Live in the Light and Breathe the Noise: Transmission 383, 2017 December 13
Friday Dec 22, 2017

I was angry on this night, because a listener had made a request in an obnoxious way. "I like what I'm hearing," the caller said, "but this would kick it up a notch." (Who uses Chef Emeril catchphrases in 2017, you were probably wondering. This person.) Like, was it impossible to just ask for a song without intimating that it would make my program better? Requests are already problematic enough in this day and age. There's a tension between everything already being on the internet (as the requested tune was) and our particular status as a listener-supported station. We shouldn't have to be anyone's jukebox, but we more or less must. There is the odd person every now and then who doesn't have internet, but how big a financial backer is such a person going to be?
Anyway I won't poison your experience any further by telling you which song it was that I didn't plan on playing when the evening began. You'll have to figure that out on your own.

Snoring Dark Frequencies into the Night: Transmission 382, 2017 December 6
Tuesday Dec 12, 2017
Tuesday Dec 12, 2017
Please find attached the first December program of the year. It begins well! They all seem to begin well. In my previous life in the theatre, I always wanted to know that I was "in good hands" at the start of a performance. If I felt that way, I could forgive whatever mistakes and weirdness might happen later. If I didn't feel that way I would never feel comfortable. I hope this program makes you feel comfortable, at least at first.
Are there mistakes and weirdnesses here? I'm sorry, is this your first time visiting the podcast site? We start off with Peter Buck, the evening's featured artist, dropping a metric ton of f-bombs in his first song. It got me thinking--there was a time, not too long ago, when I would have felt rebellious playing such a tune. Now--my parents are listening (corollary--will I ever grow up?), I'm tired and sad, and language only seems to free the wrong people in this time.
Happy holidays!

To Those Who Offend You, Show Mercy: Transmission 381, 2017 November 29
Sunday Dec 10, 2017
Sunday Dec 10, 2017
Here is the first post-Thanksgiving program, and therefore the first program of our sixth year on the air. It continues to blow my mind that they let me keep doing this. Back in 2012 I thought maybe I would get ten programs out of my WRFI experience if I didn't offend anybody. That I remain fixated on this--"wow, unbelievable"--and don't just accept it and move forward is what my therapist would call a "frozen shutdown response." I am working on it, I promise.
Ok, I am amused that right off the bat I called the Fort Romeau tune "EMO II." I don't care what anyone thinks. That is accurate. Synths and drum machines from "that time" are emotional. I am realizing that music is a time machine and there is an increasing list of rides I don't want to take. Fort Romeau--if you're reading--I enjoyoed your track!
Do your best this week not to freeze or shut down.

Looking back at this, the final program of our fifth year, I'm feeling better than I did the last time out. It's a slight improvement, but improvement matters! Fitting, isn't it, that this is a fill-in program, as there's no possible way we could have averaged 76 programs a year without them?! And here I was thinking that 2017 had been a light year in terms of this. As always, my perception is a bit off.
Typically, I can't wrap my mind around some of these segues. How could I have thought these would work? For every "Big Dream from a Small Room" into "Fool Babe" (not sure how that one made it into the program but there it is), there's an Akkord into The Smiths (not sure how much longer I can indulge my Morrissey fixation publicly). There is, additionally, at least one point where I begin to play a song for the second time on the night. But I am pretty sure it is a good song, and quality matters.

Lately I have been thinking a good deal about negativity--what its uses might be, what it says about the bearer, what it does to the soul. Depression has such a strong hold on me these days! But this is somewhat true of all days, my dear Bombasticons. Sometimes I even doubt that this program nourishes me, though I can't imagine life without it. And I might have to--a "little bird" tells me that our recent fundraiser generated some 20% of the station's annual budget. Should I rue the missing 80% or take delight that people love us enough to give what they gave? Should I borrow future grief over programs that won't air or should I be grateful that I have done nearly 400 of these?
Musical notes: that Durutti record, though legendary, arrived in awful shape for a new record--so much for ambivalence about negativity! But seriously, what is wrong with vinyl these days? I have had a couple of similar experiences recently. Segues--who gives a toss? In this program they are fairly bad, and hopefully the songs compensate for that.

