[GUEST POST]
Halcyon here. The last time out, I was in quite a mood. This show brings nothing but [hic] happy memories.
We are currently experiencing fall-like weather, perfect for flying, but alas I do not have the time. I thought I would post this to remind you that I still exist. I do.
Kid Catharsis, who graciously allows me to post here, informs me that Heidi Berry is a "legend" of some sort. I don't doubt it! Nice tune.
I see from the playlist that I was more or less living in the past on this outing. That's fine; I don't have the same problems with that as others do.

Like a fine ratatouille, this program made for better listening the next day. Except for Lady Catharsis' unfortunate absence, which made Billy Squier's inclusion in the program really weird, this is a mixtape with few flaws--host and selection notwithstanding. (I find I am doing well with this "demanding better from myself" business.)
On that subject--did I really say "we're mostly current tonight," or something like that, and then proceed to play the following sequence--Joy Division / Oyster Band / Billy Squier / Ian Dury / Section 25 / Headcoats? Yes, yes I did. Would you be willing to consider reissues as a mitigating factor? Do you believe, as I think I do, that if something never becomes "spectacle" it is as if it never happened, and is therefore new? That's what I managed to glean from Greil Marcus, anyway, although my scholarship is, as always, "cause for concern." [Guy, if you're paying attention, I could use your help.]
I did suffer a temporary bout of wishing-away-the-present in music. I hated the 90s, most everything about it: alternative as a genre; lumberjack singing; rave; the end of Factory and Rough Trade; the drawn-out death spiral of 4AD; the pretense of lo-fi; cuddlecore. If it weren't for turntablism, jungle, and Stereolab, I might have gone full-bore jazz/classical. Only recently have I begun to piece together the good bits from that time, thinking that it couldn't have been as bad as it felt back then. (It was close).

Often enough, people want to occupy the airwaves without occupying the station. Not being able to do the show on a given week, a host will wonder if a previous episode will suffice. Usually the answer is "no." Here's a rationale, lest anyone think I'm just "squashing everyone's good ideas" in accordance with my role as one of the "three white guys" who "run the station": because we need live humans at the station as often as possible, and why not commandeer the booth if the airtime isn't claimed; because previously aired episodes don't reward those "repeat listeners" we all like to think we have; because new djs need to get learned; because letting djs appear at different times of day, to different crowds, helps publicize existing programs. One glance at my facebook page will let you take in the evidence that I am on the path to world domination, by following this latter plan.
At any rate Joe of Joe Show fame was out on this Thursday evening--how nice it must be to have people wanting to celebrate your birthday!--so I couldn't pass up a prime-time opportunity. Did I do anything remotely resembling Joe's show? Apparently not--no themes, no dance parties, no musing (no one cares what I think, at least that is a deeply held belief). A cassette, for god's sake, as the "Physical Evidence"--thank goodness fusion music is better than fusion cuisine. And lest anyone confuse our programs, a 24-minute Croix de Bombast at the end of it all. "You are really separating the wheat from the chaff," General Manager Felix tells me as he settles in to do his program. All the time, son, all the damn time.

[GUEST POST]
Guy LeBatard here, turning in a circle in the night to be consumed by the internet. It's May, which can only mean that I am fattening myself on a diet of whiskey and Cheez-its and stupefying myself watching the ice hockey playoffs. My team is no more, so my only interest is in making sure Les Habitants lose (though I do love Ginette Reno).
Here is a program from a leaner autumnal time. Did I see that Kid Catharsis had some thoughts on memory? As usual he's an egg short of a croque madame. Dead time: who needs it? The past is a terrible thing to hoard. This particular detour was outstanding, if you are the sort who needs others to entertain you, and I don't need to recall a thing about it to assert that.

Smokin' 'Em While I Got 'Em: Transmission 202, 2015 May 5
Monday May 11, 2015
Monday May 11, 2015
The first Bombastic hours of May were near-perfect, and here is the evidence. Execution trumped segues on this night, although there were a couple of nice moments. I'm finding Medway nights difficult in this regard; I am sure that somewhere in these archives I have wondered "aloud" whether that was a sign of greatness. I begin to doubt that it is, but Childish & co. do not need me to certify them.
As a seeming influx of djs, coupled with my increasing reluctance to do late nights, diminishes the frequency of my transmissions I have time to reflect on things. This week I turn to my own schtick. Last time out I said that I impress myself; despite that being a change of pace and a much-needed affirmation, I will point out some areas where I make myself tired. (a) Not Remembering, e.g. the innumerable "something must have gone wrong, but I don't recall what it was" / "this program was so long ago the details are lost on me" excuses. It's not cute. No one cares. (b) Honoring Mistakes As a Sign of Liveness: ugh, you're not John Peel, son, tighten up your game. (c) Threatening to Quit Over Some Radio Drama. "Don't you ever quit," a wise person told me very early in this adventure, and she was right. If I quit, the cocks win. They might do so anyway, but they'll have to kill me.
Here's hoping we see no more of that.

