Another week, another well-executed program. That is a rare thing for me to be able to say, so you know damn well I am going to say it. I did well on this night. Was it well-conceived, though? That is a tougher call. The "vintage rave-type stuff" feels quite dated, but then so am I, and self-expression is one of the station's stated values. The exception is "Palatial," which is, forgive me, majestic. I do believe this is the third time I have played it, which might be enough, unless you think 1 spin per 124 episodes is ok, in which case, see you at transmission 500 or so.
I managed to cut down on the "dad jokes" and pedantry, at least a bit, but I do complain seriously about not knowing how I am getting my hands on the Lost Horizons album. (It could be any album--there's a backlog of exquisitely-packaged reissues waiting vainly for me to buy them.) Money is tight, yo. I am getting by on freebies and internet magic. In other news, my mental health professional is referring to me as "an object of therapeutic fascination," which I think is a fancy and nice way of saying I am a piece of work. Where is the lie, I ask you? I wonder if there is publishing in this; it would be nice to wind up in print.

Noodle and Man Are Separated by a Comma: Transmission 372, 2017 September 27

Tuesday Oct 10, 2017
Can retirement be far off? I wonder about this in more than one context. On the attached sound file, I sound at times like I'm making Dad jokes, for which I am qualified, but the execution is nevertheless poor. Elsewhere, I wax extremely "pedantic" about men, noodles, and love. At least I know at the time that I am going off the rails. That's something, right?
To think I fancied writing a book a little over a year ago! God, would I need an editor, and I am not in a position to hire one. You're stuck with these diary entries. The universe is merciful to us all.
Anyway, this is the best-executed program we have had in a while, so that is also something. PLUS, I actually did my research during the program! Though I must concede that I am only about 80% sure that Robbie Shakespeare actually plays on the Revolutionaries album. And to think I used to consider Factory Records less than forthcoming with personnel credits on their records.

Here is the penultimate broadcast of a very busy September, in which we used up our allotted memory at ye olde podcast site, and then some! Junior is my copilot on this night, though she declined to spin a record and retreated to "mere" commentary. I fear that she is growing bored with radio, and/or with me. This saddens me, not just because my daughter is growing up, but because she is a good radio person and getting better. It's about CONTENT.
DJ Midwife (aka Kristi) may or may not have been "doing good things in the world" on this night, which gave us the opportunity to synth you out here. However, I can find no confirmation of any "good things" in my email. I must have had her confused with somebody else! But surely it is a good sign that I think the best of other people.
Oh, and Hoga Nord is from Sweden, of course.

Welcome to the final Bombast of the "summer." I'm flying solo on this regular Wednesday night broadcast--I fear that this disclaimer becomes more urgent with every guest appearance by Junior. (It would be nice if someone were to say whether they still enjoyed the "basic" thing I do every week). Seemingly, I was enjoying myself on this night, and it comes through! That story about Anthony the Resident Advisor, which I share after the Sisters of Mercy tune, had to come out--it's been bugging me for 30 years that only I could spot the resemblance.
Are there any other unresolved grudges that I use this program to solve, you wonder? No, although the chronic issue--maybe Junior has something to do with this too--is What It All Amounts To. I have speculated about this before, and felt confidence in at least one prior theory, but the doubt is strong. It doesn't help when my therapist asks me what the value of self-expression is and I don't have an answer. Is that Buddhist? Or am I just really, really slow in figuring it out?

The attached program is what people call a "grower." I remember it being fun to do, but it took a couple of playbacks for me to appreciate its merits, "properly." Perhaps the vault doesn't beckon, but if this were your only mixtape from me, you'd prefer it over silence, unless you wouldn't. It doesn't even have "Physical Evidence" or a "Listening Parlour" interlude, and yet it still features wild stylistic swings and changes in tempo and rhythm. And, of course, the usual mistakes.
I had spent the day editing sound files, shopping for records, and watching the "juggalos vs nazis" event down in DC unfold on Twitter--not that any of this is necessarily audible in the program. But I thought you might like subtext. I don't often think about what others might like! Appreciate this.

