Sometimes I cannot explain why or how I do this, except to suggest that maybe it is either a way of staying tethered to reality or as a performance of normativity and calm. There is probably a little of both in this program. I don't know what it is about the "ides" of December or thereabouts, but it has a way of ushering me into some new, toxic phase of life. This year did not disappoint. Maybe, on this particular night, I decided that instead of being too upset to do radio, I was too upset not to do radio.
Or maybe it was a holiday-related chance to play Half Man Half Biscuit. That too seems to make sense, in hindsight. What a crazy time this must have been. I have already repressed most of it, though the body seems to remember. For extra difficulty I crammed three dozen tracks into this broadcast. Guilt and shame, my therapist tells me, are major forces in my life.

"What is good for the future, what was good for the past?" Here is a program that happened 43 days ago [or whenever, depending upon when you read this!]. And it is a GREAT one, I say, with complete objectivity. Not even too many downer tracks to be found here, unless we count Dead Can Dance, and I guess we must. There is a really funny story about John Peel playing a session version of that track, but I don't have the reference in front of me, so you'll just have to do that homework.
Also, fittingly, given the quality and the mood, this is another "last program from a dead universe." And you thought I was finished with themes! This universe--for there are many--was/is a personal one, and dear god is the new one bleak. Thank goodness for mixtapes--among other things, they remind us of what we were, and what we might still be.

[GUEST POST]
Dear Bombasticons, I am back! Momentarily, at least. Here, as my colleague "kid catharsis" would say, a program from a universe that has now closed down. I need hardly point out that I don't remember the exact background circumstances, be they political or cultural or emotional. Clearly, though, this was a springtime broadcast, and it is unnaturally warm right now, as it probably always will be, "going forward," so it seems appropriate enough.
All that said, it sounds to me like this was an almost playful program, and I especially enjoyed the shortness of the playlist and the duration of the tunes. One of these days we will do a program that is just one hour-long tune--at least if I am permitted on the air in the future. There have been other broadcasts since this one, but I don't have a regular airtime at the moment.
Personal note: in real and virtual life the past few days (and indeed our entire new epoch) have been characterized by panic and disc(h)ord. It is important that we hang on to the friends we have, and forgive our trespasses while there is still time.
CRUISING ALTITUDE playlist, 2016 March 13, 1500-1600 EDT:
- "Buddha Machine 5 loop 02" | FM3 | Buddha Machine 5 | CVMK

We are now 48 days behind the times (at least I am; I should not presume to speak for you). I sound tired in the introduction, which is not a good omen, but it is probably the truth. "Tell me, when is it better?" asks the first song--when, indeed. There is also a weird kind of survivor's guilt, as I had just read about five would-be radio colleagues perishing in the recent Ghost Ship fire. "In my little way," I say, what I do is for them. Sadly, my ways are always little. I lack even the energy to "oscillate wildly" (or otherwise) and half-heartedly encourage you, gentle listener(s), to do that on your own.
So perhaps I didn't offer a strong alternative to the live-television performance of Hairspray, with which I was directly "competing." SORRY. In this time I am trying hard to cling to what I can--maybe even to believe what I can, such as my therapist's observation (on this day) that I am "an adorable geek." Words to live up to, if one must keep living.

Here begins my current run of not flaking out on airdates, and also not being pre-empted. From this vantage point, so far, so good. Perhaps the general zeitgeist is furnishing me with enough anger to broadcast with competence--or maybe the inconsistency of my schedule has rendered me unfamiliar enough with the control booth for me to be immune to complacency. Whichever it is, I can testify that you are in good hands with this program. Maybe a bit too much from the Blog That Celebrates Itself, about which I can only say that I'm not receiving any kickbacks.
I don't know why or how we wound up with Siouxsie as a featured performer on this night, but again, maybe the zeitgeist has something to do with that. Speaking of which--30 years ago Friend of Bombast Mr. D and I shared a dorm room, and he had a cassette of Nocturne, which was on Heavy Rotation [if I recall correctly I also had Tinderbox and Once Upon a Time]. This should probably have made my recent "Teen Top Ten" list (that thing on Facebook that everyone was doing a week or so ago) but I didn't want to "backload" my list with cool stuff I was listening to in my late teens. Honesty is our policy. Nevertheless I remember Siouxsie annoying the hell out of our neighbors, but what were we going to do--sit on our hands and listen to the Van Halen* and Eddie Money enjoyed by the other residents of Gilmore Hall?

