Trouble Every Day - I'm Working On It: Transmission 66, 2013 October 16

Tonight, we forgo "The Listening Parlour" and "Junior Selector," but we do see the return of "Physical Evidence" in the form of the new Fuzztones tribute record. This brings the tally in our contest against iTunes to a gazillion to one, give or take a few, in our favor. Someone actually called and asked what year one of the songs was recorded, and it delighted me to be able to answer, "2013." In the beginning, the dream was to play "old" music that sounded new. New music that sounds old, though? I guess that is a corollary, and I should be happy about that. Also, I did manage to stay away from the salty snacks. More or less. I had three pita chips on my way out. Don't you judge me.
Indeed we had staged a party the previous evening, following a tumultuous station meeting that involved a stunt--and not a friendly one. Let's just say for now that both program directors were this close to quitting this week. That's quite an achievement for the hijacking troll in our midst. I'm sure there's room for improvement, though. WRFI is a young station. We're just learning, and there are growing pains. I don't think our meetings are up to snuff. We haven't yet matched the notorious Park Slope food co-op meeting, or the WBAI station meeting--look that stuff up yourself, I'm not doing your homework for you--but we're close. Yay? I've said it before, but it bears repeating: radio attracts crazy people, and it brings out the crazy in sane people.
Speaking of which, I don't receive many phone calls during the show. Sometimes I am sad about this, and feel jealousy toward those hosts who seem to get more love [the peeps in Ithaca really adore their righteous, pre-electric, "nu-Mennonite" folk music, make of that what you will]. However, just last night I was in the studio with a DJ duo who were receiving their sixth call of the evening from the same drunk guy. I thought to myself, "thank goodness the people who like my show aren't messed up." Quality over quantity. I was happy to get a reasonable request on this program, and even happier to fill it. Good times.

This time out, BOMBAST goes from being a show about features to being "merely" a show about segues. These transitions work out quite well, all things considered. It has been one of those weeks, and I have had it up to here with people, which probably explains why I was eager to play that Vedagor record. I enjoyed this episode, and was pleased to give Archie Bester and Whore Paint a spin [it seems a shame that time and geography prevented them from collaborating--what a great band name that would be]. I can say with confidence that we will hear from them in the future.

Like The World's End, which I reference at some point in the program, this show takes us back to 1990-91, albeit inadvertently, and the Creation sound, which was dominant then. Teenage Fanclub supplies the "Physical Evidence" with a single too good to have been a promotional freebie, although that is what it was. [Does anyone else remember when SPIN Magazine named Bandwagonesque the best album of 1991, and everyone thought they were just trolling us in what was most assuredly Nirvana's year? Does anyone else now think they were on to something?] Lady Catharsis drops the tune that "began" Primal Scream as we now know them, and as they apparently want to be remembered. And the mighty Ride chime in with another reissued song from that golden time. Oh, and there's a bunch of high-quality new stuff too.
There's another song I really wanted to play, one that also uses that soundbite from Wild Angels, but it turns out that Mudhoney are pottymouths, so the best I can do is embed it here:
Also, if you don't get the Guy LeBatard reference, you need to be part of the Bombast facebook experience. You'll never miss a reference again!

The season's final "test pattern" gives us an opportunity to play some
neglected tunes, uncluttered by "Listening Parlour" and "Physical
Evidence," love those features though we do. As one would expect,
BOMBAST detritus is every bit as good as a regular BOMBAST selection,
whatever that might say. I was definitely "up" for this one, and I sound
it.
Since there's no reason to cloud the experience with additional words, I won't. Au revoir!

Literally Can Also Mean Figuratively: Transmission 54, 2013 August 17
Monday Sep 30, 2013
Monday Sep 30, 2013
Another day, another "Test Pattern" in the style of Bombast. As is common with these "extra" episodes, the "Listening Parlour" is closed--Lady Catharsis is tough to wrangle--but there is some "Physical Evidence" to share, a nice piece of it too. Also, we officially enter "retro August" during this program, for better or worse.
When an episode languishes on the shelf for a long time, as this one has, I have trouble recalling the specific circumstances of the program, unless they were extra special. I know that I'd picked up the habit of following DJ Helen's "Hip Hop Don't Stop" program because she didn't enjoy closing down the building by herself. I tried, regularly, to get someone else to do a shift at this time; surprisingly, there was little interest in a Saturday 11pm slot. Since I wasn't going to show up at that hour just to be an escort, I went ahead and did some full programs.
The Clinton House, for those of you who haven't visited, can be somewhat creepy at that hour. It's a big building--it used to be a hotel--and we're typically its only occupant who is active late at night. The exterior doors do lock automatically at a certain hour, but there are lots of places for people to hide. I was alone in the building one night when the power went out--that was fun! And DJ Helen swears that she has seen a ghost walk through one of the building's walls. I have not witnessed such a thing, which I guess proves that I'm not cool enough to hang with ghosts.
Speaking of--man, does that Doing It For The Kids record bring me back. It should come with a trigger warning!
Also--if you don't own the Buick album, you need to get it, yesterday if not sooner. It's even on iTunes, for god's sake, so no excuses.

