All About the Screaming: Transmission 466, 2019 May 18
Saturday Aug 17, 2019
Saturday Aug 17, 2019
There was no "occasion" for Lady Catharsis's appearance on this Saturday night fill-in occurrence of the Bombast thing. Much to my relief, there wasn't much "happening" in the world to serve as background noise or motivation. There were just (strangely) a hundred minutes for us to reiterate our musical (non) vision to the world. The preceding program, a pre-recorded one, ran over time and strangely advertised a show that was not about to happen. (Note to management, if they're still monitoring my posts: we're losing our definition of "evergreen" here; call it "evergreen creep" or whatever you like, but people need to do their own edits.)
Short though it was--and made to seem shorter by the inclusion of a very long Stereolab opener that I probably mispronounced--it was an eventful evening. We put the "crack research team" on the case of Sandie Shaw's early records. We discussed the place of Colourbox in the 4AD universe (and I feel like decreeing that we are finished with that--the time for discussion is past). We learned a lot about Lady C's wild early college years ("I got my ear pierced and everything"). And we played a number that we also played at our wedding, all those years ago! You'll have to guess, but it's not difficult.

Saying Nothing So You Don't Have To Lie: Transmission 465, 2019 May 15
Thursday Aug 08, 2019

Let's review the "notes" from this episode:
"Lagged a bit going into [the Brian Jonestown Massacre] but a great first hour!"
"Very rockist in hour 2"--true
"Alborosie detour was much needed but didn't make sense"--sadly, also true
"Messed up segue out of Bilge Pump"--I was anxious, what can I say?
"Hugs for Chelsea is so fucking compressed"--this is the truest thing I wrote down about this program, but you know what, the judge just said that Chelsea Manning is going to be in prison for more than an additional year and will have to pay like half a million dollars in fines, so you know what, just buy the damn benefit and cope with it.
My listening and posting cycle is getting a bit faster; I've gotten so fed up with the disappearance of my free time that I'm even more determined to carve out moments and comment about these broadcasts and the deteriorating state of everything. What I'm saying is that I haven't listened to this, like, a dozen times like I have done with some other "recent" episodes, so my raw notes will have to do. I know that at around this time I was bitching online about some kind of disaster capitalism as it related to art and human tragedy. You know, as one does. I am guessing I will have more to say about this as I approach a state of "being caught up" on this website, but that state is not now.

Dear listener / reader, I hope you will appreciate that I am working under duress right now. My Summer of Movement and Racism (or is that Movement Racism?) shows no signs of slowing down, and yet I am compelled to keep posting--or, as those less generous among you would say, "to post." How the sausage is made--it's actually "market forces" that are pushing me. I'm wasting the money I spend at this website by not filling up my allotted server space these last couple of months, and it's bothering me. So my botherment is your gain, as I present to you another program from what I like to call "before."
Late in the broadcast I refer to this as a "disorganized evening," which it really isn't. Surely I was kicking myself for hitting a wrong button in Djay Pro and making Causa Sui loop back to the beginning, something I don't even acknowledge when I am back-announcing. Nicholas Hill would be proud of me for that. Elsewhere, my notes say "segue from Deafkids to XXL sounds like a mistake but isn't." Damn right, and a good summary of the overall outing. Mission accomplished.

[GUEST POST]
Halcyon here, the "good captain," as I like to think of myself, bringing you another audio transcript of a gentle Saturday morning from long ago. For civic infrastructure trivia buffs, this should have bookended street repairs near the radio station that had just begun when I embarked on my previous departure, but this was not the case. More evidence that I shouldn't concern myself with what is on the ground. People keep trying to tell me. Who knows if I will ever listen.
I am hereby giving myself credit for reigniting Kid Catharsis's interest in Laraaji by playing today's lengthy opening piece. Why shouldn't I? Structurally, things get more hectic after that point, the changes coming faster and faster. Is that reminiscent of something? Does that do anything for you, listener? Is it perhaps none of my business?
As always, this was a "pop-up" program, and I don't know if or when I will be allowed to do this again. Life is contingency.

Let Me Take You Down the Corridors of My Life: Transmission 463, 2019 May 1

I must admit that I've been looking through my social media timelines for clues as to what was happening at the time these old programs were aired. It's been so long, and we seem to have passed through so many worlds, that I have reached a new order of magnitude of not-remembering, if that even makes sense. (Apologies, I am on my second vodka-and-Pompelmo as I write this.) Anyway, I must not have been doing much on social media at around this time. And it's just as well. Do you remember when Facebook and Twitter were fun? Or am I just hallucinating? At any rate it has been a crazy couple of months, I have been extremely offline, and I have little idea what is going on in the world.
This program is from a different era, and it begins a bit low-key. It gets going eventually, and I admit that I like where it goes. But it sounds foreign to me, for long stretches. How things have changed. This warrants an explanation, and I will try to provide it, by and by. But for now, try to live with the sounds.

