No, I Don't Know, Too: Transmission 243, 2015 October 21

"You sound stuck," a Friend of Bombast tells me. It's true. I am. I'm working on it; whether I'm "doing my best" remains to be seen. It's been a weird four months or so, but tbh the entire ride has been weird.
I was recently reminded that I'll be missing the 3rd birthday (observed) of this program on account of being at DJ Segundo's crib for Thanksgiving. That (the cancellation) seems about right, pretty much par for our current course. But why was I reminded of this? Because at a recent station fundraiser party I was told by a colleague that it sounded like I was on the air all the time (I'm not). There is always too much of me, it seems, dating back to when there was none of me.
Do you know why the Wednesday prior to Thanksgiving, "Thanksgiving eve," if you like, is the program's observed birthday? Because we had just about the softest "soft launch" in the history of radio. A supportive (dare I say rogue?) board member of WRFI snuck me onair, basically, on a night when there would be very few people listening. There was no other way--I couldn't have airtime just for the asking, as others at the station soon received, much less was I going to be cold-called and asked to do a show, as others were. I heard at the time that some board members were opposed to my having a program. Never mind that a white volunteer who started on the same day I did had already been given a program, there was of course nothing differential about my not being given one. There never is. (That person, bee-tee-dubs, is no longer with the station, having ghosted us a couple of years ago, while I'm still here doing off-the-air stuff, but don't let that convince you that the station ever bets on the wrong horse.)
So anyway, here is one of the best, or worst, or most typical programs I have done in my three years at WRFI. Your phone or .mp3 player will try to convince you that it's approximately two hours long, but don't let that stop you thinking it's more like four, or twenty, or whatever fits your narrative.

Sometimes I really do have only a grab-bag of tunes that don't really fit together except in some fleeting and forgotten syntax in my head, or, if you prefer, an amateur Cubist puzzle. This was one of those times. I just had some stuff I felt like hearing and sharing.
I was correct, bee-tee-dubs, when I pointed out that Don't Let The Hope Close Down was the only record released on the Hope Springs label. I know how that goes--I, too, appeared once on a record that was the only thing its "parent company" ever issued. Similarly, "my" record was not successful. Dissimilarly, it was not a thing I wanted to hear on this night! I do listen to it, though, sometimes, when I'm alone. Like Hope, it failed to save anything, except maybe a decent folk tune, for posterity. We'll see.

Here is another broadcast, this one regularly scheduled, as they all seem to be these days. It wasn't a special occasion, but I decided it was finally time for a special disc, the Brain in the Wire compilation (I am really into comps these days). I wrote a while back about a three-disc collection of Wax Trax! material not aging well; this one has aged well and I am still into it.
I actually don't remember any slip-ups from this episode, so I guess that's good. Probably some inexplicable segues, as always. Oh, and some weirdness in the voice-overs. Talking--I am not so good at it, which is probably why this is my medium of choice.

Happy October, Bombasticons! Here, for various reasons, is the last of the "fill-in" programs to date. It is a good one, featureless though it is. Listening back, I found myself thinking a couple of times, "this is an incredible show." I'm not prone to doing this. Anyway.
Ramping down my activity so that I'm only doing the once-weekly radio thing has been good. It has allowed me to devote time to "other things." I guess. It makes the shows seem more important, more valuable somehow.
This program is a good nocturnal listen. For some reason (besides the fact that it's good) I decided to play all of Simon Scott's Insomni. I don't know why--seems more like the sort of thing Halcyon would play, but he doesn't seem to be around, and the piece might be too "nighttime" for him anyway.

Those who follow this program (there are some such people, right?) are well aware that this website is woefully behind the times. Here, unexpectedly, is a post-hoc rationalization of all that: a special (albeit regularly scheduled) episode featuring pre-release PHYSICAL EVIDENCE (the best kind), which I promised not to post until after the release date. That was five days ago, so HOW FRESH IS THIS? Pretty fresh, by our standards.
The Post-Creation EP by The Julia Sound is a loud, beautiful mess, reminding me of some of the great EPs from the golden years of EPs, while not really sounding like any of them in particular. It was so nice to receive mail, and to be reminded that this program makes at least a small difference sometimes. September was a crap month otherwise--this release gave it the fiery funeral it deserved.