Here is what I call a "featureless" program: no "physical evidence," no visit to "the listening parlour." It's just a collection of great tunes (or is it "good tunes" that I promise? I can't remember whether I was selling my selection short on this outing). Feels like pretty good flow! And more synthy than the previous program, though there is a mini "rock block" in here somewhere, "sonic trail mix" be damned.
What was it like to be me, or in Ithaca, on this particular day? (A new feature.) I believe I spent a good deal of time blocking brands on various social media platforms. One day I will get them all. Boring, you say? You try operating on as little sleep as I was having this week. Also, I started to mourn as a local pizza/music venue's owners announced they were selling their building and lot to retire, and surely the space will be given over to yet another high-rise of student housing at Ivy League prices.
Does it really get better?

If it's true that "we always get what we deserve," then you, listener, must have earned a dark, rocking, and solid program. Only a few brief bursts of light--and Wanda Jackson--provide relief the intensity. THIS IS THE GOOD CONTENT: sort of what I envisioned out of this program in the beginning, and also kind of reminiscent of the first year. Not that we are in decline or anything. Are we? "SHUT YOUR FACE," I tell myself, "THEN YOU'LL BE HAPPY."
Admittedly I never really "got" Ham and I probably still don't (it doesn't matter). I owned this record, and then I didn't, and now I do again and probably always will; that's how things go sometimes. The other day I tried "explaining" their "thing" to Lady Catharsis and had one hell of a time trying to find the words. Alternative Rock, you say, Discogs? Heavy Metal? Neither of those seem...adequate. Somehow we missed out on one of the best-ever ABBA covers, but we have played that before, and ther "rules" that need observing.

Here is one of those shows that might make you think, had you known me 30 years ago, "ah yes, he is still on his bullshit." Noisy self-released English pop! African compilations! New Order! Discussion of Burning Airlines Mail Order! Boring the hell out of my guests! It is all here, champ.
Junior, though finding many things dull here (sorry, Dan!), is giving the thumbs up to most of the content, so that's good. And I discover an increased appreciation for a Rolling Stones recording, which is also nice. I happen to agree with Junior that Muzak is not relaxing. Nor is dedicated Easy Listening--I associate it with visiting the doctor's office as a child, to get my allergy shots every single fucking week. At least the nurses were kind!
I'm also struck by how much more melodic New Order are than everything else I'm into on this night. Goodness gracious what a terrific record PCL is.

My own radio gratification being on a two-week delay--your mileage may vary--I am happy to announce that this is a good-sounding broadcast. This comes as a surprise, not for the usual reasons but because the "Official" Volume Reading Special was always one of the "lesser" Volumes to me, and yet now it brings the enjoyment. Britpop: I was not having it! And, mostly, am still not. Also, it was the mid-90s and my mind was broken. Yes, this is me, now, saying that. Sheesh. Would it be worth mentioning that the tunes that "fit" in this program are somehow not even my favorites from this disc? Talk about "opening oneself up."
Anyway, Kim Fowley makes an appearance alongside Teenage Fanclub in our ongoing (actually, hopefully ending here) series of Tunes By Problematic Individuals. He sounds rather "enhanced" here; it's sad to listen to, knowing what we know (I'm still being "coy about stuff"), but essential.

Welcome to the first of two consecutive episodes in which I find myself playing "problematic" people. First up is Michelle Shocked, whom I never "got" and certainly don't get now. But what am I to do? Junior was sitting in with me, and as part of our normal "thing," we were playing full sides of records; are the other five artists on Side 2 of Sgt. Pepper Knew My Father to be blackballed? [In all honesty I do think, pace Junior, that I'd be happy with less Courtney Pine, even though I've only played him once!]
One of my goals in doing this whole Bombast program, at least as I faintly remember it, was to see if I could give up a bit of control and open myself up to the authenticity of circumstances and other people. How is that going? I'm probably feeling a bit uncomfortable when I remark, about an hour in, that 20 minutes of Elvis Costello (a birthday observance) followed 20 minutes of the Beatles isn't exactly ON BRAND. And what, for heaven's sake, is Seeming? As I told Alex I am very impressed with his record; I hear new things in it with each listen. I'm afraid it's not exactly my cup of tea and I've never been more convinced by a record that that isn't the record's fault. So that is something!
