Here is a show that will make you wonder if it's past time I stopped playing vinyl records. I think I curate the show pretty well--Last of the Garage Punk Unknowns Volume 2 (which helps give the lie to Volume 1's title) is a great collection, but whether I can remember to fade down the turntable channel before the next track begins to play is basically a coin flip. That's not even a passing grade. Also, I was off by a week on Michael Franti's birthday, which will teach me not to look ahead.
Pre- and post-milestone episode I've been thinking about the big picture. (1) Are things different now than in the beginning? Yes--listening to some programs from 2 years ago or so, as I did recently, I got all wistful. Those shows were very nocturnal, and I don't know how well I'm achieving that right now. I found myself missing some bands that seem to have gone inactive, wondering whether they've been replaced by bands as good. I'm not sure about the host of those earlier programs, though. I think "bed music" turned out to be a good idea after all, and less pedantry is always welcome. Isn't it? (2) If the answer to (1) is "yes," and it is, when did things change? It would have to be around the time I became "management," which was never the goal. A graceful retreat, however it might be achieved, has been on my mind a lot lately. This is a human experiment with wild unpredictable swings between success and failure. I have taken to cc-ing someone on all my radio emails just to keep my worst tendencies in check. (3) How about that search for the "unbroken younger self"--how is that going? I begin to think that it was always misguided. I was never unbroken. Maybe it is "always now," as Section 25 would say. Lots of work still to do, I guess.
You know who else I have been listening to, though, and who raises no doubts whatsoever? Cap'n Halcyon. That guy is really good.
