[GUEST POST]
Ah well ah well ah well ah well. Husker du? It is I, Guy, having changed my mind about never doing this radio thing again. I am drifting through the "strongman" countries this summer and it is the United States's turn, so here I am in "lovely" Ithaca and crashing into the lives of the Catharsis family. If you ask me, they could use a bit more chaos, and I am just the man. Don't get used to this--a regular program is an "anchor" to Kid C and it is to me--the difference is that we feel differently about anchors. Do try to savor this brief time we have together, but for goodness' sake don't do it passively. Make use of this soundtrack--as an alarm clock, a gift to your downstairs neighbors, a soundtrack to lovemaking or some other kind of mindless hedonism. Don't disappoint me and work out to it or something like that. I am counting on you, dear listener.
Until next time, assuming I don't wind up in jail somewhere.

We'll Keep Heaven Rolling Along: Transmission 417, 2018 August 1

When last we left our narrator, he was getting very emotional and personal. Sometimes, at those moments, people choose to leave; at other times I drive them away. I've been in dialogue with a friend lately and have been wondering when this podcast site "transitioned" from mere liner notes to a diary. I started looking for the answer, but it's too daunting a task. There have been so many of these programs! If I look into the mess, I find the mess staring back.
Since I don't want to be obscure and solipsistic (and, by the way, I never mean to be, except to protect the feelings of specific people), I guess I will say some things about this particular episode. It was the first after my exhausting summer gig ended, and it sounds a bit like collapse. There are several good moments, and I would say the segues are consistently good. But "the tunes between the segues," as I call them? In all honesty a handful of them should not have made the cut, so this program is less than what it could or should be.
At least I still have standards, right?

Lost in a Permanent Dream: Transmission 416, 2018 July 18
Monday Aug 06, 2018

I write often, it seems, about the "end of" this or that "universe," of a program closing a chapter without my knowing it at the time. Consider this the latest instalment, as we say goodbye to the recurring feature known as "Physical Evidence." It is dead; long may it live! And indeed, I didn't know at the time, but learned soon hereafter, that it was making Junior uncomfortable to record the voiceover. Without Junior, this feature is nothing, so away it goes. One of the "wrongs" with my undergraduate show which I set out to "right" with this one (shall we call it "post-doctoral?") is that I was always so deeply into myself and my own thing; this is, whatever it may seem, a family program.
On account of that, I have been wondering how much gas Bombast as a whole has left in the tank. Sometimes I feel that Physical Evidence was the program, though I am reminded that I've done many episodes that didn't include it, and that the show began without it, during a long period of unemployment, as something that was supposed to keep me connected to the world of people so that I didn't go completely feral, as I was threatening to do. So Bombast doesn't need Physical Evidence, but I also no longer need this radio thing in the same way. Why the existential dilemma, then? As I wrote back when Physical Evidence began under another, unfortunate, name, I wanted a way of dealing with the past, a way not to be doing "Today's Aberration, Tomorrow's Fashion" with the Forced Exposure catalog (that's an inside joke, sorry).
But one of my problems is that my head is frequently in the past and I have trouble "Being Here Now." So I am also thinking that a present-focused program may be a thing I need at the moment, and that maybe quitting this gig because my kid hit puberty isn't the most coherent course of action. Maybe. Also, it strikes me now (sorry if you've already realized this) as pretentious and condescending to think the present doesn't acquit itself perfectly well, or that I need to add value or focus to it.
I am guessing this will always feel like unfinished business: I have a list of about 100 things I was meant to play as part of this feature, but didn't get to. That will make me a little bit sad unless I find a way of folding those releases in somehow. I suppose I could do something like "playing the whole damn record," as I did with Lonely Is An Eyesore that one time, and which I didn't do often enough with the Physical Evidence releases. Or, you know, maybe I could just "sit with" my sadness and see how that goes. I'm doing the latter for the time being.
I come to bury Physical Evidence, not to praise it. And not even to eulogize it properly--this is a diary, not a collection of essays or even a proper blog. PE was truly the essence of the program in that it featured in some of my best shows, some of my worst, and a lot in the middle. But its absence is mostly a hole in my heart. Is that a tear rolling down my cheek as I write this? Yes, yes it is. Alright, we've both done enough work here for now.
So the "crime of the week" feature in these commentaries will have to wait for another time.

