This program finds us back in the usual Wednesday night slot, "our special time together." I was already somewhat tired from the night before--like I said, I am too old--but emotionally amped, at least, because I would be playing a cherished record, about which more below. The show begins, though, with an embarrassing gaffe as neither Andrea or I can force the second tune--which is playing--to make a sound. I should be better than this. Apologies to Ant Orange, whoever you are. Anyway, in the interest of full disclosure, I have edited some of that silence out.
But let's talk about what we do hear. Bourbonese Qualk is a rough listen, with skips and pops aplenty, but that record has been loved. Even a perfect copy would be decidedly "lo-fi" and have its dynamics all over the place, but I think that's what its creators wanted. Why is it so dear? I feel like the home recording puts it squarely in the category of "you too can do this," and indeed it sounds in places like things Mr. D and I were trying to do back in the day. I think that, too, is intentional. I remember listening to this record a lot during a six-week period one summer when I was unemployed (how quaint that it felt like an endless stretch at the time).
Anyway, regardless of those considerations, you could do a lot worse than "Pipe Dreams," and god knows many people have done worse.

Every Fool Will See His Madness Crowned: Transmission 407, 2018 May 15
Monday Jun 04, 2018
Monday Jun 04, 2018
Here is a rarity: an "unscheduled" appearance of the program. It is strange to think of it as an unusual thing (as we shall see), but "it is what it is." It was Andrew Eldritch's birthday, something I'd meant to observe three years ago (I think) but my chance was too late in the day: 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. I think of that as the day I decided I was "too old." (One could think of it as the day I officially became a flake, but that was a long time ago.) In 2018, we're probably past the point of anyone's caring, least of all Mr. Eldritch himself, but I don't like to leave business unfinished, so here we are. I may have been in a bit of a mood, but I think I was enjoying myself, and the segues aren't too bad. I had meant to play Spacemen 3 at the end of it all--I wasn't "giving up"--but I was bad at math on this night, so we get an excerpt.
This program's being the first time in five months that I had made a substitute appearance does not stop my past from being a burden. Back when I lived and breathed WRFI (almost literally!) I would jump at the chance, almost any chance, to do radio. We were desperate for programming in the old days, and the station always seemed on the brink of going off-air for whatever reason. If I remember correctly there was one year when I made 91 appearances! Ye gods. Anyway, between getting older, getting busier, learning my limitations, deciding on further limitations, and so on, I've been much better at limiting myself to my allotted airtime--except, I guess, for that brief, wonderful period last year when Catharsis Junior wanted to do radio with me on the regular. Anyway, people think I am still like my old self! At a meeting recently, when we were doing introductions, I said that I do radio on Wednesday nights, and a colleague added "and on demand, apparently." Shots fired! DJ Andrea, who is going on "indefinite hiatus" from the Free Pile, says that she will take sub shifts from time to time, "if you don't take them all." OUCH. I guess it is my destiny, in this and other ways, not to escape my past. But this night was worth it.
I wonder what I "live and breathe" now? That is a mystery.

Last time out, I mentioned that I normally listen to these mixtapes at the gym. As I write this, I am calling that practice into question. My therapist, you see, has told me that she thinks that my exercise is "proxy relief from total self-hatred." ("Also," she says, "that would be a GREAT album title." I'm inclined to agree on both counts.)
Let's just assume for a moment that it's true. In that case, listening to a good mixtape serves the purpose and listening to a bad mixtape probably mitigates the effect. So either I need to improve to the point where I am only ever doing good shows--5 years in, it doesn't seem likely--or, just to be safe, I need to find some other exercise jams. OR maybe it is exercise itself that is now expendable, since maybe I should be looking for ACTUAL relief from total self-hatred. In these latter two scenarios, I don't know when I would actually listen back to my program, since I rarely have large chunks of unoccupied time. So get ready for even more sporadic posting--either that, or more "who the hell knows what happened on this night" type posts. You have been warned!

