Here we are, at the end of a concept. At least that's what I think, though as always I didn't know it at the time. I did not even "give up" on account of this night's disasters. Earlier in the evening I'd been accosted by the guy on the commons hawking his shitty rap cd; having already made the mistake of buying it a few years ago, tonight I said "no thanks" as I walked by, only for him to tell me to "shut the fuck up." Ok, happy to. It was the dreaded "playlist reporting" period at the station, but when I arrived my laptop "arbitrarily" decided it wasn't doing internet anymore, so that was a neat obstacle. I began recording my show late, as you will hear--apologies to The Durutti Column. And I couldn't give away tickets to Stop Making Sense, from which I can only conclude that absolutely no one was listening.
"What else can go wrong," I ask at one point, though without these disclosures you might not know it from hearing hour 1. Sure, the Slits segue was late, and the Underground Youth segue was too soon. (What would Bombast be, without, etc.). It's not a terrible mixtape. I might well have continued in this vein, had I not been "radicalized," for lack of a better description. But I was, so I haven't.
I'm sure the program will continue to sound just as ragged and haphazard, but maybe more intentional "going forward." And, yes, this is a difference. My therapist says I have more power now--is it because I have changed, or did I change because of it? The forensic analysis is not yet complete. But things are different now.
Was it good, while it lasted? Mostly, sure. I mean let's hope so. I spent more than six years on this.

Flying Aboard the Seduction 747: Transmission 470, 2019 June 7

Whatever we had bickered about earlier in the week must have resolved itself, because Lady Catharsis joined me on this broadcast, so I invite you to enjoy what is basically a two-hour trip to "The Listening Parlour." We made two observances on this night, and because I had a guest, these were a little out of balance. A little. I try to play whatever Lady Catharsis tells me to; if she brings in a dozen records I will try to play them all. Here she brings in a couple of Tom Jones records and I do the best I can with them. For my part, if I remember correctly the concept was "lounge music." I'm not sure how well I did.
Prince didn't get as much bandwidth as he deserved, though I did save "International Lover" for the all-important coda. I could have played the entirety of 1999 but I think it might have been too much for my wife. A few weeks later I was out with a few #theorycamp-ers at a dreary karaoke bar, and someone asked me what my karaoke song would be. Mind you--it would take a lot for me to do this kind of thing, and I did not have "a lot" in me on this night; but after a decent amount of thought I landed on "Little Red Corvette." I think I could at least give Sandra Bernhard a run for her money? Anyway.
Even so I like the concept of Prince even better than the reality of Prince; maybe, given things I've heard and read about him, that is inevitable. Lady C tells me that Tom Jones told an "off-color" joke at the gig she attended. Maybe we should abjure all of this music. Maybe we have made mistakes. I'm still thinking about this.
You know what isn't a mistake? You know what is a true instance of the divine reaching down and grazing my humble program ever so briefly? Something made me say "deboo" as I remember (maybe not even correctly?) Robert Studley Forrest Hughes saying it. Which led me to this clip, and ultimately the Bryan Ferry track.
Of course, as fate would have it, Hughes did a racism at least one time, and so we are reminded that everything is broken.

At the beginning of June, everything was "normal" for me. Surely I was preparing for #theorycamp, all by myself, without a student assistant. I was avoiding the work that needed doing at home--getting ready for our move. Lady Catharsis and I were squabbling, whether it was about that or something else. Check out her "Listening Parlour" intro! She was not having it on this day. But she is a professional, a "diamond," if you will.
I am going through the motions in writing this blurb, just as I must have been going through the motions on this broadcast. Nevertheless it is a solid first hour, "close to the platonic ideal," as my notes say (even my notes are pretentious and full of shit). The Leathers, Captain Wardrobe, and Lurkers segues were terrible, if I recall, and I probably don't. As always, the music in between was good. All of this, though, comes with the subtext of a heavy sigh, as this "concept" of the program is approaching its end. Do you know what isn't going through the motions, though, what isn't accompanied by sighing? The Psychedelic Furs. No misgivings about that.

We are getting closer. Here is another one. I hope you can enjoy these while they last. To me, these sound like someone else's program at this point. It's not literally the case, but I have been through a lot, you guys. Let's savor the innocence where it manifests itself.
On this day there were imbroglios about a razor commercial featuring a young transgender man learning to shave, and John Cleese cancelling himself over Brexit. Somewhere in the midst of all that there was a radio program that may or may not have reflected the vibes. Probably not.
"Pretty good until ill-conceived Biltmore Dive segue," my notes read. "And then of course Lali Puna was late. But the Korto segue was really good! Most things that I played from my laptop sounded terrible. The Membranes were an exception though that song sounds like eco-fascism."
2019. So it goes.

How hard is it to write a sentence? How hard to post a picture, or a sound file, or a playlist? Probably "not very," on a universal scale, but on my solipsistic spectrum of struggle they appear at one extreme, I guess. Anyway, hello, it's me! I have indeed been doing radio all this time, however it may seem to podcast-only listeners. What else have I been doing? Where do I start?
Let's just say I moved and changed jobs, and the rest is gossip.
Notably, this was Morrissey's birthday. In previous years I might have programmed accordingly, and this year I might have programmed accordingly but more antagonistically, but honestly I'm just finished. This was probably "catalyst one" of my format change / plunge off the deep end / whatever. But that's for another day.
In the meantime, this is a nearly perfect show (at least that's what my notes tell me) as far as technique is concerned, though there is a lot of rock in hour 2. In "what were we enduring on this day" news, it was indeed World Goth Day and wouldn't you know it, people in the 4AD facebook group were body-shaming Lisa Gerrard; elsewhere, known jackass Moby was discovered to have another level to him, accidentally reflected in the Stella Donnelly tune that I played. Topicality!