Gonna Put a Reggae in Your Jeggae: Transmission 52, 2013 August 8
Friday Sep 27, 2013

A dark and stormy night produces a chill set of tunes, with occasional explosiveness courtesy of Adrian Sherwood and the On-U Sound crew. WRFI was enduring a rough phase with its new transmitter, wherein every patch of rough weather was knocking 88.1 off the air. This particular BOMBAST may always have been a web exclusive, but at least it is now archived.
Listening back through this program, I am well pleased and a bit saddened all at once. Pleased: the selection is tight and makes sense, even for an "overflow" program; good to know that what doesn't "make the cut" for a regular show still passes the quality test. Saddened: it's getting to the point where these "unofficial" programs are actually more fun than the regular show. The regular show is pressure, you guys. I don't know how I managed to do that to myself, but here we are.
Erratum: I was mistaken about Jah Wobble's contribution to the Dub Syndicate track, in that he didn't make one. In my defense, he did play bass on "Overboard," which sits next to it on this record. What's new?

Fresh off the digital recorder, here is last night's episode. The features are plentiful: a side's worth of The Revolutionaries' "Revival Dub" as "Physical Evidence"; two granola-flavored visits to the "Listening Parlour"; and a choice cut from my techno [but not techno] kid. It was a full, satisfying evening.
Notes: it is true, what I say about my history with Mac Davis; I had the computer turned up, to disastrous effect, because of my new fetish for cramming my program into the designated "timekeeper" slots [that's WRFI jargon]; I found that extended set in the second hour a bit jarring--Brian Eno segueing into The Dub Club segueing into Julia Holter sounded much better in the planning stages than in the actual moment. Ah well.

They Even Say You're Insane: Transmission 50, 2013 August 3
Wednesday Sep 25, 2013
Wednesday Sep 25, 2013
This program happened late at night, on a day that followed another late night. I think it was a pretty "on" show, nevertheless. No "Listening Parlour" but a very good "Physical Evidence"--if you had known me in, say, 1988, you might well have guessed that 25 years later I would be spinning a London Underground record after midnight on a radio station in the middle of nowhere, with about 3 people listening. Nothing sad about that.
[Aside: it seems to me--am I alone in thinking this?--that The London Underground, at least on this record, sound like what would happen if you took the "nutty" sound out of Madness and replaced Langer & Winstanley with Martin Hannett. I mean that in the best possible way. I love that first Madness record.]
Also, hey! This is program 50. I'd explained elsewhere--here, I think--that I am superstitious, in a bad way, about programs that end in "zero." So I celebrate quietly--very quietly, once the day rolls over. The program gets weirder and weirder, especially after I find myself with extra time and have to toss in a few unplanned tracks.
Radio is kind of addictive. You are grateful at first for whatever airtime you get, and then you begin...having needs. I had all this extra material sitting around, and "only" the regular Wednesday night program on which to play it. And we have these empty "Test Pattern" time slots just sitting there, and it's August to boot, so people are going on vacation...it's here that I begin to travel down a dark path.
But enough. It's still "good times" for now.

We herewith complete the induction of the mighty Coil into the BOMBAST Hall of Legends. Lady Catharsis even informs me that she enjoyed one of their songs tonight. I told you this was the most beautiful single of the bunch, did I not? As we steadily approach normalcy, we also throw in a host of new tunes and take care of some long-unfinished business.
It seems like we just talked, and I guess we did. There's a sizable backlog of BOMBAST programs, and I'm working my way through them as best I can. I believe this post gets you caught up on the "regularly scheduled" episodes, with the "impromptu" or "fill-in" episodes to come--Cthulu willing, we'll have them all posted by the end of the month.
This episode is a weird, dynamic set. I wouldn't necessarily say it's one of the "best," but it does contain many textures, moods, and energies, which was the original "dream." It's always a strange night when Coil is playing--what would life be without strange nights?

We inaugurate the new season at WRFI with a fully-loaded program of features and regular stuff. It's mostly rock and techno tonight. The reggae and Afro-pop will come, in time.
Did you miss me? I certainly missed you. Retro August was just crazy. Did you know? I did eight Bombast programs in July, and nine in August. That is entirely too much radio for me, and too much me for radio. I went so far down the rabbit hole that I found myself doing these extracurricular excursions, to be discussed at some other time. At any rate, it is good to be back on the horse, and down to one horse. For now. I think.
Somewhere in the middle of this program, if you listen closely to one of the voice-overs, you can hear raised voices in the background. Radio people: we argue with great frequency! For once, I was not involved. Good times.
