It feels terrific that posting a broadcast six days after it happened feels "late," and I need terrific feelings this week. I've been sick, healthy, sick again. I've forgotten my "homework" for therapy, as I realized only one day before my session. Early in the program's history, I put out a public call for an unpaid intern; that position is still available!
The night on which the broadcast happened was more or less the beginning of all of this. I began with a tired feeling and it went downhill from there. These things happen. Sarcasm got the better of me in places (apologies, Slaughtered Saint), sloppiness in others (I'll let you decide whether John Tejada segue-ing into Iggy Pop provides enjoyment). I do think that the Jenny Hval song makes it all worth it, though.

Having, admittedly, taken more radio shifts than have been my share, I am finding four years on that I have done radio on many days of the year. Almost any given day is the "anniversary" of some broadcast or other. This is very convenient for social-media "memories" and "throwbacks." HOWEVER, September 21 was terra nova--until last week, when I FINALLY had the opportunity to play that Earth, Wind & Fire song on the night it describes.
This was indeed a program of only blue talk and love. As usual my segues (which I do actually plan) surprised me with their strangeness at times, which I guess means that my conscious planning is the equivalent of blindfolding myself and reaching into a record bag. Is following "Charlotte Sometimes" with "September" insanity or genius? It's a fine line, as an old acquaintance of mine would say.

Guy LeBatard "checking in." At long last, and after many boring pleas and threats, I am posting the most "recent" radio diversion in my series. I should say "my" series because it technically belongs to no one, but up to and including this time of writing I am the only one willing to drive this bus. THE HIGHER, THE FEWER. The question is, drive the bus where? And through what?
The answer is a hedonistic safespace existing within the dimension of audio, where "beats and stuff" liberate your consciousness from the prison of thought. And "through" meritorious programs such as The Slow Drift (which I replaced on this night), which invite the experience of actual art. BORING.
After a nine-month hiatus (so far) it may seem as though I am eulogizing the program, but there will be more opportunities for us to escape together.

I don't know if I was anyone's maple pecan on this night, but I was in good spirits. Having resolved to speak more words, I powered through unexpected frogs in the throat and impromptu references to people such as "Dennis Provell." I insisted multiple times, without actually knowing, that Y Records was "out of Bristol"--this turned out to be true!--and that people "didn't like" The Birth of the Y (I have no idea about this other than what I've concluded from seeing this record, ready to be had for the price of a cheap cocktail, just about everywhere). How I wound up with this record in my collection, not thoroughly enjoying it myself for many years, until just now, I really couldn't tell you. But there it is. You're welcome.
This morning I sat with Catharsis Junior as she finished a homework assignment. She was mired in self-criticism and paralysis. I told her that she should just write fearlessly. It seems to have worked. So there is your free bit of wisdom for the day. Now, to learn how to follow my own advice.

Welcome to the much-dreaded, and therefore totally downplayed, occasion of our 300th episode. The Oedipal feelings have come and not exactly gone. I'm doing my best to cope with the inevitability of this program/era being the real thing. (But what a loaded "rehearsal" the previous program/era was.) If this seems like "vaguebooking" to you, you must either do some further reading on this website or let it go.
Anyway, because this night was additionally someone else's occasion, we brought back "Physical Evidence" rather abruptly, and with a typically wide-of-the-mark selection. Aside from that there is a lot of "free Bandcamp compilation from Brazil" stuff going on in this episode, and I don't feel the least bit ashamed. Would you?

[GUEST POST]
Bonjour! Guy posting again, with a program that more or less fell in the forest without making a sound. It was spontaneous, what with Sarah, the usual host at this time, having thrown out her back or something like that. I am not one to squander a chance to exploit anyone's misfortune. So anxious was I to hear some beats--and who among us has not been there--I forgot to advertise my appearance on the radio, nearly forgot to record it, and then forgot where I stored the recording. All of that is resolved here, for better or for worse.
I see that I managed to play The Orb for a second consecutive outing, and I rue the oversight. We are indeed turning what was once an adventure into a reliable site of consumption.