All About the Screaming: Transmission 466, 2019 May 18
Saturday Aug 17, 2019
Saturday Aug 17, 2019
There was no "occasion" for Lady Catharsis's appearance on this Saturday night fill-in occurrence of the Bombast thing. Much to my relief, there wasn't much "happening" in the world to serve as background noise or motivation. There were just (strangely) a hundred minutes for us to reiterate our musical (non) vision to the world. The preceding program, a pre-recorded one, ran over time and strangely advertised a show that was not about to happen. (Note to management, if they're still monitoring my posts: we're losing our definition of "evergreen" here; call it "evergreen creep" or whatever you like, but people need to do their own edits.)
Short though it was--and made to seem shorter by the inclusion of a very long Stereolab opener that I probably mispronounced--it was an eventful evening. We put the "crack research team" on the case of Sandie Shaw's early records. We discussed the place of Colourbox in the 4AD universe (and I feel like decreeing that we are finished with that--the time for discussion is past). We learned a lot about Lady C's wild early college years ("I got my ear pierced and everything"). And we played a number that we also played at our wedding, all those years ago! You'll have to guess, but it's not difficult.

Saying Nothing So You Don't Have To Lie: Transmission 465, 2019 May 15

Let's review the "notes" from this episode:
"Lagged a bit going into [the Brian Jonestown Massacre] but a great first hour!"
"Very rockist in hour 2"--true
"Alborosie detour was much needed but didn't make sense"--sadly, also true
"Messed up segue out of Bilge Pump"--I was anxious, what can I say?
"Hugs for Chelsea is so fucking compressed"--this is the truest thing I wrote down about this program, but you know what, the judge just said that Chelsea Manning is going to be in prison for more than an additional year and will have to pay like half a million dollars in fines, so you know what, just buy the damn benefit and cope with it.
My listening and posting cycle is getting a bit faster; I've gotten so fed up with the disappearance of my free time that I'm even more determined to carve out moments and comment about these broadcasts and the deteriorating state of everything. What I'm saying is that I haven't listened to this, like, a dozen times like I have done with some other "recent" episodes, so my raw notes will have to do. I know that at around this time I was bitching online about some kind of disaster capitalism as it related to art and human tragedy. You know, as one does. I am guessing I will have more to say about this as I approach a state of "being caught up" on this website, but that state is not now.

Dear listener / reader, I hope you will appreciate that I am working under duress right now. My Summer of Movement and Racism (or is that Movement Racism?) shows no signs of slowing down, and yet I am compelled to keep posting--or, as those less generous among you would say, "to post." How the sausage is made--it's actually "market forces" that are pushing me. I'm wasting the money I spend at this website by not filling up my allotted server space these last couple of months, and it's bothering me. So my botherment is your gain, as I present to you another program from what I like to call "before."
Late in the broadcast I refer to this as a "disorganized evening," which it really isn't. Surely I was kicking myself for hitting a wrong button in Djay Pro and making Causa Sui loop back to the beginning, something I don't even acknowledge when I am back-announcing. Nicholas Hill would be proud of me for that. Elsewhere, my notes say "segue from Deafkids to XXL sounds like a mistake but isn't." Damn right, and a good summary of the overall outing. Mission accomplished.

[GUEST POST]
Halcyon here, the "good captain," as I like to think of myself, bringing you another audio transcript of a gentle Saturday morning from long ago. For civic infrastructure trivia buffs, this should have bookended street repairs near the radio station that had just begun when I embarked on my previous departure, but this was not the case. More evidence that I shouldn't concern myself with what is on the ground. People keep trying to tell me. Who knows if I will ever listen.
I am hereby giving myself credit for reigniting Kid Catharsis's interest in Laraaji by playing today's lengthy opening piece. Why shouldn't I? Structurally, things get more hectic after that point, the changes coming faster and faster. Is that reminiscent of something? Does that do anything for you, listener? Is it perhaps none of my business?
As always, this was a "pop-up" program, and I don't know if or when I will be allowed to do this again. Life is contingency.

Let Me Take You Down the Corridors of My Life: Transmission 463, 2019 May 1

I must admit that I've been looking through my social media timelines for clues as to what was happening at the time these old programs were aired. It's been so long, and we seem to have passed through so many worlds, that I have reached a new order of magnitude of not-remembering, if that even makes sense. (Apologies, I am on my second vodka-and-Pompelmo as I write this.) Anyway, I must not have been doing much on social media at around this time. And it's just as well. Do you remember when Facebook and Twitter were fun? Or am I just hallucinating? At any rate it has been a crazy couple of months, I have been extremely offline, and I have little idea what is going on in the world.
This program is from a different era, and it begins a bit low-key. It gets going eventually, and I admit that I like where it goes. But it sounds foreign to me, for long stretches. How things have changed. This warrants an explanation, and I will try to provide it, by and by. But for now, try to live with the sounds.
