Melt the House, Wake the World: Transmission 487, 2019 October 9

There's this thing I do called "letting one bad moment ruin an entire program for me." In this case it's an otherwise terrific Breakwater song: I can't get over how bad the segues around it were. Currently I'm trying to rationalize my summer "paradigm shift" by telling myself that I was trying to break free of the show's initial construct, "being about segues." And by "trying to rationalize" I really mean "lying about." I don't conceive of things that well anymore, if I ever did.
Since this program aired, 110 days ago now, I've gone on the air 20 times. I'm currently editing a broadcast from 47 days ago--7 shows ago.
"Somehow" I wound up doing eight programs in October, and I have been telling myself that in this month they started being good again. I'm not yet convinced! "Don't Stay Out Late" has an appalling lyric and I shouldn't have played it. This transmission, while too good to have been the low point, was probably the breaking point. After this I would turn back to Old Methods. That's a story for next time.

It's 4 a.m. and I have woken up from a bad dream about one of my old jobs. I still have them, but at least if I am dreaming I am sleeping, I guess. It must be my destiny to be four months in the past, in both my conscious and unconscious lives.
Since this program aired, 114 days ago now, I've gone on the air 21 times. I'm currently editing a broadcast from 47 days ago--7 shows ago.
Lady Catharsis joined me on this particular broadcast, and it was good--meaning I didn't get myself into too much trouble--but we had to stick to my repertoire in order for things to work out. I guess you could say I cheated, although I'm not competing against anyone or anything but some undefined "ideal" program. It all caught up with me at the end when I announced a tune by "Feta Coolie" and then "Feta Cootie." I probably needed more sleep then, too.

Can't Be Trusted 'Cause You're Living in the Past: Transmission 485, 2019 October 2

Saturday Jan 25, 2020
Yeah, so it's a rainy, miserable Saturday night and I'm trying to write a blurb about two hours I spent on the radio four months ago. How is your weekend going? I'm on kind of a self-flagellation binge so I thought I would tell you how I'm doing w/r/t getting this here podcast site caught up with the present.
Since this program aired, 115 days ago now, I've done 22 additional ones. I'm currently editing a program from 45 days ago--7 shows ago. I seem to remember saying during one of these shows--I can barely tell them apart--"we might just always be four months behind," and that is feeling like an accurate prediction. Thanks for your patience, by the way!
Honestly, this particular transmission did not get so crazy until after Public Enemy, though post-production magic may obscure that (you're welcome). I'm having to accept that being "about segues" may be part of this show's past but not its future, and I'm realizing that the thing I used to do back in the olden days, that is, repeating content that I knew "worked" in the segue context, made a kind of sense. But I also have a vague feeling that better days are ahead for this here program, so it's kind of a liminal space. Comforting thoughts in this not-actually-restful time.

Thursday Jan 23, 2020
I know these vaguely program-related recollections mark a lot of endings. But I can't conceive of this one in any other way--it had been my final day at the two jobs I'd been cobbling together into a "professional" life for the past several years, and which were destroying me with logarithmically increasing quickness. Not really having a library of "freedom tunes" or "escape tunes" I went with the usual, which at this point in history was...I don't know what. Shockingly, we got the usual late-summer results.
At one point I promised that we would get a good segue before the end of the evening. Maybe I delivered, but going from Tony Allen into Rose was definitely not it. Maybe I don't deliver everything that I promise. So it goes. The world doesn't give me everything it promises, and I don't owe the world more than it gives me. I am resolute about that.

It's Guy (me) again, perhaps too soon. As in radio, so it is in life. There is too much content. No one knows where it comes from. We are, perhaps, bored on the air. And on the phone. And on the couch. And in the driver's seat. And so on.
For me it is back to the frozen North. Perhaps I'll be missed. Perhaps I'll come back. Surely there are other adventures, for all of us. I leave you with a diversion that at least does not suffer from the previous one's technical difficulties. May you savor it.

