Then They Expect You To Pick a Career: Transmission 295, 2016 August 10

green_cefalexin_pills.jpg Investing emotionally in dates, remembrances, and symbolism is an unfortunate habit of mine. A lingering vestige of my Catholic upbringing, maybe, this tendency has left my calendar littered with "important" dates of varying heaviness. This one is a feast day, that one is a solemn observance, this other one requires a duty of me, and so on. It's exhausting on more than one level.

Of course this was a regularly scheduled Hump Night program, and could have been (in my mind), but then again it actually was (in the real world), because the drama was so far backstage it wasn't happening in three-dimensional space. At some point in the past, Grandma Catharsis told me that August 10 was the day I was due to be born. I was late. I am always late! It has become the story of my life. I have internalized this narrative. Would you have gleaned any of this from the program content, had I not told you? "Holy Night," maybe, but that could mean anything. Of course the answer is "no." But it was meaningful to me. I was keeping vigil. Does that act produce a trace of energy, perceptible beneath the noise, that somehow survives in this bit-starved .mp3? Who is to say?

This content might have appeared later, had I not claimed a timeslot two nights prior, in a fit of "rank opportunism." Time is a funny thing! Anyway, August 8 is yet another "holy night" of an entirely different kind, silly and grave all at once. It's a bookend. The other is coming.

Finally, due to a time difference, and an actual birthday, this night should have marked the re-opening of the Hall of Legends but due to my own indecision and crippling shyness that didn't happen. Once again I am late with an important thing.

It All Comes Down to Girls That Break My Heart: Transmission 294, 2016 August 8

heautoscopy.jpg Recent developments have forced me to do some letting go--or, let's give me some credit--have given me the opportunity to choose to let things go, so hopefully you will forgive me if this and other August programs are a bit "loose." Given that the "underground music" release calendar is still, surprisingly, based around the "Western" academic schedule, this month was bound to feel like a clearinghouse of things that didn't make it onto the playlists of "tighter" programs. And so far it does.

We've got a "Listening Parlour" excursion that happens about four weeks later, I think, than it was originally meant to happen. And a grab-bag of tunes that are a bit past their "sell by" date (not that we are selling anything), with no "Physical Evidence" to tie everything together (warning: this is going to continue for a while). Maybe this is a dress rehearsal for when my stash of "Physical Evidence" runs out--as it must someday--if, that is, I make it that far & continue to keep going. Who knows? Still, freed from any kind of pressure or organization, I deliver an excellent program here, I have to say.

Walk Me Down the Lane Where Shadows Will Be: Transmission 293, 2016 August 3

spleen_and_ideal.jpg With this program we began August, traditionally a vacation month for most civilized people. But excellence never sleeps! And I am always vacant. So, really, nothing new here.

This feels like a turned page, however, probably because the poststructuralist resort I operate had shut down for the summer, and life was beginning to feel "normal" again. Meaning: full of inadequacy and scarcity and radical self-hatred AND boredom.

Thank goodness for summertime compilations! I don't know what I would do, as a person or a disc jockey, without them.

I Know That You Would Like Me If Only You Could See Me: Transmission 292, 2016 July 27

facticity.jpeg Relative sanity was approaching on this particular night. I imagine it "approaching" in a white stretch limousine, and in this fantasy I see it turning a corner, slowing to a crawl, its headlights blinding me through the steam rising from the pavement after an annoyingly brief thunderstorm. It's just a block or two away; it's here for me, but full of menace.

It was almost back to "real life" at the time I did this program, my summer camp drawing to a close. "You have to be high-maintenance," an administrator told me just now, "to be involved with THAT." Hmmm--camper by camper, it varies. But...yeah.

I recall feeling great about this program at the time--the first such episode in a while, and it's been that way since. Here's to clarity!

Gold Is the Sky in Concentrate: Transmission 291, 2016 July 20

coil_fur_suits.jpg Another day, another excursion--this is how we used to roll. Feels good! We continue our summer of fatigue, blurred vision, triggering, persistent stickiness, and more fatigue. Brush fires are coming next, I can just feel it.

Yes, I do play Coil quite often, but they are legends for a reason. We could do much worse, and we probably have! For whatever reason, I do not feel that they are "summer music," even though they sound good here. In fact I am waiting for two Coil records in the mail right at this moment, and as fate would have it, these may not be summer music, but that's yet another rant about mail order in the making.

I have observed that many of the used Coil records for sale on the internet come with "stained" covers. I shudder to imagine why, and with what.

Why the Grass Is Green and Why the Wind Is Never Seen: Transmission 290, 2016 July 16

cosmic_machine_sequel.jpg We're falling back behind schedule again--now at 26 days, by my questionable math. Here is a Saturday night program that should probably not have been as long as it was, but I don't control things anymore. I was set to follow a roller-derby broadcast, which I thought might leave me just a few minutes of airtime after a long spell of babysitting an internet stream, but (mercifully? it was a crap bout and a rather disinterested play-by-play experience) we only broadcast one half of a doubleheader.

It was I and only I, though, who decided to use Life At The Top on a fill-in program rather than the usual Wednesday night hullabaloo. This record is, in post-Inside Out parlance, a "core memory" for me. Probably for several other KDVS alumni as well--I recall several of these tunes being used as promo underscoring in the mid-80s (I spent much time questing after this or that record that appeared in a radio ad back in the day).

Mistakes were made, but they are always made. Also, here's another program in which I felt compelled to respond to a Great One's death. 2016 can get in the sea, any minute now.

A Discontinuous Continuity: Transmission 289, 2016 July 13

colourbox_philip_glass.jpeg Greetings, friends. Our posting is now a mere 22 days behind schedule. We are quickly approaching professionalism, and it's the kind for which you do not even have to pay! Let's not think about that too hard.

I really could have sworn that July was a month full of radio errors, but listening continues to tell me a different story. This is GOOD STUFF on the elliptical, or treadmill, or recumbent bike, or on a walk, or maybe just sitting around (I don't do much sitting around, so I would not know).

We've had 30 years to accept that we weren't going to hear any more music from Colourbox, but Steven Young's death finally made that a certainty, I guess. I loved those guys. Rest in Peace.

Hustlers Rustle and Pimps Pimp the Beat: Transmission 288, 2016 July 9

R-1692804-1465632179-2927_jpeg.jpg Here is another case of reality not matching my perception or recollection. I could have sworn this was a clusterfuffle of a program, but tell me where the mistakes are. I mean, other than the usual ones, involving taste and judgment.

There were several celebrity birthdays on this particular date. We do love our observances. Classic "Listening Parlour" stuff here: I would never of my own volition play any of the three songs Lady Catharsis chose for this night. Maybe this is the platonic ideal of this feature, right here.

And it *is* true that adolescent Lady Catharsis prayed for Bon Scott's soul the day she heard that he died. How could I not love someone who could do that?

We’ll Do Better Next Time, I Promise: Transmission 287, 2016 July 6

artofspectres.jpg We have basically reached the "one month behind schedule" milestone, which is uncharted territory for us. Earlier, I promised that we would see/hear some egregious mistakes, and I have to say that I am not sure this program fulfills that promise. A strange aspect of looking/listening back to these "tapes" is that of comedy equaling tragedy plus time, or, more accurately, a smiley-face equaling a sad face plus time.

There is a bad miscue early on, which undoubtedly clouded my overall impression of the entire show--I even allude to it--and some surprisingly dynamic tunes that get in the way of my voiceovers (or is it the other way around?). Then finally there is the Bauhaus tune, which I regret to say my parents did listen to despite my admonition. I lack authority in this world.