Serendipitously, I guess, I am trying to recall this program at the right time. I see that on this day "what we were enduring" was a tedious and stupid political argument about whether the incarcerated should have the right to vote. (They should.) And now, in the sweltering heat of a July that is surely cooler than any we will see in the future, I am compelled to think about "carceral logic," how it affects me, whether I embrace it, etc. It's been a wild ride at "theory camp" this year.
I would say I deserve "congratulations" somewhere on the spectrum of irony for managing to get three months behind in my postings, which is a record. What can I say? Life intrudes. We're trying to buy a house, and I am trying to be good at the things in my life that don't involve radio, for once. And I am also trying to sleep. As always, if you're unhappy with the service around here, we offer full refunds.

I swear to god I will never be "good" at social media. Maybe it is because I am too old and maybe it is because I have lost the ability to master things, but I "lose" people and transactions for the dumbest and most unfathomable of reasons. This time it was over a discussion about Spotify and its connection to our station's "DJ" software which we are using, perhaps illicitly, as airplay software. It has always struck me as odd that nonprofit radio stations should pay any kind of royalties for doing artists the favor of publicizing their music, but that is a concession I have made in my dotage and tiredness. But to think that playing shoddy mp3 files on an "unauthorized" platform is a violation of some terms and conditions, and that Spotify stans on Twitter would "enforce" these for free, is completely beyond me. Consider me corncobbed. Add to this the fact that Lady C and I had an offer for a house rejected in favor of someone who threw down a quarter million dollars in cash, and that there was yet another station meeting prior to this program in which I felt thoroughly disrespected, and it was a "blastedly awful" day.
Anyway, this surprise edition of the program earned me a couple of nice interactions with local proprietor "Drummer John" who appreciated Cosey Fanni Tutti and Blind Idiot God. He told me I was helping him transcend. Transcend what I don't know. But if that isn't the point of all this I don't have a clue what is.

Of Course You'll Scoff: Transmission 460, 2019 April 17

My notes from this show are brief and (surprise!) quite self-critical. "Djay Pro fucks up The Twilight Sad," I wrote; "I fucked up the segue too....The Wedding Present, as well! It seems to hate them....I messed up 'Minxed Driks.'" So it was a typical night out, it seems. Maybe a little bit rockist, listening back (again and again and again as I have put off writing this "entry"); Meat Beat Manifesto and Stratis don't really seem to fit but without them this show would not really be me. And it must be me because I am it.
On this day--maybe not that much was happening in the world. I think maybe this was the day someone did Pete Buttigieg cosplay, with the presidential candidate whipping a fake Christ on a cross. I have always found Easter LARPing to be the strangest and worst. Locally, the Squirrel Nut Zippers were in town and an alarming number of people my age were excited about this. Re-evaluating our tastes in the 90s seems to be something we were doing in the Spring of 2019. But--not sorry--I was right about the swing revival then and I am right about it now? How's that? I am sure the people who actually attended the gig on this night firmly believe the same thing about themselves. This must be the polarization that everyone is talking about.

A long time has passed since I posted something, and I sincerely apologize. It's crazy season for me, work-wise: so crazy that I have a "student assistant" now. And apparently I am pathological enough to have burned through the first one, so good luck to that person's replacement. I have mentioned it before, but BOMBAST could really use an intern or something as well. But since I have the kind of program where I can't even give away free movie tickets, apparently, I am guessing there isn't much interest. So it goes.
How the sausage is made: I have a running "note" on my phone where I jot down real-time observations of my programs. "I hate this show so fucking much," I wrote on the night this aired. I must have had some sort of plan, but nothing was going right. My computer and the station's computers both decided to work against me. I did not help by throwing together some truly awful segues. I swear, the songs are good! And I promise to do better, or at least not any worse.

M Is For The Mean Things That This Mean Man Does: Transmission 458, 2019 April 3
Thursday May 30, 2019
Thursday May 30, 2019
I don't know how I developed the theory, or superstition, that when I only do one program per week I am more careful, less mistake-prone. That idea is certainly undermined by this program that you find here. As "always" I had the best of intentions but not necessarily the best ideas, in the moment. Somehow I desired to play a Lemonheads song, and to play it after Karate Hiroshima (whose segue I think I biffed, if memory serves). Similarly I deemed it wise to play Wire after Pavo Pavo, and to play "Deceased Squirrel on the Phone" (featuring Bob Vratnicek--YES, LISTENERS, THAT BOB VRATNICEK!) after Dexter Story. At some point in WRFI's history we promised to strive for "excellence in content and technique," but who could predict that the arc of striving bent so gradually toward its goal?
At least I'm pretty sure I got Simon Raymonde's birthday correct, and as I have become fond of saying, "I'm sure he's listening."
Not much to add in the category of "what we were enduring this week," or "what were we healing from," or whatever it was I was calling that recurring diary feature. I think maybe a major centrist candidate entered the presidential race this week, so it looks like we'll all get to revisit the ill-conceived compromises of years past. I already do this constantly, in my head, so welcome to my world, everybody.
