Cruising Altitude, Transmission 4: 2013 December 11

[GUEST POST]
Greetings, friends and lovers of Bombast. Captain Halcyon here, dropping in uninvited (by you) as is my wont. Back in December I sneaked into the WRFI cockpit to do this show. I figured on sharing it with you while it was still cold, and sure enough, it is.
A friend of Kid Catharsis, Jim Murphy, dropped by sometime during this broadcast--I think it was during "White Dusk"--and remarked, "this doesn't sound like dance music." Oh Jim! There are many ways to dance.
Anyway--apologies if you were expecting something from Kid Catharsis. He's taking a mental health day--I recommend these!--so I thought I would "fill the void."

Confused Spectators Dive For Cover: Transmission 98, 2014 February 12

The sound file attached to this post gave me an easy mnemonic device to remember this program: "this is the one in which" about half an hour of audio was mangled beyond repair. Sorry. This sort of thing happened with an episode late in November, but only for two minutes; it was "interesting" but tolerable. This transmission gave me the extended remix of that, and it was not interesting and not tolerable. So--for you, an abbreviated Bombast. No, wait, I am REBRANDING those six missing songs as a LIVE EXCLUSIVE. This is why it pays to tune in, you guys!
Accordingly this is the end of the "good" shows. I already miss that "time." But Andy Fairley is here, in spirit and in quantity. I was so excited for the recent reissue that I just had to dig out my copy of System Vertigo and give it a spin. And there are some segues here that actually make "sense" of a kind. So there is something in it for you, after all. Probably. I hope.

I think of this as the last "professional"-sounding program in an extended run of them going back to the new year. Having the benefit of a couple of weeks' time since this program aired, I can tell you that normal--that is to say, goofball--service resumes next time. Anyway, it is always good to hear The Flaming Stars, and, as it often seems, I am bewildered as to how it took so long for them to be featured as "Physical Evidence."
We were indeed playing some pretty music on this night! Dear god, how gorgeous is that Bibio song--and how good was that segue?! It makes up for some of the nonsense transitions that happened later, at least. Two very similar versions of "Another Day": perhaps not the best choice? But it is a nice tune, one which I'd always kind of ignored on that This Mortal Coil album. I've never paid attention to Roy Harper, but the original is nice too. I'll be damned if I let TMC be a gateway for any other musical obsessions, though. My mantra is going to be what Kevin Hewick says during his live set from A Factory Quartet: "Oh yeah, Roy Harper...you'll get Roy Harper later. You probably deserve him."

For the first time in a while, "Physical Evidence" is a new release. If I had an unlimited budget, and unlimited free time to hunt these things down, it would be this way every week. Never mind "Bombast vs. iTunes"--that contest quickly proved uninteresting. I never imagined Tim Cook had an alternate career fantasy as captain of the Washington Generals, but people will surprise you.
Not much time to write--LIFE IS HECTIC, YO!--but I do want to say a quick thing about Tourette, the tiny label that has released our special disc for the evening. I ordered one cd from them, and received three. No joke. Whoever said pimpin' ain't easy must have been dealing with the wrong outlets. You're welcome.

I have had a couple of vodkas, so I'll tell you something: in a very, very, VERY indirect way, this whole adventure began some ten years ago, when Junior was born. How we got from there to here is a winding, convoluted path of which I have yet to fully make sense, but I am confident that both "there" and "here" are both points upon it. For reasons I don't remember, I was listening to a few of these "fish" compilations in the week leading up to Junior's birth, so when one of them "surfaced" as the "Physical Evidence" on Junior's birthday night, I didn't second-guess it.
Frequently I allude to the idea that this program is more than fun and games. It is. That I haven't articulated why, and can't articulate why, are evidence that this is the world's worst diary. But the show does serve a purpose for me and means a great deal. There is some magic--real magic, not accidental*--in this transmission, in places at least. At such moments I think, "that's why I do this." The ultimate "why?" That will probably take therapy, the actual kind. For now, enjoy this run I'm having.

It pleases me to share with you another mixtape, this one from three weeks back. Yes, although it seems to me sometimes that the podcast site is catching up with reality, such progress is slow. Therefore I cannot share any details or anecdotes regarding this particular evening, which I suppose is good? I do know that the New Order reissue--how could I not play "Dreams Never End?"--has forced me to re-think a device I'd filed away for later use. I hope I'm up to the task when the time comes. I also know that I played a couple of tracks in this program that I had played before, which is some kind of "rule" violation, but you know what? I didn't care on the night, and I don't care now. Lou Reed, man, LOU. REED. If you don't know what that's shorthand for, you haven't been paying attention. So investigate. Or "sit and wonder."
I do know that this program made me happy; they've been making me happy routinely of late. I hope you feel the same.

[GUEST POST]
I was bored in the city, as is often the case. Forget what they say about what sort of person experiences this condition. I blame society. As always, my remedy is spontaneous, unthinking hedonism.
This was an October program. Newer programs are still available elsewhere. Meanwhile, I'm off to work on my hacienda, between cigarettes and stolen bottles of wine. I do hope that, until we converse again, you can amuse yourself with whatever else inhabits this website.
