Guy here. I did a couple of programs at the end of October. This is one. A captive of dead time might have said, "my schedule allowed me" to do a couple of programs; a poseur might have called it a "gentlemanly, cosmopolitan schedule." But I "keep it real." I do what I want, when I want. My schedule dictates not a thing.

It was nevertheless convenient that I was thrown off a middle-school bus chartered for a middle-school field trip to Quebec, on which I had tried to stow away. But these things will happen. You don't sulk. You make the best of it. I have already "been a lot of places, seen a lot of faces" anyway. It's those kids who are missing out.

Guy here. I'm feeling angry these days and would like to get to a post-angry state. But I am stuck taking my anger for reality because I believe in the reality of my anger.

It was probably this way when this program aired, but I was not articulating it to myself or anyone else. There is a relentlessness in what I do that can be taken as hedonism or sadism. Weighing in is not a thing I will do; it is part of your freedom, in case you didn't already know, to make your own decision.

I do think that I rendered all the artist names correctly this time out, so we can strike that from the list of things to be upset about.

Guy here. A space had opened on this Valentine's Day, what with everyone seemingly busy--representing affection through acts of compulsory consumption, subjecting themselves to forced entertainment, and so on. You know--the usual.

On this outing I don't know what I was trying to do--perhaps combining the familiar with the novel. It's useful enough, if we allow for different values of "useful." I have done better, and I have done worse.
 
Finally, on this program I was headed for a desirable state of non-symmetry, when DJ Danelectro got trapped on the highway. In an act of laziness and cowardice I embraced my entrapment and played an extra tune. Can we only go where the traffic goes?

Guy here. I go wherever instinct leads me. On this broadcast it led me back to familiar territory, but whenever I drift, I drift differently. Circular beats, not circular time.

Speaking of which--it was sometime around the airing of this program that it was established, once and for all, that this program had pop-up status, as opposed to being a regular fixture. Predictability is alright for some. But surprise is a key element of my assault on boredom, and anything that repeats on a calendar feels like work. I never work.

If you want a picture of the future, imagine my being on the air--or not on the air--you never know--forever.

Guy here. I "mixed it up" on this program, playing some things from the "catalogue" and veering off my usual course. In theory I can do whatever I want, whenever I want. In reality it requires permission, because I have standards.

I wonder whatever became of jungling and junglism. Apparently people still do these things, though I shudder to think it--already there are retrospectives. I can't deal with people living in the past. (That is what cassettes are for, why they are so dangerous, and why they come in convenient containers.) Anyway, it seemed for a while like an interesting escape. albeit an introverted one. Is it possible that when an escape route is deemed useless and dormant that it becomes interesting? Maybe this program answers that, but it's for someone else to decide.

What this program does answer is whether I can distinguish Boards of Canada from Mogwai. The answer is no. I cannot tell one Scottish entity from another. They all look the same to me. Except Kid Catharsis's wife--she is hot.

Bonjour, LeBatard here, “here” being an undisclosed location in the not-frozen North. I didn’t buy you anything for Christmas, but I do have this program from the somewhat distant past to share with you. It cost me more than you know.

Since I am a free spirit, I often occupy the booth alone, but on this night I am joined for the first and only time. My co-host’s name is Faustine de la Rue, and she is, twice over. She and I plow through a multifaceted soundtrack for hedonism and adventure. We also butcher the entertainment calendar, and I injure myself in the studio. IT IS A DANGEROUS LIFE.

Guy LeBatard reporting from dead time. Here is a program that appeared with dreadful regularity, right on schedule--two weeks after the previous one, "just like we'd planned it." I must have had no other adventures to live.

Here, the title of the program was "true" regarding both content and concept. I strung together a bunch of things I had laying around, that I had meant to play at some time or other. An "island of misfit toys," as I like to think of it, which is a much better name for it than kid catharsis's dreary "overflow program." I can do better for my listeners than a malfunctioning toilet, for goodness' sake.

Guy LeBatard here, displaced in time and space from the program contained herein. Where these "podcasts" are, my truth is not. Reified me [or is it refried?] sounds fairly decent, though, I can assure you. October is safely in the past, unless there is, a la O'Brien in the Ministry of Love, some alternate universe where the past is still happening.

I do recall vaguely that there was another WRFI program around this time that was venturing into the sort of tunes that I play, and perhaps there has been another one since, but they are no more. And, seemingly, nor is this pop-up show. Certain genres don't seem to get the time and energy to be sustainable. Or maybe the people are the wrong people, though I would hate to think of the folk jockeys as the "right" people. Not even Orwell can make me shudder that effectively.

Guy LeBatard here, turning in a circle in the night to be consumed by the internet. It's May, which can only mean that I am fattening myself on a diet of whiskey and Cheez-its and stupefying myself watching the ice hockey playoffs. My team is no more, so my only interest is in making sure Les Habitants lose (though I do love Ginette Reno).

Here is a program from a leaner autumnal time. Did I see that Kid Catharsis had some thoughts on memory? As usual he's an egg short of a croque madame. Dead time: who needs it? The past is a terrible thing to hoard. This particular detour was outstanding, if you are the sort who needs others to entertain you, and I don't need to recall a thing about it to assert that.

I took a much-needed vacation from the relentless schedule of doing shows, posting shows, etc., but I have returned to dead, cyclical time, for now. For some reason the people at WRFI made me a regular fixture last summer, and here is one of those shows. IIRC this was just after Kid Catharsis's birthday, which was a disaster. It's a shame we can't fuel our motorbikes with the terrible behavior of other people, for it is a limitless resource.

Anyway--this is a truly arbitrary collection of tunes. Grab-bags and adventure are how I roll. If you want planning and care, you'll have to go somewhere else.
