Greatness in Me, You Can’t Make Me Feel Less: Transmission 489, 2019 October 16

portuguese-man-of-war.jpg"This is surely not rock bottom," my notes read (even my notes are pretentious), "but felt like cheating somehow, and also a program with an old agenda." Well, I did return to some very recent spins, trying to--what? correct mistakes? erase moral debts? Listening back the agenda doesn't seem that old, but I'm definitely in no position to assess that. I think the big mistake of the summer was that I tried living in the moment, but for reasons beyond my control (at least that's what I'm telling myself!) "the moment" was a kind of terrible I wasn't prepared for.

But who(m)(st) are we kidding? I make mistakes every summer.

Since this program was broadcast, 106 days ago now, I've gone on the air 19 times. I'm currently editing a sound file from 37 days ago--6 shows ago.

(One of the problems with the "chronicling and specifying my slothfulness" is that the Wednesdays keep coming, you see, and so do the radio appearances. Also, I've not been mentioning my listening habits, mostly at the gym--I just finished listening to a transmission from 71 days ago. So that's four different times I'm inhabiting at once--the past I'm trying to write about, the past I'm listening to, the past I'm editing (!), and the present I'm trying to stay afloat in. How is your existence going, friend?)

The current churn is bringing to mind some existential questions about this whole radio thing. I don't know at the moment why I do it but I know I have to. And it's not even a job! There's not even a Patreon associated with this thing (I'm either too busy or too lazy to get that together).

Will it feel better if my "four temporal planes" collapse into one? Will the questions disappear, or maybe even be answered? Stay tuned to this gripping series.

Despite All My Rage, We Still in a Daze: Transmission 488, 2019 October 13

nnyz.jpgHere we are again. I am scrambling to write something in the pre-dawn hours, and you are probably asleep and oblivious. You have no idea how I envy you! Last night I dreamed that I was being bullied; waking up from this at 1 a.m., I decided to go back to bed, only to find myself in a classroom. I was the present version of myself, that is, not a teacher and not the teacher, but of course it was a theatre classroom and worst of all a dramatic literature classroom. "I haven't thought about Angels in America in ten years," I remember myself saying (it's true!), but I'm pretty sure that the text we were discussing, and which I had not read, was not Kushner's play--but we were behaving as though it was. I think I'd rather dream about being punched.

Since this program was broadcast, 107 days ago now, I've gone on the air 19 times. I'm currently editing a sound file from 41 days ago--6 shows ago.

A weak, incoherent idea is starting to form, and it's that existing in "multiple times" like this is maybe not good for my brain? I don't know.

Whatever. This Sunday-night fill-in occasion prompted me to try some pre-planning (seems weird) and to use the station's computers again. Guy was right--we are constantly under duress. You need to bring a Plan B and a Plan C. Maybe one day we'll have reliable equipment, but we have not acquired it in ~7 years of my doing radio here, and October 13 was not going to be the day either.

It's a shame because for the first hour or so the program is pretty good. Stupidly, when the distortion began I tried to ride it out because it actually sounded "good" during Kelman Duran and Carter Tutti Void. Felix made me reboot the computer--I don't think I've felt this way since one of the program directors at KDVS ordered me to apologize to my listeners for playing a certain Cure song! (Who was saying something about living in multiple times at once?) Apologies to Ivan Black for my use of his music to cover up technical difficulties. He deserves better. We all do. Sleep well.

Melt the House, Wake the World: Transmission 487, 2019 October 9

autism_mom.jpgThere's this thing I do called "letting one bad moment ruin an entire program for me." In this case it's an otherwise terrific Breakwater song: I can't get over how bad the segues around it were. Currently I'm trying to rationalize my summer "paradigm shift" by telling myself that I was trying to break free of the show's initial construct, "being about segues." And by "trying to rationalize" I really mean "lying about." I don't conceive of things that well anymore, if I ever did.

Since this program aired, 110 days ago now, I've gone on the air 20 times. I'm currently editing a broadcast from 47 days ago--7 shows ago.

"Somehow" I wound up doing eight programs in October, and I have been telling myself that in this month they started being good again. I'm not yet convinced! "Don't Stay Out Late" has an appalling lyric and I shouldn't have played it. This transmission, while too good to have been the low point, was probably the breaking point. After this I would turn back to Old Methods. That's a story for next time.

The Night Is Made of Rocks: Transmission 486, 2019 October 5

fela_lady.jpgIt's 4 a.m. and I have woken up from a bad dream about one of my old jobs. I still have them, but at least if I am dreaming I am sleeping, I guess. It must be my destiny to be four months in the past, in both my conscious and unconscious lives.

Since this program aired, 114 days ago now, I've gone on the air 21 times. I'm currently editing a broadcast from 47 days ago--7 shows ago.

Lady Catharsis joined me on this particular broadcast, and it was good--meaning I didn't get myself into too much trouble--but we had to stick to my repertoire in order for things to work out. I guess you could say I cheated, although I'm not competing against anyone or anything but some undefined "ideal" program. It all caught up with me at the end when I announced a tune by "Feta Coolie" and then "Feta Cootie." I probably needed more sleep then, too.