Maybe Heaven Is All That's There: Transmission 415, 2018 July 15
Tuesday Jul 31, 2018
Tuesday Jul 31, 2018
An opportunity arose for me to do a stand-in appearance, so in I stood. Not only that, but it was an early-evening show, despite the fact that I've been telling myself for years that I don't work in daylight (that would be Captain Halcyon's role, but he has flown off to "bluer skies," whatever that means). So on at least three levels this was a "throwback" kind of program, the third being that, like the previous outing, I played some stuff I'd played before, and notably long pieces. What can I say? This summer is making me want to regress.
On that note--I thought long and hard about it while the track was playing, and awesome though it is, I don't think I can hear "The Fatal Day" anymore, given some things that are happening. That is rough. I remember first hearing it--of course--in the studio at KDVS, loud enough to make the walls shake. (If you aren't blown away by that experience, there is something wrong with you; there was a Godflesh tune with which I had a similar experience.) It was one of those 4AD summers, of which there seem to have been many. I suspect that multiple people did with favorite records what I proceeded to do with this one--surreptitiously "borrowing" the record from the station's library (a state crime over which you could lose any financial aid you were receiving) so I could tape it at home. Good times! Whatever happened to that stupid, fearless kid? Only the stupid remains, I think.
Should I confess to a criminal offense every time I post a program? That seems like a good journey to embark on.

Sunday Jul 22, 2018
This program came at the end of a "day off" in which there was very little to do. This is an odd thing (I think) about Ithaca: the 4th of July is kind of vacant in terms of civic activities. The fireworks are usually the night before, for example. One doesn't hear about holiday-related festivities, though perhaps I am not listening. At any rate, I kept myself busy on this day by worrying about work--there would be a huge event the next day, but it is never too early to freak out.
The week prior, I had found myself marvelling at what I called the "simple joy" of someone else's show. I can't say I set out deliberately to chase that this time around (which may be my problem in the first place), but I do think that on at least a subconscious level that explains why I played so many things in this program that I have played before, and so many lengthy things specifically. It felt like the old days, when I would do stuff like this all the time and not really be bothered. What a life I had then! That is what I miss, more than the person I was.
You know what else I miss? Having an Isacc Hayes record that is in decent condition! Good grief, my copy of Joy is in bad shape. Somehow we made it through that, together, which is nice. Do you know what else we made it through? My 10,000th track played on the air at WRFI, if you can believe it--actually whether or not you believe it it is true. "Soul Soldier" is the answer to this trivia question. You're welcome.

Lights Flicker, Time To Start The Show: Transmission 413, 2018 June 27
Sunday Jul 22, 2018
Sunday Jul 22, 2018
It begins. After a week off I deliver the first show of the "intense" period of my year, when the critical theory summer camp that I manage (yes) is in full swing. This is my third year of doing it, and somehow it is becoming more stressful. This may be a result of my medication (and boy do I need to find a new psychiatrist) or it may be a result of my trying to do it better (look at Mr. Model Employee over here). Whatever the cause, I find myself five pounds lighter because my stomach is full of butterflies all the time. Those who know me well, which is hardly anybody, will recognize OVEReating as my normal response to stress. So this is something greater or qualitatively different. What was I saying earlier, about bodies?
Anyway, life still has its pleasures. On this night I got to witness a new show being born, and it is good to know that this still warms my heart. And what a terrific show it was--though mine was quite good on this night, it did not measure up to the simple joy delivered by "Rocket Morton" (whom I mistakenly referred to as "Rocket Morgan," ugh). I need to explore this idea, and on the next couple of shows I think I try.

