The Hall of Legends - Breathless: Transmission 146, 2014 August 19
Friday Aug 22, 2014
Friday Aug 22, 2014
We herewith induct Breathless into the BOMBAST Hall of Legends, where they join This Mortal Coil, The Wolfgang Press, The Dub Syndicate, A.R.Kane, Little Annie, Dif Juz, Prince Far I, Coil [part 1, part 2, part 3, and part 4], Billy Childish, Stereolab [charter members], and The Fall [charter members].
Some of you, I have to guess, are visiting for the first time,
having been lured here by this special occasion. So--a special welcome to you. Poke around as you please. The hyperlink above will take you to a loose description
of the Hall of Legends, and this page
describes the "idea" of the show, such as it is. The prose you find
everywhere on the site is mostly for my own entertainment, since this is
my outlet; if you enjoy it, that's a nice bonus. Audio's at
the bottom of the post if this is all TMI.
I'd like to think I'm past the "music reviewer" phase of my life, so "just listen" is my advice to anyone who wants to know what Breathless records sound like. Or, you can take it from Ari and file them away under "Space-Rock Melancholia," which is in the ballpark, I guess. While she sees "similarities" between the band's music and other records, I'm hard-pressed to find them [then again, the record store where I worked wasn't a Virgin Megastore in London, so maybe I've been listening to the wrong things, or not enough things]--this seems to be one of the unwritten prerequisites for Hall membership. And that the music must be "out of time" somehow.
However, my first experience of the music is rooted in a specific time. This would be the "Weird Summer" of 1987: first summer after college; reunited with "friends" from high school who now seem like "strangers," somehow; living in an apartment for the first time, and with not one but two ex-"girlfriends," all the while carrying on another ill-fated dalliance; whiling my days away at a dull job almost literally in the middle of nowhere; nonetheless not having enough money, and living on peanut butter sandwiches, it seems. My only consolation during this time was that the listening rooms at the radio station were often empty, and the records were free. Sometimes [Dif Juz, Wolfgang Press] I would search deliberately; other things [A.R.Kane, Little Annie] would fall into my lap. Breathless were one of the latter. Maybe, in my mind, I should start calling this the "Summer of Legends" and not the "Summer of Starvation," which is how I actually recall it. I was learning fast, as one hopefully does pre-twenties.
So I guess you could count me as one who's gotten through "tough" times [by First World Problem standards, anyway] with the help of this music.
As it seemed to do back in those days, time moved differently for different bands when it came to record distribution, so we got The Glass Bead Game a year late, albeit at the perfect time. Dominic talks about making music in which to lose oneself, and...YES. "Across the Water" and "All My Eye and Betty Martin," on side one, were enough. John Fryer and Blackwing aside, where on earth DID this sound come from? Not too long thereafter, a friend gave me Three Times and Waving when it came out--somehow that did make it over here quickly--and that was it, for life, I guess.
There were those two periods when the band seemed [to someone far removed] to be broken up, or on extended hiatus. But in the 1990s I was out of my mind, in graduate school. And in the oughts I was similarly chasing some ill-conceived, fruitless "professional" goal. Like a lazy Death Eater, I didn't look for Breathless when they weren't around, but was always happy when they were, and are. Remarkably--because I normally can't stand "comebacks"--Blue Moon and Green to Blue are two of their best. Even better, the margins are so thin it doesn't matter. The "worst" Breathless record, whatever that might be, surpasses most of what's out there to begin with. I look forward to 30 more years of hearing from Lady Catharsis that I play this music too much.
Finally--I didn't know about Tristram Latimer-Sayer's circumstances until I spoke to Dominic last week. My sincere wishes for a speedy and thorough recovery for him.

"Thick and fast"--doesn't necessarily sound good, depending on your perspective, but that is how we roll this week. "CAN YOU LIVE AS FAST AS ME?" Good damn question.
To keep the nomenclature consistent, I suppose this would be a "beta" program--a fill-in on short notice. "I like the haphazard shows," says Lady C, so she will be pleased [perhaps "was"--I haven't had time to ask!]. I hope this pleases you as well.
It's true, I have reached the point--maybe it's just a phase--where I feel I must apologize for getting on the air. So this program is full of that. Mercifully, I don't talk much. There are some good tunes on display here--even "Kingdome!" Pay special attention to the closing song. It merely hints at the greatness that awaits.

