This has been a lost month. I've been in a fog of whatever. Vague recollections of creative projects fallen by the wayside litter the corners of my mind, but I've been busy with something, I guess, with only just enough time to churn out live radio programs until this point. Has anyone missed me? I wonder.
Anyway, there's a ton of good stuff in this show that happened a few weeks back, and some voice-over adventures. During one of these I came face-to-face with my own mental slowness, which is hard, but necessary, I guess. Also, Drummer John called in with a couple of requests that I was able to satisfy. These things are the good kind of chaos.

Here is a program I did on a cold night, and probably in a bad mood--though I did take heart when DJ Andrea, hearing the U-Men track that begins the show, said to me, "You contain multitudes." I haven't believed it for a long time, but maybe I do!
It is odd to hear how well the Amphetamine Reptile stuff and the shoegaze-y stuff sit alongside one another. Perhaps the early 90s were just a big stupid time for big stupid chords. If you want deeper thoughts, read Simon Reynolds or something; I am not wise enough to socio-historicize this.
Missed opportunity: I really should have played the Cocteau Twins' song called "Dear Heart" [not a Mrs. Miller cover]. I have played it before, but I seem to be into repetitive experiences.

[GUEST POST]
Captain Halcyon, again. Here is a rare morning program from last summer. I am afraid I may not have been what the "Radio Days" audience was looking for, but I am also fairly certain we didn't trouble anyone too much. Not troubling people is a thing this program has succeeded at, so far.
Does morning ambiance differ from afternoon ambiance in some meaningful way? Only you can decide that for yourself. I feel like it did, in this case, I would welcome the chance to try this again.
I do remember feeling lonely in the cockpit, though, now that I reflect on it. I am routinely alone but often content in that state. This time was different. Perhaps I should have encouraged requests, risky though that might have been.
Maybe someday.

Technical notes: there were some well-conceived segues in this dynamic broadcast. The airplay computer was doing a new and weird thing wherein it was squelching the beginning of all of Junior's voiceovers. It sounds really, really dumb, and doesn't get better. Sorry about that.
Diary: in the early days of the internet, before Discogs was a thing, I probably spent more time hunting a copy of the Nightlands compilation than any other record I own. It's not even on "heavy rotation" in my life--it was and is simply a core memory. At least that is what I decided at some point, so I had to have it. I owned an old issue of Music From the Empty Quarter, in about 1991 or 1992, which contained a mail-order listing including this record. "Fool, you should have bought it then," I would tell myself. I don't speak nicely to myself.
I finally found a copy on the now defunct GEMM.com. Its owner was this weird but nice lady in Montreal who took FOREVER in getting it to me--she wanted my assurance that this record would be getting a good home. She wanted correspondence. I had never before, and have not since, auditioned to own a recording. [Wait, that is not exactly true, but I will get in trouble for discussing it here.] Anyway, Lady Catharsis can testify that every morning before sunrise, on our walk to the bus stop, I would grumble incessantly about this record and how it wasn't in my hands yet even though I had paid for it. It was getting depressing. I was losing my ability to function. This is one of my many failures as a professional.
She can also testify that I am just "like that" when it comes to mail order. It may not be for me. I want things RIGHT DAMN NOW. I am currently awaiting about a half-dozen "gifts" that have been so long in coming that I'm not even sure I will be able to enjoy them when they arrive.
By comparison, the new 2XLP of Blue Moon got here in a hurry, and it is thoroughly enjoyable!