As I write this, we are about four hours into the Trump era. And we're still here! This is a victory, no matter what anyone thinks. Ages ago, on the night of the program I attach here, I could not have anticipated such euphoria. But life takes you to some funny places.
This is a solid program, well-executed. Depending on your perspective, it is a stunningly eclectic mix or emotionally all over the place. Is there a space for both to co-exist? Sure! But, on re-listening, I am quite pleased. I was making good radio at this time. I think the real "key" to the program is the last 20 minutes, though--not so much "giving up" as feeling like we are about to make it out of this thing alive and wanting to do just one big, basic thing.

Just You and Me and Our Conspiracies: Transmission 307, 2016 November 9

Tuesday Jan 17, 2017
The Wednesday prior to this program, something had happened that set me off--not being an actual diarist, I don't even remember anymore what it was. Having reached what I feel is Old Age for Radio, and no longer feeling I *have* to seize every moment of available airtime, I recused myself from the scheduled Bombastic extravaganza. "No way I'll feel this badly a week from now," I thought. The universe is hilarious in its cruelty sometimes.
Is it all my fault, then, the end of democracy? Might things have gone differently in the Rust Belt had listeners heard Alt-Right Frog in time for it to influence their choices? Surely, in at least one multiverse, this must be what happened. I wonder what it's like there. Here, at least on this night, things seem mostly "normal," perhaps with a bit more humor mixed into the darkness than usual. There is a Milkshakes reissue, because daddy likes the Milkshakes and we're going to hear what daddy wants to play, and like it.

No one outside Russia could have foreseen this at the time, but here is my final program from another universe that is now closed down. On air, I chuckle to myself (and whoever else is listening) about the final presidential debate, which had pre-empted me on the prior Wednesday night (more on this momentarily). What an innocent time that was. The mood of the show seems to reflect it--all over the place but not caring, and happy, if you squint your ears really hard. At least it lands this way on me.
I have been pre-empted somewhat often, you know--at least relative to other WRFI personalities. It's also true that I have done a LOT of radio here, which I guess increases the odds. But Wednesday seems to be either the night on which a lot of special things happen (like my show, usually) or a night the Universe does not want me to occupy. I do feel targeted by the universe sometimes. Most of the time. All the time.

Hhhhokay, I am trying to rebuild this habit of posting, semi-regularly. With luck, this will be two shows posted since my last program. This pace would allow us to catch up...sometime later, maybe in the spring. I am doing my best, honestly. You do have other stuff to listen to, yes? I am thinking you do.
Listening back to this episode, I don't have many "deep thoughts" about what happened. Indeed, what *did* happen? Sounds like the usual, e.g. nothing much. But what a good program this is! I have actually been making some fine radio in this otherwise silent time. "Dark and sad" is the phrase that comes to mind about this program, but you will probably find that not to be the case all the way through.

Tight As Slow Motion But Crazed With Devotion: Transmission 304, 2016 October 5

How...how have you been? Much has happened since we last "spoke." There's been a coup, apparently; you've probably heard about that. I've been up and I've been down; I'm supposed to go back "up" on the advice of my counselor and nurse; maybe this means more posting? We'll have to see. Anyway, here is a program, from a different time and universe.
Perhaps the most surprising inclusion in this night's program is the Vakula tune--and it is a tune. Proficiency! Such a rare thing in my life. So refreshing to hear what sounds like a decent guitar decently played through a decent amp. Personally I am too obsessed with texture to actually get good at playing, so mired am I in the search for the holy grail(s) of "good sound." Steve Albini calls such people "tone lawyers." I confess that I am one. More like "tone support staff," driving to work in a Honda CRV instead of a Benz, but you get the idea. I recall friend of Bombast / former bandmate Mr. D saying to me once, "you always seemed to view the guitar less as an instrument than as something to make noise with." It was true! Now that I know a few technical facts I can amend this to say, "not so much an instrument as a source of voltage."
This night continues an extended flirtation with compilations from "The Blog That Celebrates Itself." I don't know what to tell you--I am a sucker for a) compilation albums b) cover versions and c) free stuff. Oh, and also d) "shoegaze," whatever that is--strangely it does not exhibit much interest in tone-lawyering. Why I find this noteworthy I'm not sure. I probably still carry the sense memory of fearing the suspicion of the program directors at my old station: "you seem only to play stuff from four different labels." I'm not even sure anyone ever said this! (Though it would not have been unfair). Thinking makes the world.
