WO' NOW. This program is a mess, in content and technique, but it seems "truer" than the conceit of the last program. I figured out a year ago that "themed" shows are not my thing--why I turn to them, other than laziness, I don't know--so I happily present the usual grab-bag of styles, energies, and periods.
There are many Billy Childish records that might serve as "Physical Evidence"--brace yourselves--but we had to begin here. It was "Friend of Bombast" Jen's birthday, and her loan of this record to me was the catalyst for a lifelong fascination with The Medway Sound. Oddly, I don't even know if Jen still likes Billy Childish's music. People change. She did tell me once that she couldn't get into The Jazz Butcher because he was "too English." What, then, is BC? But anyway--I wonder if I've ever done that, inadvertently getting a person hooked on something and then moving on. Who am I kidding? I influence no one. Whatevs.
The Pop Rivets had tried to "obey the time" [see my comments about "bad rock and roll" in the previous post], which I suppose is ultimately why I fast-forward to this band and pretend they are "the beginning." The Milkshakes made decidedly unfashionable music in the early 1980s, so of course the world decided they were fashionable for a brief period. Billy and company chugged along, not caring, which is why this and all his subsequent bands have been so great. Like the output of The Fall, or James Brown, or Fela Kuti, or The Durutti Column, the records are always the same, and always different. Every few years he accidentally becomes "hip" again, and continues not to give a damn. That's how it's done. LEGEND.
As for Kevin Supremo: there's nothing I can tell you that the song doesn't. Rock on, KCB.