Another week, another realization that last week's transmission was a false dawn. I spent late summer (and surely some of early fall) thinking I'd found the bottom, but I will surprise you with how low I can go. My all-too-comprehensible agenda rolls on, flattening all indicators of quality. But I'm determined to share everything here, so share this I will. I don't know, it's probably worth hearing, once, just to say you did?
Specifically, from the notes: I screwed up the transition to Carlton and the Shoes; my levels were all over the place; I seemed to hit a stride for a while but then "had to play" Ivan Black right after Ike and Tina. In my defense, the show gets fairly good after that point, but in the first hour nothing makes sense to me and I wonder if it ever did. Look, whomst among us has never made, or been, a conceptual mess? Really? None of you? Ok, never mind.

Guy LeBatard here (or there, then.) Another opportunity for broadcast adventure had arisen, so I seized it. Sadly, there is nothing remarkable about this program except for the near-complete failure of the station's equipment. It must be a sign of our age that "duress" stands in for "excitement," but we can't do anything about our age. Or can we?
Did you know that a million people are striking in the streets of Paris? Did you know that 250 million workers have walked off the job in India? Les soixante-huitards live on. In the form of other people, 52 years later, but we take what we can. Settling is also a sign of the age.

I never know quite what to do on this most sacred of American days. The only musical take I have on it is my feeling that we should never have abandoned "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" during the 7th-inning stretch. (Is there any more positive sign that the terrorists have won?) I'm fairly certain that every time (!) I have wound up with a program on September 11 I have just plowed ahead with my "regular" agenda, whatever that was at the time. What is that? Churchillian?
Anyway on this day I had taken a new job and escaped two bad ones. Yay, me! I even got to announce my departure during a "department meeting" that I had been dreading (and which had become dreadful for all the reasons I'd feared). Every worker's dream!
So I had some bad energy to release. Not sure what "Expensive Shit" had to do with any of this, but there it is, in the playlist all the same. I also don't know why I went with a solid block of English reggae at the top of the program. Reaching back to earlier times, I guess, when maybe I felt more free? Was that my true energy on this day? So friendly was the universe at this moment that even I think this program was good.

As I listen back to these episodes I realize that my hiatus should have been longer. Looking at my notes I see the repetition of several key phrases, such as "didn't make sense," "ill-conceived," "wasn't great," "for reasons unknown," and so on. Back in the summer I decided on an agenda--and I'm still committed to it!--but I was pursuing it so relentlessly that I was trampling on such time-honored values as "currency" and "competence." And on nights like this, I was even stealing extra airtime (or filling in for under-the-weather colleagues, take your pick) to do it!
This is probably not profound advice and I probably heard it from someone I don't even respect much, but knowing how you're going to begin and end a program is key. "Sutra" is the best kind of opening for me. And "Insight?" Maybe "not great," as someone is fond of saying, but it got me out the door, as Okada did on the last outing. What about the middle? Maybe if you sift through it you'll find some special moments--I think the best song of 2019 is in there, somewhere!

We are revisiting a period where I must have made it my mission to reach Episode 500 before year's end. (I succeeded!) If anything, this program is about processing the past, through the present, and these next couple dozen entries will endeavor to do that. This program was the first after (another) three-week hiatus, this one more or less voluntary as I finally lost my mind somewhere in mid-August and decided that I had to change jobs and change houses at the same time, and that I had no time for anything else (I was pretty much right about this.)
This transmission did little to work through these feelings, though it did continue my relentless and impulsive new agenda. I tried to mix the old with the new, to varying degrees of technical and conceptual. The first 45 minutes or so had me thinking that this program was somewhat special. I was wrong about this. Following Hugh Mane with Jimi Hendrix was not great. Then again, the "crazy" set was not that crazy. People tell me that my perception is off, so maybe I am not a reliable narrator. With this in mind, I think there may be some post-production magic on the Isaac Hayes segue, but it's too long ago to remember. I'm fairly sure that the D.K. transition was abrupt, but I didn't know how else to get to Okada, which was the whole point. Another episode in the bag, and we survived it.