Shallowness is Forever: Transmission 238, 2015 September 29

Tuesday Oct 20, 2015
Slowly the present is coming into focus, as we are less than a month behind the times with this latest posting. This is another "fill-in" episode--September was strangely full of these, and mostly devoid of "regular" hump-night programs--and I was in the mood for some "proper rock," hence BIFF BANG POW! (with a heartfelt endorsement from Junior). Could it really be two years since we last featured a BBP record? I suppose it must be. What a night that was. What a night this was.
Elsewhere, in blasts from the past, I just heard out of the blue from a veritable LEGEND, which reminds me. There is a Hall of Legends, and we are not finished with it. I have just been...asleep, mostly, let's call it that. For nine months, I guess. But in the words of Mike Myers's "Middle Aged Man" character, "I'M WORKING ON IT!" Thank you for your patience.

Here is yet another fill-in program, one which I did a few weeks ago. This one has more "purpose" than many of them do, I guess, aided by the occasion of (King) Sunny Ade's birthday and some personal correspondence with an old friend. Not that some of my shows lack purpose, but...ah, you know by now, probably.
As with Felix da Housecat, I didn't do proper justice to the Sunny Ade record, but that is just how things work out sometimes. "Leave them wanting more," as they say in the theatre--not that I've ever fully embraced that idea, but I have to play something at the upcoming "Festival of Evidence," don't I? Elsewhere, it's the usual quality you've come to expect, complete with baffling segues and adventures in pronunciation. This is my brand.

"Sorry we're late, but here we are." As with NBA teams, the second night of a "back to back" often produces an inferior display, but such is not the case here. This was a fun program to do, and it has been fun listening back. No features, just goodness. True, it falls apart at the end, when I seem to forget that a) this is a show about segues and b) my "job" is sometimes to provide information and novelty. But you can't have everything.
I'm reminded today of 5th grade, when for a short time I was learning to play the viola. I was not particularly good, and I was just playing in a group of kids, not taking private lessons or anything. One day at the end of class I went for my instrument case...and it wasn't there. I knew that I had brought it back to my regular classroom, but it was nowhere to be seen, and my teacher didn't know anything about it. We looked everywhere, without success.
The next day, a dismal, rainy Saturday, my whole family, including my little siblings (aged 7 and 4 at the time) searched the school grounds and the neighboring park for my instrument case, again without luck. That was one of the worst days. It was gone--nothing to be done. My biggest fear at the time was that my viola (borrowed from the school supply) was worth, like, $10,000 or something, and my family would be hopelessly in debt (it was a lot of money in 1978) on account of something that I was sure was my fault. Give me a break; I was a child.
Only it wasn't gone. I found out two days later that someone had returned it to the school, smashed to bits. That seemed a rather pointed gesture--it wasn't enough just to take the viola from me, and/or destroy it; people had to know these things had been done--and it wasn't lost on me that it hadn't happened to anyone else's instrument, just mine.
I'm musing about this because lately I've encountered senseless opposition to my work and creativity, this program being one facet of that. It's always been there, I guess, but its acuteness comes and goes.
It explains why I have felt for a long time that my "art," such as it is, is most effective when I see it as a weapon. If it ever feels that way, to you, this is part of the reason, and it's not your fault.

Hello again, radio friends. It's a new day, and I bring you a new sound file. As I try to feel better about myself today than I did yesterday, I can assure you that I feel better about this program than the last one I posted. Sometimes a program has to overcome: this one, in particular, was another "early evening" fill-in; I didn't think the occasion merited a "Physical Evidence" segment, so there was none; it was "playlist reporting" time, making the optimal strategy that of playing the fewest, longest tracks I could. And yet.
Sometimes it is just really satisfying to spin a long record, and ease back in the "captain's chair" with nothing to do but listen. This was a good night, company in the station notwithstanding. Life is never free of drama, but volume knobs can always be cranked. "Without Mercy," "Lucy Conrad," and "Hydro" sound especially good loud. You're welcome.

Happy "Throwback Thursday," everyone. Remember last month? Man, seems like not much time has passed. Anyway, here is an early-evening show that I did as a fill-in. For once, in the "Joe Show" time slot, I tried to emulate his "After Dinner Dance Party" feature and played half an hour of Orbital. Elsewhere, there are miscues and horrible segues and not nearly enough of Felix Da Housecat [SORRY]. But this audio file is what happened that night.
It is a weird, dark time. This week, for once, I have been feeling not my own mortality but WRFI's. Everybody in community radio is worried about money, and death is always hanging over just about every station. Strangely I was/am at peace with it. People and ideals are falling by the wayside. Just last night I found out that a respected colleague is on "indefinite hiatus" for reasons that are unknown and probably none of my business. And there are signs, like this sound file right here, that I am on the air much too often.
These days I am trying really hard to love myself, be happy, and be nice. How would I grade myself on this? "Incomplete," probably.