Bringing our insane summer to a close (by force of will, in defiance of nature and calendar), this program seemed besieged by problems I can now no longer identify. You'll just have to listen to find out what they were. I know that at one point in the evening one of the cd channels on the console was greatly favoring the right channel over the left. The solution was hitting a button over and over again. Retro consoles are cute that way. Anyway, it was a night like that.
Reading about John Peel these days (what's new?), Lady C having bought me a copy of Good Night and Good Riddance, which is a Very Large Book. Feeling inadequate as I am probably doomed to do, thinking about my hesitance to speak and my shallowness of affect when I do speak. Missing the days of adventure but knowing that I can't get off this carousel and hope to get back on.
What's happening with you?

[GUEST POST]
Guy, returning. Here is another program I did last October. Why take so long to post it, you ask? It is all dead time anyway, what is your hurry?
This broadcast came on the heels of another, four nights prior, if we must be exact. Lacking time to prepare, I engaged in a bit of nostalgia. It would embarrass me, if I had shame.
Additionally I was a bit distracted by all the hub-bub about the imminent Halloween observance, something I regard as a sanctioned, (therefore) woeful festival of escapism and gluttony of the worst kind (the indiscriminate kind). It seems to me the only thing to do is to play tricks instead of allowing oneself to be placated with "treats." No one ever seems to have anything interesting in mind. Had I a place to live, I would refuse to buy candy and tell each plastic-clad visitor, "I have nothing for you, so you will have to trick me." I suppose it's best for everyone that I don't settle down, preferring instead to drift.

You Say You Love the Shadow: Transmission 298, 2016 August 24
Tuesday Sep 06, 2016
Tuesday Sep 06, 2016
Welcome to the first Bombast of the local academic year. I have made this observation before, but it seems timely again now: the show has entered "senior year" territory on the college radio timescale. Which is not to rule out eventual super-senior or "old timer who just won't get out of the way" status; nevertheless it is illustrative. I find myself reminiscing about the "olden days," which are, like, 2013, and thinking of that early time as "innocent" (it so was not).
Facebook's "memory" engine reminded me that this interview happened once upon a time (and thanks to Eric for hosting me, and apologies to him and everyone else for my insistence on appearing in my "deejay persona" and not as the actual me). It got me thinking about the conceptual framework of this program and whether I've strayed from it (I don't think I have, but maybe I'm not the best judge). If I do say so myself--and I do--I think we've been remarkably consistent over the nearly 300 hullabaloos that we have hosted. Listen for yourself--here's Transmission 1 (shoddy sound quality, such was WRFI-ness back then).
It really is, as I say, a special thing to be on the radio. I was talking to my mental health professional last week about the ongoing crisis in my life that is free time; I told her that radio was the last leisure-time activity in my life that I would jettison. "I think it broke my heart," I said, "not to be on the radio. It took me 20 years to notice it, but I realized it when I got back on." This is true.
Thank you, listener(s), for helping me hold my heart together.

A Cheap Affair, A Sordid Truth: Transmission 297, 2016 August 19
Friday Sep 02, 2016
Friday Sep 02, 2016
I mentioned in a recent post that the August 8 program, which maybe should not have happened, was a bookend. Here is the other, and again, this program maybe should not have happened. I was filling in for Conference of the Birds, feeling compelled because it was the 19th. You know, a lot of things have happened in my life on the 19th of this or that month. Almost all of them have been bad things. (Thankfully, this show was not a bad thing. It is quite good.)
Maybe some of you don't remember the era of handwritten correspondence, when bad news really did travel slowly. You couldn't get a text or an email or a DM or a "poke" or whatever the latest techno-horror is. Life as you know it might be over, only you wouldn't know it. The truth was on its way. I remember one August when I was blissfully unaware for five days that my heart had been cuisinarted. Is that a liminal state? It was certainly "death from above," I can tell you that.
Good thing I'm over it now.
Technical note: this program was recorded on our new auto-recording software at the station because I was so busy talking to DJ Drew about smartphone plans (there's me, being a luddite again) that I forgot to turn my own recorder on. I think it sounds pretty decent! ALSO there is a hilarious segment in here somewhere in which I give myself a real-time geography lesson. Not to be missed.