We are positively hurtling towards an exciting finish to the week, as my obsessive-compulsive tendencies vie with my desire to get the latest Hall of Legends episode posted. This program happened because...oh, what am I saying? This was a regular "alpha" program, mostly new (and newly-reissued) stuff bookended by a couple of 1980s chestnuts/tributes. Structurally problematic? Yes, but people matter, whether they are post-punk heroes or "dear friends" of a personal sort.
Mistakes: have I made a few? You know it. Mostly, though, this is well-executed. At least with this "No Label" release, all four of the songs came off without a hitch. Which is nice--that Odd Numbers EP is pleasing on many levels.
Special shout-out to listener Matt, who clued me in to DAMA/LIBRA. And to Mount Kimbie, whose album title I did remember a bit later: Cold Spring Fault Less Youth. There.

Torn between doing an "easy" program and a great one--because greatness does not come easily to me--I opted for lazy heroism, in this lamest of all months. Still recovering from my move, which has been more painful than I care to recount right now, I reached for something in plentiful supply at Chez Catharsis [Lady C has christened the new place "The Warren," for reasons she hasn't yet shared with me]: a Durutti Column disc. It was, depending upon whom or what you believe, Vini Reilly's birthday a night or two before. "Always do your best," as the dude says.
Random notes: Brian Harris's Hawkwind cover really did get some random love in real time, which was nice; "Leaving the Physical World" really did seem a capital idea in the moment [see above]; "Maniac" was and is, on further listening, a Michael Sembello homage of a sort, and all the better for it.

The relentless (non-)progress of BOMBAST continues, this week with a "featureless" program done under considerable duress. I speak the truth when I say that Steph was being very nice to me prior to the program, and I didn't deserve it. Personal considerations demanded that I assemble this program as "lazily" as possible, so here it is in all its unspeakable quality.
HOWEVER, I did get a heads-up from the recently-renamed I Fucking Love You that there was a new track out in the ether. So we do get to hear that one, as I just managed to conjure up the physical and mental energy to download the song, fire up the Google translator, hit upon "Bosnian" as the voice that "sounded best," and subsequently "crack the code" of the new band name. "Small victories," as Robert Barton [I think, anyway, it was he] would say.

Friday Aug 08, 2014
Here we are, we always are. This was a Friday evening excursion, [as always] taken on account of some forgotten contingency. Anyway, this is a good selection of tunes right here, spun with a fair amount of competence. Not a waste of your time!
Again, because this was two long weeks ago, I no longer remember the exact circumstances, but I was in some kind of mood. Whoever that "Eddie" is, and whatever his transgressions, I'm not often compelled to be that snarky towards a particular person. It must have been heat, or exhaustion, or "no internet at home" that was playing havoc with my brain.

"Indeed, my lord, it follow'd hard upon." The second show in two nights finds us bereft of Physical Evidence but in good form nevertheless. It was nice to do a "shift" on Wednesday night, which I still [wrongly] consider the home of this program. Tuesdays merely "work." Perhaps in time I will warm to them.
It had been a disgusting day, sweaty early and rainy late. Why anyone romanticizes summers in the Finger Lakes I have no idea, but coupling this weather with a house move has to be someone's idea of how best to punish me for my many failures. Sometimes the radio is all I have to look forward to. Thank you for traveling this path with me.

[GUEST POST]
Halcyon here. Such drama and upheaval this life offers. After a 6-month absence, which happened for no reason at all, I returned to the WRFI airwaves, also for no reason. Alas, my "program" is no longer a "pop-up" but a regularly-scheduled excursion for the summer. I refuse to take off before sunrise or to land after sunset, so I can endure this regularity...for now.
I tried to post this on Soundcloud, but was thwarted by their auto-detection software and presented with a copyright claim. I was surprised and hurt by this, not to mention embarrassed that I had shared with you the work of some artist who actually cares about such things. No good can come from such a person, I am sure of it. However, I will follow the lead of Kid Catharsis, my host on this webpage, and upload a complete sonic "document," shameful inclusions and all.

Drums After Drums Lined Up On The Shelf: Transmission 139, 2014 July 22

Monday Aug 04, 2014
Good grief, has it been two weeks since we posted a thing? Where has the time gone? Oh yes, that's right, Chez Catharsis moved is still moving, that's where. Related: we were without internet for a week, and my other work for the station had to happen onsite, so [naturally?] I did a bunch of other programs. I'd like to say those are forthcoming and imminent, but...you know.
Anyway, this was a fun little show on account of the Drumulator 7-inch. I have never owned one of these instruments, but they have given me much pleasure--you too, probably--so I hope that comes across. Before there was an internet, I spent many a fruitless hour trying to get those booming Cocteau / Big Black drum sounds with inferior gadgets, which says more about me than it does about those humble machines. But enough of confessions.