Can’t Be Trusted ‘Cause You’re Living in the Past: Transmission 485, 2019 October 2

sequoyah_murray_2.jpgYeah, so it's a rainy, miserable Saturday night and I'm trying to write a blurb about two hours I spent on the radio four months ago. How is your weekend going? I'm on kind of a self-flagellation binge so I thought I would tell you how I'm doing w/r/t getting this here podcast site caught up with the present.

Since this program aired, 115 days ago now, I've done 22 additional ones. I'm currently editing a program from 45 days ago--7 shows ago. I seem to remember saying during one of these shows--I can barely tell them apart--"we might just always be four months behind," and that is feeling like an accurate prediction. Thanks for your patience, by the way!

Honestly, this particular transmission did not get so crazy until after Public Enemy, though post-production magic may obscure that (you're welcome). I'm having to accept that being "about segues" may be part of this show's past but not its future, and I'm realizing that the thing I used to do back in the olden days, that is, repeating content that I knew "worked" in the segue context, made a kind of sense. But I also have a vague feeling that better days are ahead for this here program, so it's kind of a liminal space. Comforting thoughts in this not-actually-restful time.

When One Road Close, Another One Go Open: Transmission 484, 2019 September 25

haystack_mountain.jpegI know these vaguely program-related recollections mark a lot of endings. But I can't conceive of this one in any other way--it had been my final day at the two jobs I'd been cobbling together into a "professional" life for the past several years, and which were destroying me with logarithmically increasing quickness. Not really having a library of "freedom tunes" or "escape tunes" I went with the usual, which at this point in history was...I don't know what. Shockingly, we got the usual late-summer results.

At one point I promised that we would get a good segue before the end of the evening. Maybe I delivered, but going from Tony Allen into Rose was definitely not it. Maybe I don't deliver everything that I promise. So it goes. The world doesn't give me everything it promises, and I don't owe the world more than it gives me. I am resolute about that.

luke_hess_facette.jpg[GUEST POST]

It's Guy (me) again, perhaps too soon. As in radio, so it is in life. There is too much content. No one knows where it comes from. We are, perhaps, bored on the air. And on the phone. And on the couch. And in the driver's seat. And so on.

For me it is back to the frozen North. Perhaps I'll be missed. Perhaps I'll come back. Surely there are other adventures, for all of us. I leave you with a diversion that at least does not suffer from the previous one's technical difficulties. May you savor it.

If I Could Just Explain the Way My Mind Is: Transmission 483, 2019 September 18

fortnite-habit-kid-problem.jpgAnother week, another realization that last week's transmission was a false dawn. I spent late summer (and surely some of early fall) thinking I'd found the bottom, but I will surprise you with how low I can go. My all-too-comprehensible agenda rolls on, flattening all indicators of quality. But I'm determined to share everything here, so share this I will. I don't know, it's probably worth hearing, once, just to say you did?

Specifically, from the notes: I screwed up the transition to Carlton and the Shoes; my levels were all over the place; I seemed to hit a stride for a while but then "had to play" Ivan Black right after Ike and Tina. In my defense, the show gets fairly good after that point, but in the first hour nothing makes sense to me and I wonder if it ever did. Look, whomst among us has never made, or been, a conceptual mess? Really? None of you? Ok, never mind.

U_D_M Detour 38, 2019 September 14

u_d_m_2019sep14.jpg[GUEST POST]

Guy LeBatard here (or there, then.) Another opportunity for broadcast adventure had arisen, so I seized it. Sadly, there is nothing remarkable about this program except for the near-complete failure of the station's equipment. It must be a sign of our age that "duress" stands in for "excitement," but we can't do anything about our age. Or can we?

Did you know that a million people are striking in the streets of Paris? Did you know that 250 million workers have walked off the job in India? Les soixante-huitards live on. In the form of other people, 52 years later, but we take what we can. Settling is also a sign of the age.

From Childhood’s Hour I Have Not Been As Others Were: Transmission 482, 2019 September 11

karyyn.jpgI never know quite what to do on this most sacred of American days. The only musical take I have on it is my feeling that we should never have abandoned "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" during the 7th-inning stretch. (Is there any more positive sign that the terrorists have won?) I'm fairly certain that every time (!) I have wound up with a program on September 11 I have just plowed ahead with my "regular" agenda, whatever that was at the time. What is that? Churchillian?

Anyway on this day I had taken a new job and escaped two bad ones. Yay, me! I even got to announce my departure during a "department meeting" that I had been dreading (and which had become dreadful for all the reasons I'd feared). Every worker's dream!

So I had some bad energy to release. Not sure what "Expensive Shit" had to do with any of this, but there it is, in the playlist all the same. I also don't know why I went with a solid block of English reggae at the top of the program. Reaching back to earlier times, I guess, when maybe I felt more free? Was that my true energy on this day? So friendly was the universe at this moment that even I think this program was good.