Undaunted I Will Be: Transmission 405, 2018 May 2

Monday May 28, 2018
We'll brush aside recollections and current-events commentary for this outing and just talk about the mixtape. I did not enjoy this program. Which is to say, I did not enjoy listening to this program after the fact, which I did twice. I thought it might improve on second listen, but as always I was wrong again, as someone once said. In case you didn't know, my listening venue is the gym; I've been having problems at the gym.
My new depression meds make me extremely restless, and I just can't see the point of running myself to death on the cardio machine every day. (What would I be doing instead, with my time? Good question.) "You're just fat and content now," my psychiatrist tells me. Or--counterpoint--I'm dismayed and out of control.
Maybe this is my way of talking myself out of thinking this was a bad program. It certainly didn't feel like it on the night, and it does get "good" in the last 15 minutes or so, if you want to scroll forward that far. June Tabor doesn't really "fit," after all, which is a sign of her greatness, and elsewhere it begins to dawn on me that I might just be into miserable music. It's good that I learned this before it was too late. I think.

Tough Kids Love Sad Songs: Transmission 404, 2018 April 25
Friday May 18, 2018
Friday May 18, 2018
Now that I've got my Morrissey rant out of the way, I can settle back into my routine. "This was a solid program," and so on. But sometimes the mundane is the truth. This was a solid program. Segue-wise, I probably lost my way somewhere in the middle, but Superpitcher seemed to settle me. 15-minute songs [or whatever] will do that.
But, you know, I can't escape The Smiths no matter what I do. As I've written elsewhere, they are the reason any of this matters to me. But for a time in the late 80s I must have thought that I'd outgrown them, or they embarrassed me, or I was grieving them, or something. At any rate I "moved on" and where did I go but to Felt and the Cocteau Twins, both represented here on this broadcast.
Cocteau Twins broke my heart, and I have chronicled that, sort of, but it wasn't political. I will never be able to quit them unless I discover that one of them hates black people, or something. [I hope I'm not inviting any revelations here.]
I brought Felt into my life at a crucial time. I had of course heard "Primitive Painters" on the radio plenty of times, and I played it plenty of times, as "trendy Sacramentans" [which I ultimately became] were apparently prone to do. But I bought Poem of the River after a harsh telling-off from someone I thought was a friend, and in that moment of vulnerability it was just right. Lawrence struck me, even then, as a more interesting, less problematic Morrissey. Please god don't let him be a Brexiteer or have a thing for Hitler.

As I say during the broadcast, I was having a hard time deciding whether I wanted to play ambient music or disco. So I played both. I have trouble with decisiveness, with finality.
To force a segue here, I am confident that someone like Morrissey would have hated this program, and that doesn't bother me in the slightest. This was the night after the day we Found Out (I guess?) about Morrissey through that horrible softball interview on his own website. Finally freed from wilful misinterpretation and journalistic malfeasance, he reveals that he...is Douglas Pearce, basically? Truly uncanny. Being an aesthete, I used to think Death in June was ripping off the Smiths' visuals; I didn't realize it was an exchange.
Hero worship will enable and force you to do some mental gymnastics, and to cling to mere possibilities. Saying that reggae is vile might have been a reference to its patriarchy and homophobia. It's possible that the chorus of "Panic" wasn't about lynching black people. There's a chance that "We'll Let You Know" and "National Front Disco" are not endorsements. [In my defense, this is more of a probability. But there I go. Or do I? I can't tell anymore.] And so on. But that's my problem all along. Post-1976 we are not supposed to have heroes, I guess, but I do. I've never "gotten it."
I could write a paragraph about when I got "woke," because part of me had to know, but who cares? I've been wrong.
Was he ever anything but "devious, truculent, and unreliable?" I would like to think that the person who wrote "Well I Wonder" and "I Know It's Over" was a great chronicler of loneliness. Even fascists get lonely! It didn't occur to me at the time that perhaps he was lonely because he'd preemptively ruled out the possibility of companionship with most of humanity. I'm still struggling with this reckoning. Those Smiths songs must have been the work of a different person. Right?! Sigh.
I would have been better off seeing Morrissey from the start as many of my friends did, as a Ridiculous Person. [And I did, sort of, but I just loved him anyway.] Or just being on Team Robert Smith, though I never quite understood that beef. But things didn't happen that way. As I've written elsewhere, the Smiths came along when I needed something to come along.
What to do now? I wonder if, after a few more similar interviews, Smiths records will become like Death in June records, a kind of eBay contraband. [I'm thinking also of Spotify's new policies regarding hateful speech and hateful behavior.] Probably not, I guess. But they are a kind of emotional contraband. Will I jettison mine? I told you I have trouble with decisiveness and finality.

