My Skin Is Deeper Than Is Thought: Transmission 368, 2017 September 13

Here is what I call a "featureless" program: no "physical evidence," no visit to "the listening parlour." It's just a collection of great tunes (or is it "good tunes" that I promise? I can't remember whether I was selling my selection short on this outing). Feels like pretty good flow! And more synthy than the previous program, though there is a mini "rock block" in here somewhere, "sonic trail mix" be damned.
What was it like to be me, or in Ithaca, on this particular day? (A new feature.) I believe I spent a good deal of time blocking brands on various social media platforms. One day I will get them all. Boring, you say? You try operating on as little sleep as I was having this week. Also, I started to mourn as a local pizza/music venue's owners announced they were selling their building and lot to retire, and surely the space will be given over to yet another high-rise of student housing at Ivy League prices.
Does it really get better?

If it's true that "we always get what we deserve," then you, listener, must have earned a dark, rocking, and solid program. Only a few brief bursts of light--and Wanda Jackson--provide relief the intensity. THIS IS THE GOOD CONTENT: sort of what I envisioned out of this program in the beginning, and also kind of reminiscent of the first year. Not that we are in decline or anything. Are we? "SHUT YOUR FACE," I tell myself, "THEN YOU'LL BE HAPPY."
Admittedly I never really "got" Ham and I probably still don't (it doesn't matter). I owned this record, and then I didn't, and now I do again and probably always will; that's how things go sometimes. The other day I tried "explaining" their "thing" to Lady Catharsis and had one hell of a time trying to find the words. Alternative Rock, you say, Discogs? Heavy Metal? Neither of those seem...adequate. Somehow we missed out on one of the best-ever ABBA covers, but we have played that before, and ther "rules" that need observing.

Here is one of those shows that might make you think, had you known me 30 years ago, "ah yes, he is still on his bullshit." Noisy self-released English pop! African compilations! New Order! Discussion of Burning Airlines Mail Order! Boring the hell out of my guests! It is all here, champ.
Junior, though finding many things dull here (sorry, Dan!), is giving the thumbs up to most of the content, so that's good. And I discover an increased appreciation for a Rolling Stones recording, which is also nice. I happen to agree with Junior that Muzak is not relaxing. Nor is dedicated Easy Listening--I associate it with visiting the doctor's office as a child, to get my allergy shots every single fucking week. At least the nurses were kind!
I'm also struck by how much more melodic New Order are than everything else I'm into on this night. Goodness gracious what a terrific record PCL is.

My own radio gratification being on a two-week delay--your mileage may vary--I am happy to announce that this is a good-sounding broadcast. This comes as a surprise, not for the usual reasons but because the "Official" Volume Reading Special was always one of the "lesser" Volumes to me, and yet now it brings the enjoyment. Britpop: I was not having it! And, mostly, am still not. Also, it was the mid-90s and my mind was broken. Yes, this is me, now, saying that. Sheesh. Would it be worth mentioning that the tunes that "fit" in this program are somehow not even my favorites from this disc? Talk about "opening oneself up."
Anyway, Kim Fowley makes an appearance alongside Teenage Fanclub in our ongoing (actually, hopefully ending here) series of Tunes By Problematic Individuals. He sounds rather "enhanced" here; it's sad to listen to, knowing what we know (I'm still being "coy about stuff"), but essential.

Welcome to the first of two consecutive episodes in which I find myself playing "problematic" people. First up is Michelle Shocked, whom I never "got" and certainly don't get now. But what am I to do? Junior was sitting in with me, and as part of our normal "thing," we were playing full sides of records; are the other five artists on Side 2 of Sgt. Pepper Knew My Father to be blackballed? [In all honesty I do think, pace Junior, that I'd be happy with less Courtney Pine, even though I've only played him once!]
One of my goals in doing this whole Bombast program, at least as I faintly remember it, was to see if I could give up a bit of control and open myself up to the authenticity of circumstances and other people. How is that going? I'm probably feeling a bit uncomfortable when I remark, about an hour in, that 20 minutes of Elvis Costello (a birthday observance) followed 20 minutes of the Beatles isn't exactly ON BRAND. And what, for heaven's sake, is Seeming? As I told Alex I am very impressed with his record; I hear new things in it with each listen. I'm afraid it's not exactly my cup of tea and I've never been more convinced by a record that that isn't the record's fault. So that is something!

