Our station's computer needed some TLC on a Saturday night--I don't know how that phrase turned out, but that's about as succinctly as I could render it. As usual, when I have to do some such thing, I like to do a show as well, so here is my gift to the world. The newly-reissued [on CD, of all things--how retro!] Jam Science by Shriekback is our "Physical Evidence"--I brought in my vinyl copy of an album which, for years, topped my "wish it were on CD" list. Thank you, Ironic Fairies of Time, for making this happen, I guess?
At the moment of writing, I have logged 90 programs since the one-year anniversary of this show last November. That is a lot of programs, you guys. Assuming a one-show-per-week schedule, it means that I'd do nearly 40 shows a year if I adopted the "pop-up only" idea I had a few months ago [co-program director Nicholas talked me down from that ledge]. It does make one think existentially. What am I doing, hanging out at the station by myself on a Saturday night? "You know how I feel about it," says Lady Catharsis, "but it is nice to see a grown man smile." I totally agree! If only we could find a grown man somewhere around here.
In other, more personal news, I'm a little upset. A little bird tells me that according to one person at the station I am one of three "white guys who squash everyone's good ideas." In fairness, this person was apparently hammered while sharing this opinion, and we all know how alcohol makes you say a bunch of things you've never actually thought. I don't know where to start with that except to point out that until roused by anger I don't have the energy to squash much of anything. But as it is my best, most creative energy, I suggest you strap in for a run of good programs. This could fuel me for a while.
Also, as I was writing this, I just received a phone call from a MUSICAL LUMINARY, so big things are in the offing, which is smile-worthy no matter how mature you are.

Here is a regular Tuesday night "alpha" program--I seem to be doing only these of late, and it is kind of nice. Perhaps I am settling into DJ middle age. The Cramps provide our "physical evidence" tonight, which is most definitely a positive. Nevertheless, I am the constant, and I am who I am. Things do not always go as planned. I got some nice kudos on the night, but I told the truth at the beginning of this program. I was not with it. I had not eaten. Life had intervened.
How so, you (didn't) ask? I'd been to the gym beforehand. Yes, I am one of those people. Before you judge, I frequent a tragically ludicrous gym where things like this happen. (That's not me in the vid, by the way, but whatevs.) I need my serotonin because I suffer from depression, you see, and prescription meds don't work. Am I a health nut? No. Do I refrain from self-destructive eating and drinking habits? Hell and no. AAR we've got some dodgy cardio machines there, and dodgy people responsible for maintaining those machines. Apparently $10/mo doesn't get you first-class gear or service! I had to try four different machines before finding one that would actually display my heart rate instead of telling me I didn't have one. That cost me time, you see, and no time means no sandwich. Maybe I should have prepared better, given myself more time, packed some food, you are thinking? STFU you are not my mother. [Sorry, Mom.] [She reads this, you see.]
Anyway when I have expended a lot of energy and don't put any back in, I think segues are good when they aren't, I mis-cue things, I get European countries confused, and I hold conversations with people who cannot properly be heard. Sadly we are not BBC1 and I am not John Peel and I can't get on mic, say "I'm hungry" and have some rando bring me a biryani. That is just not happening. So we're all stuck with this.

Many things could have gone better on this outing. In my ongoing quest to live out this show's purpose I tried doing something I used to do all the time, doing all the voice-overs with "bed music." That will, I hope, get better. We had some technical problems, particularly ill-timed given the solemnity of the night. But: the airplay computer was only playing out of the left channel, which is obvious for some of the goofy "traffic" spots early on; with a lot of "coaxing" I managed to get it stereo, though that made the first few Dub Syndicate tracks an adventure in listening. I still don't know if that problem is fully solved, but hey, WRFI has a general manager now, so for once I don't have to feel like it's my problem.
About Dub Syndicate: fucking hell. I am just so sad. I will let other people deliver eulogies; I wrote some words about my history with Dub Syndicate a while ago, when I brilliantly put Style Scott in the Hall of Legends without interviewing him. "I'll get to it later," I probably told myself. There is no later. Anyway, someone smarter than I am got a pretty good interview here.
Oh, and then Mark Bell of LFO had to go and die, too. Quite a week! Everyone reading this, be well. I mean it.

I was a bit sad on this occasion, having read that Morrissey has been fighting cancer. I have already said what I have to say about The Smiths, so no need to do anything here but link to it, in case it matters to anyone. (Doubtful.) But hey, on the bright side, they have been nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, that "Cracker Barrel of cultural shrines," which has to be a cheerful prospect. Imagine Morrissey catching up, at long last, with Andrew Rourke and Mike Joyce at the induction ceremony. That will be the opposite of awkward! How fortune's wheel spins and spins!
With the Mariano DC record, this evening's "Physical Evidence," I did something that Young Me would have done. I slapped some spoken word goodness on top of those beats. To varying degrees I think it worked, as long as you are tolerant of wide variance.

