Here is my most recent "fill-in" program and the last one for the foreseeable future. (Just watch--tomorrow night someone will have an emergency and there I--THE HERO--will be.) It was predictable, but nonetheless worthy of remark, that Danny and I were both subbing for female DJs who had gone down to Washington DC to do some actual work. I must have done a good job--I managed to convince one (admittedly baked) caller that I was DJ Penelope. No doubt the whole "not talking" thing that I have lately pushed to extremes must have helped, but in the spirit of giving myself credit, I would like to think it was the music too.
This was an "overflow" program, consisting of a bunch of things that I hadn't managed to fit in over the course of the last year or so. Naturally I forced them to co-habitate and, occasionally, the segues were not terrible. I suppose more than a few of these were things I'd meant to play the night I opted out of radio on account of hitting my head. Dear god, how long ago was that, and was it where my troubles began? At any rate, I was true to my word, I think: this program may divert you but it will teach you nothing.

There have been many such programs lately, but here is yet another recording from a genre that could be termed "final shows from historical eras now passed." I tell you what, I "went out" with a bang. This is one for the pantheon. And we didn't even need "The Listening Parlour" or "Physical Evidence" to make it happen! You will be very satisfied with this mixtape or I will pay back every penny you spent on it.
A time capsule, but not evergreen: we do find ourselves reading promo copy for a "make your voice heard" feature related to the (then-) impending inauguration. Very quaint, this gestaltly therapy of speaking "truth" to power. I may regret not having done more of this in my life, but I also have my doubts. Imagining you have some degree of control and influence: must (have) be(en) nice. Pretty sure I will die wondering what that is like.
But enough ranting. A new era dawns, and there are at least four more programs in it!

[GUEST POST]
Hello, listeners and readers of Bombast. I am Captain Halcyon, back with another program from last summer. These morning departures are uncommonly good. This particular broadcast went so well that I decided to play songs on a regular basis last fall (albeit in the afternoon, sadly). I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
These recordings are intended to "tide you over." I have been gone for a while. But I am coming back soon. Sunset is getting later every day. Flight season approaches.

From full-featured to featureless goes our program this time out. This is not to say that it is soup--this broadcast strikes me as more of a grab bag of sounds. Admittedly, my review of this mixtape has been a bit unfocused--busy with work, and preoccupied by some emotional crisis or other, I didn't get a good pass of the first hour. The second does contain one truly sublime moment, the passage going from Juan Atkins through PAAR. That is the good stuff, which is not to say that it isn't all good stuff.
I was a bit short on words during this outing. It's just been the case with me lately. Nothing would please me more than to tell you it comes from a time of relative calm--but I am not destined for pleasure. I also clam up in times of anxiety and dread, which this certainly is for many of us, though I have my own reasons
Oh, I thought of one more positive thing--there's some Tross on this mixtape. That is definitely worth hearing once or twice.

Flying solo again on this outing, I took care of some unfinished business. Since xmas is technically a twelve-day observance--more on this momentarily*--I empty this year's quiver of holiday tunes. Five weeks after the fact, it doesn't sound clever; still, I don't regret it. More importantly, we deliver a "full-featured program," the first for some time, with a pertinent track from Lady C and A Certain Ratio occupying the prestigious "Physical Evidence" chair. This, too, was a belated seasonal observance. As I say, I would have liked to do this on the Winter Solstice (because you can't always play Coil; even I can't), but "things happened." The Old & The New is probably not a solstice record for you, but it is for me, a souvenir from a trip to Tower Records in Los Angeles during an ill-fated vacation, the guilt and shame of which I still carry. "Sounds Like Something Dirty," indeed. (In case you didn't know, this archive is also my diary, so deal.)
*I insist on stretching out the yuletide forever, by the way, on account of the recurring childhood trauma of watching my next-door neighbors throw their Christmas tree into the street, like clockwork, every December 26. That seemed wrong to young, Catholic Master Catharsis, as it does to older, lapsed Kid Catharsis. Apologies if I have told this story before--one only has so many to tell.

