Night Is Warm and the Stars Are Bright: Transmission 316, 2016 December 31
Friday Feb 03, 2017
Friday Feb 03, 2017
Since we all had a free night, and the last night of the "calendar year" is a useless observance, the entire Catharsis Family Circus rolled into the WRFI studios. It was the first time we had done this in a while, so for those who don't live with her every day, Junior's performance on this episode is something of a...revelation, I daresay. I would be happy to listen to her program, if she had one, but I will also settle for her being a frequent guest on my program and deflating my pretensions (although considering Their Satanic Majesties Request a "masterpiece" is not a pretension). Elsewhere, Lady Catharsis shares a half-dozen "depressing" tunes with us, I completely botch a segue from Wanda Jackson to Thee Michelle Gun Elephant (I swear that one should have worked), and I play THE WRONG JUSTIFIED ANCIENTS OF MU-MU TRACK at the end of the program (it was supposed to be "Burn the Bastards").
I'm sure that, with all its shortcomings (at least I see them that way), this program will be a favorite for you listeners. More voices, actual debate, anyone in the studio besides me, etc. I know how these things work. So I guess it was good to close up 2016--a godawful year!--with a "good" show. We actually didn't do "that much" radio in 2016, "only" 60 programs, thanks to some wise policy (don't quote me on that) from management and my own hypering down. Here's to even fewer--and better--programs in 2017!

Haven't Got a Good Mind for the Details: Transmission 315, 2016 December 28

A quick turnaround between the prior show and this one, but that is how things work sometimes in this fast-paced life I lead. Nominally this was my "regular," Wednesday-night program and should have been "superior" to the hullabaloo on Monday the 26th, but it is tough to tell. I was certainly having a week. I managed to get myself professionally handcuffed and about ten different kinds of depressed while theoretically "on vacation." Let no one tell you I don't do amazing things.
I can say with some confidence that this seems to be "a program of two halves," perhaps fitting for what I like to think of as a mixtape. There is a brooding, downtempo first-half and a lurching, menacing, rocking second half. So were this a literal trail mix and not a metaphorical one, it could use some shaking. But my life has entered an "inefficient and inaccurate" phase. The first draft of just about everything I do needs serious revision, and sometimes there just isn't a second draft.

[GUEST POST]
Halcyon here, with an irregularly regular checkin. I am probably an ill-fitting substitute for Radio Days, but from time to time I fill in for that crew. This is one such time, from last summer. Ithaca is normally quite calm on a Saturday morning, even in the late morning; however, if I recall correctly, this was a "festival" weekend. I needed to create my own "quiet space," and this was it.
Nevertheless, I see that I had re-entered the world of "long" playlists and short songs, which is perhaps not a good development. And it's a bit "mainstream" too, as some local teen is wont to say. I cannot always be sublime. There's always "Matthewdavid," whoever he is. His stuff is pretty "out there," or "in there," whichever.
CRUISING ALTITUDE playlist, 2016 June 4, 1000-1100 EDT:

It is amazing to think that the xmas holidays were a mere five weeks ago. Seems more like five lifetimes. We should be grateful to have survived them all! Anyway, enough romance and nostalgia still attach themselves to the yuletide that I jump at the chance to do radio around this time, so here I am, "sitting in," as usual. I still have not managed to do a program on the 24th, and probably won't, ever, but I guess having Lady C in my life is a decent trade-off.
Funnily enough, I don't really manage to make the "festive" thing happen on this night. It would come soon enough--as I said earlier, I am just behind with a lot of things this year. (And not to say that Thee Headcoats and Ramleh aren't festive in their own ways). I seem happy enough to do what I am doing, but who is to say? It was generations ago.

Monday Jan 30, 2017
40 days in the past, there were two hours on a Wednesday evening that we shared together. Or maybe we didn't, and now's your chance--except I'm probably doing something else at the moment, so find a friend and share this with them. This Solstice program was capably executed, technically, anyway, though maybe not in terms of content. James Brown made it into the mix with one of the most dreary (although, this year, strangely appropriate) xmas tunes you're likely to hear. And there was a chestnut, the Pixies in this case, dealing with some non-specific holiday or other.
Now, I had meant to don a sonic hair-shirt on this night and channel the memory of past transgressions through the medium of A Certain Ratio. But that didn't happen, because, as James says, "I waited a little too long" to get things together. This is where all my troubles seem to begin! So instead we get this strange roller-coaster of a show that seems to make sense for about the first hour and then again at the very end, but loses its shape in the middle--another metaphor for just about everything I do. The best that can be said is that I took the Chameleons' advice. So should you.