"It's always a little bit ragged," I remark at one point during this program, because honesty is my policy. Whether "it" is a regularly-scheduled BOMBAST or an emergency BOMBAST, as this one was, doesn't seem to matter. I assume you're tired of hearing me write off bad segues or accidentally-pushed buttons as part of the program's charm, but that is a mantra of mine and I don't care.
Also, I don't care what anyone else thinks of the Durutti Column. I won't back off my statement that Vini Reilly's music is "one of human civilization's finest achievements." It is and to argue it is a waste of time. Amazingly, when we inaugurated this "Physical Evidence" thing I wondered whether we'd ever hear from the DC again, and here we are not too much later with a wonderful collection of tunes. AUTUMNAL tunes, about which I will also brook no debate.

What was meant to be a regular "alpha" program came off more like an "emergency" or "overflow" program, not that it wasn't ever thus. At one point I might have planned a "Physical Evidence" installment but that fell apart, because of life, let's say. Still, this is a good selection, and it is our first airing of Daisuke Tanabe and Rival Consoles, who have made some nice records.
Technical note: I got so distracted chatting with the (accidentally) solo Steph that I forgot to plug in my recorder until midway through the Fall song, so the first few minutes of this audio file are retrieved from this automatic recording software we have on one of our station computers. I won't name it because I am compelled to point out that it's lousy, with brittle sound and a ridiculous DC offset. I'm an amateur waveform surgeon at best. I did what I could.

Here is a detour from regular programming, apparently. Every now and then some offhand remark will throw me off balance for an unconscionably long stretch, and about a month ago Slade the Engineer, hearing me cue a T. Rex track, remarked that "this is a happy song for your show." Really? Anyway I decided to use this fill-in program to play nothing but "happy" tunes, whatever that means. I'm still not sure. I shouldn't take these things to heart when they come from someone who likes jazz, so I guess it's my issue.
About 15 years ago I went through my music collection and culled all the pieces that I thought were "too depressing" ("Gothic crap," as I think I termed it then). I jettisoned about a third of my collection this way. I thought only the happy stuff was left. But in assembling this program, I realized just how rare thoroughly happy music is, and I'm doubtful that I managed to play any of it. It seems I have a lot of work to do.
You know what it is about "happy" music? It's brief, so if you try to play two straight hours of it, it makes you frantic. It's difficult to make proper segues happen. It doesn't have much in the way of atmosphere or quiet margins. It begins and ends abruptly. Its "musicality" is very traditional and doesn't have much to do with sound per se. No wonder it's not my thing!
The Boyoyo Boys are fantastic, though. They deserve better than the admiration of Paul Simon, or proximity to anything David Lowery's done.

Dear listeners! Here is a regular Tuesday night program, one which aired a "mere" ten days ago. I told you the floodgates would open. Anyhow, this being another "birthday observance," Danielle Dax provides the Physical Evidence, her second time doing so. Good times were had.
Our equipment in the studio is showing signs of its age and use, so one of our cd players is basically in the terminal stage. It made my John Coltrane disc sound like a piece of vinyl, which is to say that at least the disc played, which not all of them do. This has secondary effects, such as adventures in cueing (not that these wouldn't happen anyway, but when I have an excuse I'ma use it) such as what you hear while Tinariwen is playing. Life's rich pageant marches on.

It was the 21st night of September, so I had things to do, whether they "fit" the program or not. This show suffered from an embarrassment of riches. It was "listening party" day for the [as-yet] unreleased [in the United States] Aphex Twin record, and Rudy had just sent me his mix of a new Veldt track. Dream-pop and electro whatever it is that Richard James does? YES PLEASE.
Follies: it was not really the equinox, yet. Could I start getting memos about this? They would help. Also, I've been so traumatized by song titles on WARP records that, PTSD-style, I have come to regard totally pronounceable Aphex Twin track names as hieroglyphics. I'll seek professional help as soon as I can set up a GoFundMe campaign to pay for it.

An unusually competent show, less than 24 hours after the last foray. Everything's coming up Milhouse! Wire provided the "Physical Evidence" on what was Colin Newman's birthday. I suppose I did get the recording dates confused, so not a fully competent program, but whatever. I might also have played "Crazy About Love," but I'm "saving" that one, I guess, and Lee Gamble sounded really nice.
Maybe someday I will stop being a WATB and pick up that other piece of "Physical Evidence" by My Bloody Valentine. It is just sitting there. [sigh] Probably not any time soon, knowing me.