Night Is Warm and the Stars Are Bright: Transmission 316, 2016 December 31
Friday Feb 03, 2017
Friday Feb 03, 2017
Since we all had a free night, and the last night of the "calendar year" is a useless observance, the entire Catharsis Family Circus rolled into the WRFI studios. It was the first time we had done this in a while, so for those who don't live with her every day, Junior's performance on this episode is something of a...revelation, I daresay. I would be happy to listen to her program, if she had one, but I will also settle for her being a frequent guest on my program and deflating my pretensions (although considering Their Satanic Majesties Request a "masterpiece" is not a pretension). Elsewhere, Lady Catharsis shares a half-dozen "depressing" tunes with us, I completely botch a segue from Wanda Jackson to Thee Michelle Gun Elephant (I swear that one should have worked), and I play THE WRONG JUSTIFIED ANCIENTS OF MU-MU TRACK at the end of the program (it was supposed to be "Burn the Bastards").
I'm sure that, with all its shortcomings (at least I see them that way), this program will be a favorite for you listeners. More voices, actual debate, anyone in the studio besides me, etc. I know how these things work. So I guess it was good to close up 2016--a godawful year!--with a "good" show. We actually didn't do "that much" radio in 2016, "only" 60 programs, thanks to some wise policy (don't quote me on that) from management and my own hypering down. Here's to even fewer--and better--programs in 2017!

A quick turnaround between the prior show and this one, but that is how things work sometimes in this fast-paced life I lead. Nominally this was my "regular," Wednesday-night program and should have been "superior" to the hullabaloo on Monday the 26th, but it is tough to tell. I was certainly having a week. I managed to get myself professionally handcuffed and about ten different kinds of depressed while theoretically "on vacation." Let no one tell you I don't do amazing things.
I can say with some confidence that this seems to be "a program of two halves," perhaps fitting for what I like to think of as a mixtape. There is a brooding, downtempo first-half and a lurching, menacing, rocking second half. So were this a literal trail mix and not a metaphorical one, it could use some shaking. But my life has entered an "inefficient and inaccurate" phase. The first draft of just about everything I do needs serious revision, and sometimes there just isn't a second draft.

Halcyon here, with an irregularly regular checkin. I am probably an ill-fitting substitute for Radio Days, but from time to time I fill in for that crew. This is one such time, from last summer. Ithaca is normally quite calm on a Saturday morning, even in the late morning; however, if I recall correctly, this was a "festival" weekend. I needed to create my own "quiet space," and this was it.
Nevertheless, I see that I had re-entered the world of "long" playlists and short songs, which is perhaps not a good development. And it's a bit "mainstream" too, as some local teen is wont to say. I cannot always be sublime. There's always "Matthewdavid," whoever he is. His stuff is pretty "out there," or "in there," whichever.

It is amazing to think that the xmas holidays were a mere five weeks ago. Seems more like five lifetimes. We should be grateful to have survived them all! Anyway, enough romance and nostalgia still attach themselves to the yuletide that I jump at the chance to do radio around this time, so here I am, "sitting in," as usual. I still have not managed to do a program on the 24th, and probably won't, ever, but I guess having Lady C in my life is a decent trade-off.
Funnily enough, I don't really manage to make the "festive" thing happen on this night. It would come soon enough--as I said earlier, I am just behind with a lot of things this year. (And not to say that Thee Headcoats and Ramleh aren't festive in their own ways). I seem happy enough to do what I am doing, but who is to say? It was generations ago.

Monday Jan 30, 2017
40 days in the past, there were two hours on a Wednesday evening that we shared together. Or maybe we didn't, and now's your chance--except I'm probably doing something else at the moment, so find a friend and share this with them. This Solstice program was capably executed, technically, anyway, though maybe not in terms of content. James Brown made it into the mix with one of the most dreary (although, this year, strangely appropriate) xmas tunes you're likely to hear. And there was a chestnut, the Pixies in this case, dealing with some non-specific holiday or other.
Now, I had meant to don a sonic hair-shirt on this night and channel the memory of past transgressions through the medium of A Certain Ratio. But that didn't happen, because, as James says, "I waited a little too long" to get things together. This is where all my troubles seem to begin! So instead we get this strange roller-coaster of a show that seems to make sense for about the first hour and then again at the very end, but loses its shape in the middle--another metaphor for just about everything I do. The best that can be said is that I took the Chameleons' advice. So should you.