Here is another fine program, perhaps even finer than the last. [Feeling like perhaps I should open every salvo with this sentiment, whether it is true or not.] I actually had that very long Ulrich Schnauss piece going during my workout. And it did not kill the vibe, whatever my workout vibe may be. So I heartily endorse this one.
Wonder of wonders, I even sound up for it on this outing. It must be my performer training kicking in, on some level. Though I have been "checking in" with myself and can assure you that I am still having fun, I am very tired in the moment, which comes from my being old and its being late and my inability to get proper sleep. I have also been battling the most wicked depression this winter [yes, it was still winter at this time], from what cause I do not even really know. So there's a lot going on, shallow affect notwithstanding. Does it get better? I think it must.

All of Us Do It, Each Time Asleep: Transmission 401, 2018 April 4
Friday May 04, 2018
Friday May 04, 2018
We got close to the Platonic Ideal of a Bombast on this night. Here is a program that has a bit of everything: a bit of shoegaze, a bit of 4AD delicacy, a bit of Creation, some African music, some electro, and some of whatever my current aesthetic is. (I don't know how to classify it and don't care.) Why "close to," then? Because I didn't feel at the time, and don't feel on repeated listening, that this was "great." But don't pay attention to me. According to one listener, mediated through Felix, our GM, I was "killin' it" on this night. So there you have it, maybe.
Two things I have never mastered in this life are "aligning my perceptions and tastes with those of other people" and "absorbing affirmation." I am good at taking it in and decent at acknowledging it but I can't seem to let it flow through me and touch every part of my being, as I need it to. I'm thinking of the time in Hamlet when Rosencrantz says, "take you me for a sponge, my lord?" and I'm, like, "THAT IS MY HIGHEST ASPIRATION."

"Self-expressive radio," to which I allude at one point in this 400th Bombast transmission, refers to WRFI's mission statement, at least as it was originally rendered. "Self-expression" was one of the values according to which we'd develop and produce content on the radio. I try to live by that every week. I hope that others enjoy what I do. I think that is the case, sometimes, and it's cool and great when it is. Ultimately, though, my program is about and for me and my tastes. Sorry.
I must also point out that I am finished indulging the idea that it might be about anything else, like, say, fulfilling requests. One such gesture, which I made out of pity more than anything else, marred this milestone program. There's a lady who calls in--to many shows, apparently, asking for the same thing over and over--and is quite specific and persuasive. I hear that she's a shut-in, though apparently she is not sufficiently "shut in" as to be unaware of the latest dope, profanity-laced beats produced by the likes of Karol G. There is a new podcast called "Mass for Shut-Ins." Maybe she can listen to that. I can't humor her anymore.
Perhaps I'm being mean, and perhaps I'm marring the occasion more with this rant. But this is me, it's my life, this happened on my special night and I'm going to discuss it.
Here is the thing about requests: I owe it to my listeners only to play things that I think are good. Who am I to decide what's good? Someone in whom the radio station has entrusted a two-hour block of airtime each week, that's who. Why not let the audience decide? They already do, but removing individual decision making leads to something like having a computer spit out random tracks in all styles, all the time. There must be radio stations like that. If that's what you want, go support one. Meanwhile I am going to keep doing this show about me, and refusing trash requests.
Long story short: I hurt my program by trying to be nice. I will spend the next 400 (or so) programs trying to find other, better ways of being nice.

We are at the mercy of various record companies' apparent suicide missions. A number of rarities (and deservedly so) will see the light of day once again, soon, and in our perverse attempt to keep up with the times for our half-dozen devoted listeners we'll be trotting our copies out as Physical Evidence while they still "count." Which brings us to this broadcast's feature, a terrific record by Trisomie 21 that has been in my life for 30 years. I don't find myself listening to it often, and am just blown away by how good it is. Happy times! In college, I had a balding English teaching assistant / discussion leader who was likewise into Trisomie 21. I thought he was just trying to be cool in a "how do you do, fellow kids" kind of way. But of course, now I am him. These things always come back to you.
More happy feelings--there were no computer mishaps on this night, so all mistakes were my own. If I recall correctly there weren't that many, though there are awful segues into and out of Felt. But, really, we are all just one bad Felt segue from personal ruin. Aren't we?
