[GUEST POST]
Bonjour! Guy posting again, with a program that more or less fell in the forest without making a sound. It was spontaneous, what with Sarah, the usual host at this time, having thrown out her back or something like that. I am not one to squander a chance to exploit anyone's misfortune. So anxious was I to hear some beats--and who among us has not been there--I forgot to advertise my appearance on the radio, nearly forgot to record it, and then forgot where I stored the recording. All of that is resolved here, for better or for worse.
I see that I managed to play The Orb for a second consecutive outing, and I rue the oversight. We are indeed turning what was once an adventure into a reliable site of consumption.

Bringing our insane summer to a close (by force of will, in defiance of nature and calendar), this program seemed besieged by problems I can now no longer identify. You'll just have to listen to find out what they were. I know that at one point in the evening one of the cd channels on the console was greatly favoring the right channel over the left. The solution was hitting a button over and over again. Retro consoles are cute that way. Anyway, it was a night like that.
Reading about John Peel these days (what's new?), Lady C having bought me a copy of Good Night and Good Riddance, which is a Very Large Book. Feeling inadequate as I am probably doomed to do, thinking about my hesitance to speak and my shallowness of affect when I do speak. Missing the days of adventure but knowing that I can't get off this carousel and hope to get back on.
What's happening with you?

[GUEST POST]
Guy, returning. Here is another program I did last October. Why take so long to post it, you ask? It is all dead time anyway, what is your hurry?
This broadcast came on the heels of another, four nights prior, if we must be exact. Lacking time to prepare, I engaged in a bit of nostalgia. It would embarrass me, if I had shame.
Additionally I was a bit distracted by all the hub-bub about the imminent Halloween observance, something I regard as a sanctioned, (therefore) woeful festival of escapism and gluttony of the worst kind (the indiscriminate kind). It seems to me the only thing to do is to play tricks instead of allowing oneself to be placated with "treats." No one ever seems to have anything interesting in mind. Had I a place to live, I would refuse to buy candy and tell each plastic-clad visitor, "I have nothing for you, so you will have to trick me." I suppose it's best for everyone that I don't settle down, preferring instead to drift.

You Say You Love the Shadow: Transmission 298, 2016 August 24
Tuesday Sep 06, 2016
Tuesday Sep 06, 2016
Welcome to the first Bombast of the local academic year. I have made this observation before, but it seems timely again now: the show has entered "senior year" territory on the college radio timescale. Which is not to rule out eventual super-senior or "old timer who just won't get out of the way" status; nevertheless it is illustrative. I find myself reminiscing about the "olden days," which are, like, 2013, and thinking of that early time as "innocent" (it so was not).
Facebook's "memory" engine reminded me that this interview happened once upon a time (and thanks to Eric for hosting me, and apologies to him and everyone else for my insistence on appearing in my "deejay persona" and not as the actual me). It got me thinking about the conceptual framework of this program and whether I've strayed from it (I don't think I have, but maybe I'm not the best judge). If I do say so myself--and I do--I think we've been remarkably consistent over the nearly 300 hullabaloos that we have hosted. Listen for yourself--here's Transmission 1 (shoddy sound quality, such was WRFI-ness back then).
It really is, as I say, a special thing to be on the radio. I was talking to my mental health professional last week about the ongoing crisis in my life that is free time; I told her that radio was the last leisure-time activity in my life that I would jettison. "I think it broke my heart," I said, "not to be on the radio. It took me 20 years to notice it, but I realized it when I got back on." This is true.
Thank you, listener(s), for helping me hold my heart together.

A Cheap Affair, A Sordid Truth: Transmission 297, 2016 August 19
Friday Sep 02, 2016
Friday Sep 02, 2016
I mentioned in a recent post that the August 8 program, which maybe should not have happened, was a bookend. Here is the other, and again, this program maybe should not have happened. I was filling in for Conference of the Birds, feeling compelled because it was the 19th. You know, a lot of things have happened in my life on the 19th of this or that month. Almost all of them have been bad things. (Thankfully, this show was not a bad thing. It is quite good.)
Maybe some of you don't remember the era of handwritten correspondence, when bad news really did travel slowly. You couldn't get a text or an email or a DM or a "poke" or whatever the latest techno-horror is. Life as you know it might be over, only you wouldn't know it. The truth was on its way. I remember one August when I was blissfully unaware for five days that my heart had been cuisinarted. Is that a liminal state? It was certainly "death from above," I can tell you that.
Good thing I'm over it now.
Technical note: this program was recorded on our new auto-recording software at the station because I was so busy talking to DJ Drew about smartphone plans (there's me, being a luddite again) that I forgot to turn my own recorder on. I think it sounds pretty decent! ALSO there is a hilarious segment in here somewhere in which I give myself a real-time geography lesson. Not to be missed.

