been telling myself that in this month they started being good again. I'm not yet convinced! "Don't Stay Out Late" has an appalling lyric and I shouldn't have played it. This transmission, while too good to have been the low point, was probably the breaking point. After this I would turn back to Old Methods. That's a story for next time.

It's 4 a.m. and I have woken up from a bad dream about one of my old jobs. I still have them, but at least if I am dreaming I am sleeping, I guess. It must be my destiny to be four months in the past, in both my conscious and unconscious lives.
Since this program aired, 114 days ago now, I've gone on the air 21 times. I'm currently editing a broadcast from 47 days ago--7 shows ago.
Lady Catharsis joined me on this particular broadcast, and it was good--meaning I didn't get myself into too much trouble--but we had to stick to my repertoire in order for things to work out. I guess you could say I cheated, although I'm not competing against anyone or anything but some undefined "ideal" program. It all caught up with me at the end when I announced a tune by "Feta Coolie" and then "Feta Cootie." I probably needed more sleep then, too.