Sometimes I cannot explain why or how I do this, except to suggest that maybe it is either a way of staying tethered to reality or as a performance of normativity and calm. There is probably a little of both in this program. I don't know what it is about the "ides" of December or thereabouts, but it has a way of ushering me into some new, toxic phase of life. This year did not disappoint. Maybe, on this particular night, I decided that instead of being too upset to do radio, I was too upset not to do radio.
Or maybe it was a holiday-related chance to play Half Man Half Biscuit. That too seems to make sense, in hindsight. What a crazy time this must have been. I have already repressed most of it, though the body seems to remember. For extra difficulty I crammed three dozen tracks into this broadcast. Guilt and shame, my therapist tells me, are major forces in my life.

"What is good for the future, what was good for the past?" Here is a program that happened 43 days ago [or whenever, depending upon when you read this!]. And it is a GREAT one, I say, with complete objectivity. Not even too many downer tracks to be found here, unless we count Dead Can Dance, and I guess we must. There is a really funny story about John Peel playing a session version of that track, but I don't have the reference in front of me, so you'll just have to do that homework.
Also, fittingly, given the quality and the mood, this is another "last program from a dead universe." And you thought I was finished with themes! This universe--for there are many--was/is a personal one, and dear god is the new one bleak. Thank goodness for mixtapes--among other things, they remind us of what we were, and what we might still be.

[GUEST POST]
Dear Bombasticons, I am back! Momentarily, at least. Here, as my colleague "kid catharsis" would say, a program from a universe that has now closed down. I need hardly point out that I don't remember the exact background circumstances, be they political or cultural or emotional. Clearly, though, this was a springtime broadcast, and it is unnaturally warm right now, as it probably always will be, "going forward," so it seems appropriate enough.
All that said, it sounds to me like this was an almost playful program, and I especially enjoyed the shortness of the playlist and the duration of the tunes. One of these days we will do a program that is just one hour-long tune--at least if I am permitted on the air in the future. There have been other broadcasts since this one, but I don't have a regular airtime at the moment.
Personal note: in real and virtual life the past few days (and indeed our entire new epoch) have been characterized by panic and disc(h)ord. It is important that we hang on to the friends we have, and forgive our trespasses while there is still time.

We are now 48 days behind the times (at least I am; I should not presume to speak for you). I sound tired in the introduction, which is not a good omen, but it is probably the truth. "Tell me, when is it better?" asks the first song--when, indeed. There is also a weird kind of survivor's guilt, as I had just read about five would-be radio colleagues perishing in the recent Ghost Ship fire. "In my little way," I say, what I do is for them. Sadly, my ways are always little. I lack even the energy to "oscillate wildly" (or otherwise) and half-heartedly encourage you, gentle listener(s), to do that on your own.
So perhaps I didn't offer a strong alternative to the live-television performance of Hairspray, with which I was directly "competing." SORRY. In this time I am trying hard to cling to what I can--maybe even to believe what I can, such as my therapist's observation (on this day) that I am "an adorable geek." Words to live up to, if one must keep living.

Here begins my current run of not flaking out on airdates, and also not being pre-empted. From this vantage point, so far, so good. Perhaps the general zeitgeist is furnishing me with enough anger to broadcast with competence--or maybe the inconsistency of my schedule has rendered me unfamiliar enough with the control booth for me to be immune to complacency. Whichever it is, I can testify that you are in good hands with this program. Maybe a bit too much from the Blog That Celebrates Itself, about which I can only say that I'm not receiving any kickbacks.
I don't know why or how we wound up with Siouxsie as a featured performer on this night, but again, maybe the zeitgeist has something to do with that. Speaking of which--30 years ago Friend of Bombast Mr. D and I shared a dorm room, and he had a cassette of Nocturne, which was on Heavy Rotation [if I recall correctly I also had Tinderbox and Once Upon a Time]. This should probably have made my recent "Teen Top Ten" list (that thing on Facebook that everyone was doing a week or so ago) but I didn't want to "backload" my list with cool stuff I was listening to in my late teens. Honesty is our policy. Nevertheless I remember Siouxsie annoying the hell out of our neighbors, but what were we going to do--sit on our hands and listen to the Van Halen* and Eddie Money enjoyed by the other residents of Gilmore Hall?