"We've been further behind in the past than we are now," I said during a recent broadcast, "if that makes sense." I'm not sure. Nevertheless our attempt to catch up with ourselves continues. Two weeks now.
As our unintentional flirtation with a post-Physical Evidence world proceeds, one episode seems to blend into another. It seems, on the surface, to be mere soup, or "trail mix," or whatever you want to call it. And yet as I ease into recordings such as this one I feel I am in good hands. "Who is this selector? This is exactly what I need to hear." Which is why the program exists.

Then They Expect You To Pick a Career: Transmission 295, 2016 August 10
Tuesday Aug 30, 2016
Tuesday Aug 30, 2016
Investing emotionally in dates, remembrances, and symbolism is an unfortunate habit of mine. A lingering vestige of my Catholic upbringing, maybe, this tendency has left my calendar littered with "important" dates of varying heaviness. This one is a feast day, that one is a solemn observance, this other one requires a duty of me, and so on. It's exhausting on more than one level.
Of course this was a regularly scheduled Hump Night program, and could have been (in my mind), but then again it actually was (in the real world), because the drama was so far backstage it wasn't happening in three-dimensional space. At some point in the past, Grandma Catharsis told me that August 10 was the day I was due to be born. I was late. I am always late! It has become the story of my life. I have internalized this narrative. Would you have gleaned any of this from the program content, had I not told you? "Holy Night," maybe, but that could mean anything. Of course the answer is "no." But it was meaningful to me. I was keeping vigil. Does that act produce a trace of energy, perceptible beneath the noise, that somehow survives in this bit-starved .mp3? Who is to say?
This content might have appeared later, had I not claimed a timeslot two nights prior, in a fit of "rank opportunism." Time is a funny thing! Anyway, August 8 is yet another "holy night" of an entirely different kind, silly and grave all at once. It's a bookend. The other is coming.
Finally, due to a time difference, and an actual birthday, this night should have marked the re-opening of the Hall of Legends but due to my own indecision and crippling shyness that didn't happen. Once again I am late with an important thing.

It All Comes Down to Girls That Break My Heart: Transmission 294, 2016 August 8
Tuesday Aug 30, 2016
Tuesday Aug 30, 2016
Recent developments have forced me to do some letting go--or, let's give me some credit--have given me the opportunity to choose to let things go, so hopefully you will forgive me if this and other August programs are a bit "loose." Given that the "underground music" release calendar is still, surprisingly, based around the "Western" academic schedule, this month was bound to feel like a clearinghouse of things that didn't make it onto the playlists of "tighter" programs. And so far it does.
We've got a "Listening Parlour" excursion that happens about four weeks later, I think, than it was originally meant to happen. And a grab-bag of tunes that are a bit past their "sell by" date (not that we are selling anything), with no "Physical Evidence" to tie everything together (warning: this is going to continue for a while). Maybe this is a dress rehearsal for when my stash of "Physical Evidence" runs out--as it must someday--if, that is, I make it that far & continue to keep going. Who knows? Still, freed from any kind of pressure or organization, I deliver an excellent program here, I have to say.

Walk Me Down the Lane Where Shadows Will Be: Transmission 293, 2016 August 3
Thursday Aug 18, 2016
Thursday Aug 18, 2016
With this program we began August, traditionally a vacation month for most civilized people. But excellence never sleeps! And I am always vacant. So, really, nothing new here.
This feels like a turned page, however, probably because the poststructuralist resort I operate had shut down for the summer, and life was beginning to feel "normal" again. Meaning: full of inadequacy and scarcity and radical self-hatred AND boredom.
Thank goodness for summertime compilations! I don't know what I would do, as a person or a disc jockey, without them.

Relative sanity was approaching on this particular night. I imagine it "approaching" in a white stretch limousine, and in this fantasy I see it turning a corner, slowing to a crawl, its headlights blinding me through the steam rising from the pavement after an annoyingly brief thunderstorm. It's just a block or two away; it's here for me, but full of menace.
It was almost back to "real life" at the time I did this program, my summer camp drawing to a close. "You have to be high-maintenance," an administrator told me just now, "to be involved with THAT." Hmmm--camper by camper, it varies. But...yeah.
I recall feeling great about this program at the time--the first such episode in a while, and it's been that way since. Here's to clarity!
