[GUEST POST]
Captain Halcyon here, pressed into service on a day when kid catharsis "can't get it together," as he is fond of saying, to post something. Well--I happen to sit on a backlog of radio broadcasts from late summer and early fall, and here is one. I listened to this today, and to my surprise, it made me a little bit sad. I cannot analyze this and don't want to. But it feels safe to speculate that perhaps my mind was elsewhere and this program is not the "downer" I initially felt it to be. Or, perhaps it is, if that is your thing. I don't wish to scare you away.
As I write this, the weather outside is "halcyonic," if I may be so bold as to say that. Blue skies, a bit of chill, thawing snow: a good day for this content, and since I am not scheduled to do a live program, perhaps a perfect day for a listen. Do be sure you take some kind of "Mindflight" or other.
More soon.

ALMOST THERE = ALMOST HERE. I present for your entertainment (or whatever) our weekly mixtape, executed live and on the spot (and well, I say). Thanks to Soft Grid for furnishing one of the better opening tracks in recent memory. This is critical. In another life, I "worked" in the theatre, and I recall being able to tell, be it a performance or audition, whether the "presenter(s)" had their stuff together, within about 15 seconds of the start of the thing. So it is in radio; at least it seems that way to me.
My (rightfully exasperated) therapist asked me yesterday if there was anything that made me happy. I was able to come up with about three things, radio being one of them. Still! Sometimes I surprise myself. Or is it that I forget who I am, and occasionally remember?

[GUEST POST]
Captain Halcyon here, with my weekly report (as is usual these days). I have brought with me a sound file that represents my (temporary) return to a regular time slot. My program began in late summer, four years ago, and if I stray from it, late summer reminds me of why I do it. This broadcast ranks as one of my favorites. Turns out, I am not as averse to words as it might seem (I have noticed that most of my shows seem to obey a "no words" / "no drums" rule).
Here is a secret I would like to share with you: like "Kid Catharsis," I am cursed with remembering the calendar date on which a really good or really bad thing happens in my personal life. If you don't suffer this curse, you are fortunate. The dates pile up to the point where it is just one observance after another. At any rate, I am embarking on a life project of reclaiming these calendar dates by doing something positive on the "bad" ones. Now, if I can only talk my gracious host into trying this along with me.

Tuesday Feb 14, 2017
The past is rapidly catching up with us! Here is a program from (a mere) thirteen nights ago, and which I therefore almost remember, vibes and all. A real sense of nostalgia--without tears--pervades this broadcast, as it sounds like something I might have done in the first few months of this Bombastic adventure. Those were good times, and I have no regrets! "Physical Evidence" is nowhere to be found--still haven't got it together--but I can offer you a return to the much-missed "Listening Parlour." It seems, at first pass, like a "Planet of Desire" would improve greatly upon the one we inhabit, but the prospect of a world full of Lacanians and void of Buddhists gives me pause.
You can find "rock" here and there in this sonic landscape, but it's mostly dark and chill. It's a short playlist, as some of these "tunes" are of epic length. "I believe in chaos," not sophistication, compositional proficiency or brevity. At least not at this particular time. Ask me again later.

Please find attached a "mixtape," wherein regular Bombastic service resumes. By "regular service" we mean "a regularly-scheduled program according to the current style." By "current style" we mean that your host can't pull it together to the point where a program has any recurring features. So there is no "Physical Evidence" or "Listening Parlour" to be found here. Those are forthcoming. We promise.
This is a pleasureable listen--but aren't they all? At least most of them? It seems like we are in good hands with whomever I was feeling myself to be on this particular night. You are likely to use this successfully as a carefully monitored experience or "bed music" for whatever else you happen to have going on in your life. Some of the segues are perhaps more jarring than we intended them to be, and, "according to the current style," the awkward fits seem to happen in the second hour. What can I tell you? We're getting old. Thanks to the royal blue social media platform I was reminded of a show I did exactly three years ago (as of this writing), on a night when I "stepped in" to fill a void in the schedule between 11pm and 1am. No more of that, surely.