If fundraising programs mark the beginning of a programming year, may I welcome you to the first "normal" program of the new year. Our form was mostly good on this night, save for playing the wrong Vic Chesnutt track. We are at the point in our lives where we realize we are simply never going to improve at certain things. If only this realization came with a feeling of calm!.
In hindsight, this night was an observance, though no appropriate planning went into it. Some years ago, November 8 marked the final night of a previous life. You might call it "another brown world!" Anyway, that's gone. What remains is the shallow-affect person who runs this corner of the broadcasting world. At least he has decent taste.

Friday Nov 17, 2017
Welcome to Festival of Evidence v4.0! It has been two years since we did this--my time slot during last year's fundraiser coincided with an awful presidential debate (if that is not a redundancy)--and it is definitely worth the wait. The entire Bombast crew is here, with fundraising specialist Godfrey on "the other side of the partition," and a good time is had by all. We even managed to make some money on this night.
Notes: it still embarrasses me, two and a half weeks later, that I accidentally played Siouxsie twice. I did manage to explain "Milkshake Duck" to Godfrey but we have not gotten around to explaining "family values" or "Stranger Things" to Junior, which is probably for the best. I may have gotten my recollection of John Peel's death wrong in my tiresome anecdote. That would not surprise me at all. I don't remember who was actually on the air the night he died. I should really stop telling stories, or at least make some new ones.

Tuesday Oct 31, 2017
This broadcast is full of mistakes, some staged and some spontaneous. It is true, what I say about the Internet reminding me that October 25 is the date on which John Peel died; also true is my implication that "planning" to play a John Peel session on this night was a happy accident. But it's all downhill from there. "30 years ago"--not 13? And no correction? Ugh. "4 A's AT Maida Vale?" How long have I owned this record? Additional miscues can be found on the tape. I won't go on about this.
Last time out I complained about the absence (or tardiness, if you're feeling generous) of autumn. Now, it's here with a vengeance--rain, flooding, winds, slippery decaying leaves stuck to everything. And cyclical death is in the air. Station management is sending messages of doom and panic at every opportunity. Who knows how dire things really are, or how long the endgame might take to unfold. Watch and see if things get more chestnutty around here--that will be a sign.

Where People Feel No Anguish and Need No Hate: Transmission 375, 2017 October 18
Tuesday Oct 24, 2017
Tuesday Oct 24, 2017
Please find attached a program that is dark and nocturnal--they are not the same thing, but both qualities are here. And herein I burn through my last remaining piece of Physical Evidence having to do with A Certain Ratio. Surely there are more, in the world. I just don't happen to own any of them. Were you under the impression that this program was about anything other than my collection, my taste, me? You have my deepest apologies.
Autumn hasn't been very autumnal around here. Usually at this time of year I am quite preoccupied with some act of self-sabotage, but for various reasons--is it weather? Or my new meds?--that doesn't seem to be happening. IT IS VERY DISORIENTING. I actually found myself feeling good about this program, in real time. And it is indeed good, "me-ness" be damned.

Now is the time to listen to us, as we are on a good run. I exude confidence, or whatever comes closest to it on my emotional palette, when I suggest that Mathew Johnson might compensate for an abandoned Chaka Khan track. With apologies to Mathew Johnson, I was mistaken about this--what could compensate?--but this program is close to the dream. I even got--and fulfilled!--a request from someone, dare I say, outside the ill-defined demographic. I initially thought they were asking for something called "Big Far," which really should exist, but Big Star will do nicely (though I must say, despite knowing what the lyrics of "For You" say, Third seems to me a record for December, not October).
"Lucid Dreaming"--it's happening.