Give Up, Give Up: Transmission 201, 2015 April 28

Friday May 08, 2015
We begin our third century with an "only slightly imperfect" episode. I've been on a good run lately. The real downer on this night was that our planned "Physical Evidence" release finally managed to surface on iTunes, about 15 years after the fact. I believe that's twice Tim Cook has defeated me now; he's making a game of it. Still, Lady Catharsis contributes the track "Christianity Is Stupid," sure to irritate friends and family alike.
Confession: my favorite place to listen to these mixtapes after the fact is the treadmill. They are surprisingly good for the purpose. If I cannot impress anyone else with this program, I will at least impress myself. This is my affirmation for the day. I need these things--I've been considering taking a break lately, having just seen two other programs do just that and seeing their hosts seemingly dropping substantial spiritual weight.
There are two more programs recorded and in the pipeline. That's as much as I can promise. I could always get run over by a bus, you know.

Halcyon reporting. Days are warmer and longer, and skies are clearer; it was for these climes that we created this program. This particular episode, however, aired when looming equinox forced me into afternoon duty.
Initially I tried posting this on soundclod, but apparently Siinaii's people thought a bit-starved .mp3 of their tune threatened copyright. When people are 90 years old, wondering why it didn't work out for them and their music, why people ultimately never heard of them or didn't care, I hope they have some nice fables to tell themselves. I mean that. Stories are great fun.
Thank goodness this program is a "mere" pop-up; I'd hate to feel like anything about it "had" to happen.

LeBatard ici, and I will leave you to guess where "here" is. I took a much-needed vacation from the relentless schedule of doing shows, posting shows, etc., but I have returned to dead, cyclical time, for now. For some reason the people at WRFI made me a regular fixture last summer, and here is one of those shows. IIRC this was just after Kid Catharsis's birthday, which was a disaster. It's a shame we can't fuel our motorbikes with the terrible behavior of other people, for it is a limitless resource.
Anyway--this is a truly arbitrary collection of tunes. Grab-bags and adventure are how I roll. If you want planning and care, you'll have to go somewhere else.

Cheap Trucker Speed: Transmission 200, 2015 April 21
Monday May 04, 2015
Monday May 04, 2015
Here is a milestone episode, if you are into that sort of thing. Unlike #100, IIRC, this one happened in the "alpha" [i.e. regular] timeslot. The US Postal Service made things really "dramatic" by waiting until the last possible moment to deliver this night's "Physical Evidence," but sure enough they "came through" and we got to hear a selection from Sub Pop 200, an understated & underrated compilation whose best tracks don't seem to come from the usual suspects.
Those who "know me well" may actually recall that I owned this back in the day and may wonder why I had to procure it by mail order. Do you ever make mistakes with your music collection, e.g. think that you are "finished" with something, and sell it, and then later miss it, and decide that you need it again? If you appreciate this program I know that you do this. That's why, and enough said.
Anyway the fortuitous timing spared me from having to roll with Plan B, which was some Physical Evidence by the Cure, this being Robert Smith's birthday. And I probably would have been forced to include this tune, which I kind of didn't think I should do, and Lady C told me there was no way I could do. And I think I was prepared not to. Is this cowardice? It's purely academic, because I'm fine with cowardice as cowards have a way of surviving. But whose fault is it if people don't read Camus? Are there any other songs like this? Meaning: songs whose meaning used to be understood clearly and universally, but are now deliberately misunderstood, by people who know better, as part of the social contract? If I get a long enough list of these I'll make a whole show out of them. I need some kind of bang with which to go out, besides this one tune, which I know will be part of my final program (whenever that is).

Here is a show that will make you wonder if it's past time I stopped playing vinyl records. I think I curate the show pretty well--Last of the Garage Punk Unknowns Volume 2 (which helps give the lie to Volume 1's title) is a great collection, but whether I can remember to fade down the turntable channel before the next track begins to play is basically a coin flip. That's not even a passing grade. Also, I was off by a week on Michael Franti's birthday, which will teach me not to look ahead.
Pre- and post-milestone episode I've been thinking about the big picture. (1) Are things different now than in the beginning? Yes--listening to some programs from 2 years ago or so, as I did recently, I got all wistful. Those shows were very nocturnal, and I don't know how well I'm achieving that right now. I found myself missing some bands that seem to have gone inactive, wondering whether they've been replaced by bands as good. I'm not sure about the host of those earlier programs, though. I think "bed music" turned out to be a good idea after all, and less pedantry is always welcome. Isn't it? (2) If the answer to (1) is "yes," and it is, when did things change? It would have to be around the time I became "management," which was never the goal. A graceful retreat, however it might be achieved, has been on my mind a lot lately. This is a human experiment with wild unpredictable swings between success and failure. I have taken to cc-ing someone on all my radio emails just to keep my worst tendencies in check. (3) How about that search for the "unbroken younger self"--how is that going? I begin to think that it was always misguided. I was never unbroken. Maybe it is "always now," as Section 25 would say. Lots of work still to do, I guess.
You know who else I have been listening to, though, and who raises no doubts whatsoever? Cap'n Halcyon. That guy is really good.