Here is my most recent "fill-in" program and the last one for the foreseeable future. (Just watch--tomorrow night someone will have an emergency and there I--THE HERO--will be.) It was predictable, but nonetheless worthy of remark, that Danny and I were both subbing for female DJs who had gone down to Washington DC to do some actual work. I must have done a good job--I managed to convince one (admittedly baked) caller that I was DJ Penelope. No doubt the whole "not talking" thing that I have lately pushed to extremes must have helped, but in the spirit of giving myself credit, I would like to think it was the music too.
This was an "overflow" program, consisting of a bunch of things that I hadn't managed to fit in over the course of the last year or so. Naturally I forced them to co-habitate and, occasionally, the segues were not terrible. I suppose more than a few of these were things I'd meant to play the night I opted out of radio on account of hitting my head. Dear god, how long ago was that, and was it where my troubles began? At any rate, I was true to my word, I think: this program may divert you but it will teach you nothing.

There have been many such programs lately, but here is yet another recording from a genre that could be termed "final shows from historical eras now passed." I tell you what, I "went out" with a bang. This is one for the pantheon. And we didn't even need "The Listening Parlour" or "Physical Evidence" to make it happen! You will be very satisfied with this mixtape or I will pay back every penny you spent on it.
A time capsule, but not evergreen: we do find ourselves reading promo copy for a "make your voice heard" feature related to the (then-) impending inauguration. Very quaint, this gestaltly therapy of speaking "truth" to power. I may regret not having done more of this in my life, but I also have my doubts. Imagining you have some degree of control and influence: must (have) be(en) nice. Pretty sure I will die wondering what that is like.
But enough ranting. A new era dawns, and there are at least four more programs in it!

Hello, listeners and readers of Bombast. I am Captain Halcyon, back with another program from last summer. These morning departures are uncommonly good. This particular broadcast went so well that I decided to play songs on a regular basis last fall (albeit in the afternoon, sadly). I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
These recordings are intended to "tide you over." I have been gone for a while. But I am coming back soon. Sunset is getting later every day. Flight season approaches.

From full-featured to featureless goes our program this time out. This is not to say that it is soup--this broadcast strikes me as more of a grab bag of sounds. Admittedly, my review of this mixtape has been a bit unfocused--busy with work, and preoccupied by some emotional crisis or other, I didn't get a good pass of the first hour. The second does contain one truly sublime moment, the passage going from Juan Atkins through PAAR. That is the good stuff, which is not to say that it isn't all good stuff.
I was a bit short on words during this outing. It's just been the case with me lately. Nothing would please me more than to tell you it comes from a time of relative calm--but I am not destined for pleasure. I also clam up in times of anxiety and dread, which this certainly is for many of us, though I have my own reasons
Oh, I thought of one more positive thing--there's some Tross on this mixtape. That is definitely worth hearing once or twice.

We Let In Light and We Banish Shade: Transmission 317, 2017 January 4

Flying solo again on this outing, I took care of some unfinished business. Since xmas is technically a twelve-day observance--more on this momentarily*--I empty this year's quiver of holiday tunes. Five weeks after the fact, it doesn't sound clever; still, I don't regret it. More importantly, we deliver a "full-featured program," the first for some time, with a pertinent track from Lady C and A Certain Ratio occupying the prestigious "Physical Evidence" chair. This, too, was a belated seasonal observance. As I say, I would have liked to do this on the Winter Solstice (because you can't always play Coil; even I can't), but "things happened." The Old & The New is probably not a solstice record for you, but it is for me, a souvenir from a trip to Tower Records in Los Angeles during an ill-fated vacation, the guilt and shame of which I still carry. "Sounds Like Something Dirty," indeed. (In case you didn't know, this archive is also my diary, so deal.)
*I insist on stretching out the yuletide forever, by the way, on account of the recurring childhood trauma of watching my next-door neighbors throw their Christmas tree into the street, like clockwork, every December 26. That seemed wrong to young, Catholic Master Catharsis, as it does to older, lapsed Kid Catharsis. Apologies if I have told this story before--one only has so many to tell.