Physical Evidence returns on this outing in the form of The Times, about which more soon. Little did I know at the time that this would be the penultimate Physical Evidence, but so it would. More about that...in a later diary entry, I guess. Back to the episode at hand: this is pretty good, not great, and hella...dynamic, I guess. Kudos to Ed Ball for not compressing the dickens out of himself. I'm not even sure what I mean.
I remember buying this Times record in the summer of 1996, coming across it online right around the time I discovered that you could use the internet to buy records. I don't remember whether I was slow to that realization or not. But everything was slow back then. Somehow I purchased Beat Torture and 23 Skidoo's Seven Songs in the same order. It was ever thus! This was also right around the time I made the decision that I would try to get in shape, or at least be a bit less fat than I was. (Why on earth I make this connection I don't know, but I do.) 22 years later...I'm still trying. I've been thinking a lot lately about bodies and why they cause us so much grief, and doing so without many epiphanies, I have to say. Sadly, that too has always been the case.

Astonishing Empathy, or So It Says Here: Transmission 411, 2018 June 6
Friday Jul 13, 2018
Friday Jul 13, 2018
Finally healthy, I deliver another well-executed program on this night. I might also say "well conceived," but there is a solid ROCK BLOCK in the middle of it. "There was an hour where I was really enjoying your show," Lady Catharsis tells me. I have no doubt what part she means. Nor do I have any idea how that happened. Admittedly, it's a decent hour.
Doing standard commercial dj things ("rock blocks," "two-fer Tuesdays," "gettin' the Led out," etc.) has never really interested me, though I have been fascinated with deejaying since I was young, and I wouldn't mind if one of these days I managed to get a satin jacket or something like that out of it. One time when I was a kid my family was eating in a pizza parlour and I spotted some grown up wearing an honest-to-goodness satin jacket with a local radio station's logo emblazoned on the back. These things really existed. I went up and talked to the guy--I was maybe 11 or 12--and sure enough he was an on-air personality that I knew. Strangely, though he was not what I would call unfriendly, he was more interested in playing "Asteroids," or whatever, than in talking to me. I wonder whatever happened to the guy, whose name I of course don't remember. And I wonder whatever happened to me, that I am now deejaying for no money and not even really any swag, and not terribly interested in talking to the kids.

The previous week's cold still hung over me during this program, and you can tell by the frog that I can't seem to extract from my throat. But it also left behind a trace of its magic, for this is another excellent iteration of the Bombast thing, whatever that is. (Four hundred shows and I am still figuring it out.) The added bonus is that on this night, there is no Featured Artist that Lady Catharsis cannot stand! Or is that a subtracted bonus?
In non-musical news, my work life is coming into sharp focus. Too sharp, frankly. I am entering a seven-week period in which I have to be "on" all the time. I will wake up in the middle of the night with thoughts of tasks I have to complete. At the same time, little of it is truly within my control. Such is the life of a summer camp coordinator. Bringing it back home--what does this mean for the program? Chances are it will get really good or really bad, as psychologically much will depend on it. It's my anchor.

Got the Tools but Don't Know the Rules: Transmission 409, 2018 May 23

Another week and another "industrial" record is the feature. I didn't plan it this way, but certainly none of my long-term acquaintances would be surprised. I just do what I do, I guess, circumstances notwithstanding. On this night, the circumstance was a fever (I am just getting over the accompanying cold). Am I really this dedicated? No, I had to visit the station in any case, and figured I might as well do my show, as scheduled. Someone told me once that the only reason to miss a show was on account of death--your own. I'm not that dedicated.
It certainly didn't feel like it on the night, but this is a masterful program, if I say so, and I do. I can see, listening to Black Light District, why Lady Catharsis hates Coil so much, and maybe it stems from this very album. It's not for everyone. But it goes with everything. This would seem to argue against its greatness, according to my oft-cited theory. But, let's be honest: I have no theory, only good taste.