We Smoked in Heaven and We Laughed Off Hell: Transmission 363, 2017 August 23
Tuesday Sep 05, 2017
Tuesday Sep 05, 2017
Feels like regular service for the first time in nearly a month. I was in my usual time slot--following "the Fre(ida) Pile"--and Junior was in town, so the bit didn't have to be delivered via Apple voice memo. This program gives me pleasure, more than I expected (if only I could feel this in real time!), despite segues about which I can only say that I must have understood at some point what I was trying to do. A listener phoned in to give kudos, which is distressingly rare.
And, "finally," Happy Mondays provided the featured disc--heavy, I can report, on the Squirrel and G-Man era tunes. (Hot take: that album is better than Bummed.) Early entries in the "Physical Evidence" series included anecdotes about the actual disc played--who was the person who found himself able to write these??? I'm not up to it, other than to say that the aforementioned Squirrel got me through a very tough time. This (John) Peel Sessions disc doesn't ring a bell in terms of when I acquired it, though I just implied why I did so.
The Sound have made appearances in some recent playlists, I think because The Blog That Celebrates Itself put out a tribute and I decided I would rather hear the originals. Poor Adrian Borland: his band, like the Chameleons and the Comsat Angels, was something that simply missed me when it was happening. Blame it on radio, or record distributors, or whatever. White Postpunk Guys, all--playing them to see if they can make me feel anything. At times they do.

Saturday Sep 02, 2017
This transmission marks our return to the (all too) regular Wednesday night time, after a terrible but mercifully brief hiatus. Lady Catharsis and Junior were still out of town--both had to "phone in" their voiceovers--and I was still helping myself to multiple courses of dessert every night. August is usually a rough month for me, for numerous reasons, but this one set a new standard. I felt bad about this program on the night, but as usual it is actually quite decent and good in places.
Since this was Charlottesville / sheetcake week and we were all learning (or relearning) how to deal and not deal with Nazis, it seems fitting that I'm featuring a record firmly rooted in the Reagan era. Because of Bitburg and other things we used to tell ourselves that the Nazis were among us then--who knows, they might have been--such an innocent time! If nostalgia is all I have to offer, we might as well make it interesting.

As I warned in the prior episode, I was flying solo for this one. I daresay I was already desperately lonely, though I had dropped off Lady Catharsis and Junior at the airport a mere 12 hours earlier. What can I tell you? I am not a strong person, I guess. Fortunately, even the weak can make decent radio.
Re. "the opinion portion of the program": I feel compelled to say it does seem weird, first of all, for anyone to release a five-cd set in 2017. Probably even weirder to think that the world was thirsty for a rambling goth retrospective. Though I am known to wear black and listen to Bauhaus I have never had a membership card, so (not even perhaps) I am not in the best position to comment on this. Would love to hear some testimony on how, say, The Bolshoi exemplify this genre. Or is it a case wherein if I have to ask I will never know?

Here Comes the Bishop's Daughter: Transmission 360, 2017 August 5

Surprise! You probably thought you were rid of me for two weeks, but fate and jetBlue Airlines have made you their bitch. Because here I am, along with Junior, in Ithaca when we should be in California, and delivering an unfavorable substitute to a very in-favor program.
Notes: at one point in the show I use the phrase "hotel airport," of which I am sure there is one somewhere, but Syracuse is not such a place. We got an almost-free meal out of it, and that is the absolute best that can be said. We also discussed libertarian eclipse preparation, about which I seem to have been wrong, at least locally: eclipse glasses were given out freely at the local observatory, while in stock (nevertheless I missed out). I'll be damned, though, if there isn't some backwater town somewhere in the "path of totality" where you had to pay for them. I'd bet money on it, if I had money. ALSO I haven't bothered to fact-check that eclipse in '93 or '94 that I referred to, so I'm not sure whether El Paso was "in the path" or not. Waiting to sit with that embarrassment, when it comes, as it surely will. Finally, I will never understand the fascination with female voices on the radio--some listener wrote in asking Junior's age, while mine, to my knowledge, has never been a matter for speculation among our listeners. At any rate, Junior delivers the perfect answer; you will just have to listen for it.

[GUEST POST]
SHEDDING STEWARDSHIP of the Bombastic web archive, it is I, Guy LeBatard, with what is my last ever transmission, for now. Whether I knew it at the time doesn't matter, but it sounds like I did. Boring as it already was to push these sausages through the tube on schedule, apparently the following Sunday was "another dreadful day of sunlight and warmth," so I ghosted. I wonder if Captain Halcyon did a program, but it's not my responsibility. This transmission is "good" where it needs to be and "bad" where it is meant to be. Since there are no endings in nature, and we lack the bravery to face those we construct, let's say that someday I may return spontaneously. kid catharsis has a phrase about this that he is saving for his own time, so as a grudging bourgeois gesture in recognition of his hospitality, I will not steal it.
Fuck sunsets.
